AGREED! I dont watch book videos so i've never seen her channel until i found the video of her talking about the house she bought without seeing! Now im invested!!
Good call! We ripped our first house carpet out first day. Second house, my husband wanted to wait and I ended up with a chronic lung infection up coughing all night. I removed the carpet and the cough was better in two days!
Seriously dont know anyone would have not ripped it out by now. Its just getting started. Take down paneling, out with carpets...its not talking and doing.
I’ve lived in an old house all my life(mine was built in 1900) and here are a couple tips I’ve learned. 1. Always have house shoes because you never know when you’re going to get a splinter(I hate splinters) 2. Be prepared to fix things(as I’m sure you already are 😊). My dad had to learn how to snake our toilet growing up. 3. There will be creaking 4. Always have flashlights/batteries in case of a power outage. 5. Creatures may find their way into your house or attic.
OMG, you were talking about repainting the chairs and I was thinking "mmh pastel blue would be a very ariel-colour", and then you said you were thinking about light blue 😂😂😂😂😂
You will learn to love Crocs lol. They are just so useful if you live in a house. I have a pair that I use even now for runing outside and taking out trash or stuff like that. Basicaly the same thing as the boots but for less wet days.
People are so ridiculously precious about wood. It’s your house! It’s your wood! Rip it down! Paint it! I am fully on Team Paint The Wood if it’s not your thing. Light blue will look vintage-y and gorgeous.
I can't imagine being stuck in quarrentine in such an empty home. Sounds like a long, indoor camping experience. I bet you gained a new appreciation for appliances that we generally take for granted.
When you tear down the paneling you’ll be able to see any problems hidden in the walls, which is a good thing. Surely there will be some problems but hopefully not many. It’s always better to know. Best wishes.
I love when you started showing things that you bought and I understand the boots since you are close to a river, then you pulled out the "UGLY" Crocs! I have been wearing Crocs for over 39 years now, both lined and unlined. I have both real Crocs and FAKE Crocs. They are wonderful for inside and outside. When they get dirty you just throw them in the washer and they come out like new!! Next the 2 chairs that you bought are Plank Bottom chairs which fit perfect in your house. Next are the Half Tables which my Grandmother had in her house and I have them now. Plus when my husbands' parents died and we moved in this house, there were 5 of those tables here. They are perfect to have at the end of chairs or sofas (that's why there are short) and perfect to sit against a wall. Your microwave is to die for. It's just too cute! I am loving your videos!!!
I spent hours the other day looking at houses on the internet because of your last video. I’m only 22 and I haven’t even graduated college so I’m so far away from even buying my own house! 🤣
You might want to build a mudroom in the unfinished extention. If you plan on getting a dog then remember to tile (non slip) the mud room and add a shower to wash the dog!
Gurl I am hooked, I need more, I need see this ratchet decore become cottage core heaven, glad to see you so happy and content too it’s very wholesome.
Ripping out carpet is actually really easy. All you need is a box cutter, a pry-bar, and brute strength. It'll probably take no more than a half hour to rip it out of a normal sized room. Just cut it into manageable pieces and pull. That being said, then you have to deal with whatever subflooring is underneath. Best case scenario, you have real hardwood floors underneath that just needs TLC. Worst case, it's plywood (or concrete like in my house). Laying laminate flooring (clicks together) is easy enough, just make sure you use the self-leveling "stuff" (for lack of a better term) underneath.
What are your flood risks? Do you need to look at grading soil away from house, retention walls etc. water is the enemy of a house. Never put off water which sneaks into your house. Gutters are also really important. Momma bear here. So happy to be in this with you!
Omg, could we get a outside garden tour if you develop one on your land? That be so cool, like vegetables and a small section for like “fae folk”, aw that be so cute!!
I’m very new too this channel and already in love, and as a Michigander who now lives in North Carolina, hearing “aboot” is so comforting hahah makes miss home and Canadian neighbors ☺️
We just bought a house too and the downstairs has wood paneling. I loathe it! My husband LOVES it! Your house is over 150yr old. The veneer paneling was a 70’s thing. In the spirit of restoration you’ve expressed before, I support you ditching the panel wall coverings. Not that you need any of our approval, lol.
I'm unclear on the home inspection (if there is any at all) process upon buying/selling up in Canada but if you haven't had a licensed electrician look over the wiring throughout the house I heartily suggest it. Just because the electric might be working does not mean it's 100% safe. You don't want to do all that work and get it all pretty again only for it to burn down....and it also obviously has fire damage already in that attic space. Overall the bones look pretty good but don't overlook that electrical just bc a light turns on. Especially since it was previously abandoned. Mice and other creatures love to chew wires.
Oh ya, this video reminded me of when I moved to Halifax from Alberta in January. No snow, and I thought - awesome!! But then the blizzards started and, holy cow!! So much heavy, wet snow. I really hope for a gentler winter for you in your first winter in the maritimes!!
I have a YT suggestion for you, a channel called Farmhouse Vernacular. They are redoing an old house... room by room, which I think would be a good option for you. Also good discussions about colours and furniture,, right up your alley !
I have to admit I haven’t watched your channel or any other booktubers much lately. But I never unsubscribed bc I enjoyed checking in every once in a while to see what you’ve been up to. I am thrilled that you’re starting this series bc I love anything related to home owning and renovations. You are living my dream and I am so excited to go on this journey with you! Congrats, Ariel😁
I'm in BC and you've reignited my dream to move east and finally own again after having to pay horrendous ( over 50% of my wage) rent prices. Will follow your adventure! Edit: your little table is called a half moon table :)
I've been following Ariel for so long and the coolest thing to happen so far was realizing we have the same favorite poetry collection. I didn't even hear it from her! Crazy
That columbia jacket is literally everything. Like, SO Ariel. Paint the chairs bright and mismatched! That'd be so fun. Like, one light blue and one grass green.
So fun to watch your house bloom! You're approaching it the right way, priorities but with some special things mixed in that make the journey more enjoyable! Renovation is about having a plan, looking for deals, and flexing your budget by saving on things that don't matter as much so you can splurge a bit on things that do!
Take the fake wood paneling down as soon as you afford it. It is SOOOO flammable! Not to mention the toxic off gassing when it does burn! First you do electrical then plumbing! Good luck - and buy insulation by the truck load! You won’t have any of R value.
Welcome to the East Coast, you'll love it here! My husband and I just moved here 1.5 yrs ago from Ontario and we love it! We also bought a fixer-upper on 5.5 acres and we're enjoying putting our stamp on things. The price of houses is what sent us out this way. You''ll find the people are so friendly and super helpful when you need a hand. Have fun getting to know your place and settling in.
Take the wood paneling down! its the worst, I hate gross wood paneling. Also as someone who lives in an old house and had gross carpets, big tip! Just remove a tiny section in each room first to see what the floors are underneath, if its hardwood tear it all up and just have hardwood and worry about refinishing the floors later, if you remove it and see its just gross particle board then its a bigger job and you'll probably have to hire out. Im so excited to see you restore this house though! it'll be amazing.
Also I live in New Jersey and the housing market here is INSANE. I'd love to own a home someday but nothing is cheaper then 300k so I definitely feel your pain over this housing purchase!
If you don't already follow Paige at Farmhouse Vernacular - I think you would love her. She is restoring / fixing a Victorian style farmhouse - and doing what she calls a sympathetic renovation. ❤️
I get what you're saying but Ariel likes colourful and cute stuff, as seen by her microwave/ toaster and jacket so she probably doesn't think it's as amazing as you or I would. Plus it might not match with her aesthetic if the rest of her house is going to be colourful
I am so so so glad you bought this house! Not only does it selfishly align with my home renovation mood right now, I'm also just so glad you and your family now have a permanent and safe place to call home! Please keep the videos coming and please keep those sponsorships coming too (love that you have this ability to make your sudden move more affordable!) I'm looking into buying a house with my siblings in the next year. We have been life long renters and are trying to take the plunge of learning about real estate and the actual home owner process. Thanks for giving me motivation!
Crocs are great for the garden...unfluffed. Ps just don't forget to take them off before going to the store! I wore them to work one day after watering the garden. My boss would call me to his office to point n laugh!
When my husband and I bought our place the first thing we bought was a big Christmas tree. I came home one day from work with it. I stopped by a store by my work and surprised my hubby with it. I had always wanted one. And now I have one and 8 years later we are still using it.
First congratulations on your new old house! I hitch hiked all over the US and Canada in my 20s and Nova Scotia was probably my favorite place to hitch. The people were SOOO nice and so fun! I was constantly getting adopted by people and having a blast. That province is full of characters! Lastly, I just wanted to give you a warning that you need to be careful about living in old houses that have water damage i.e. mold! I am currently writing this from my wheelchair and I am 33 years old, formerly perfectly healthy, until I moved into an adorable old cottage that had hidden mold in the walls and crawl space (a common issue). 3 years later and I am severely ill and have to use a wheelchair. My IQ has dropped 10 percentage points from mold! I have had to spend 10s of thousands of dollars with mold toxicity doctors trying to heal. Girl its been a trip! I use to think mold was no big deal but turns out for 25% of the population, there is a genetic variant that doesn't allow us to detox mold out of our bodies ourselves, so it just accumulates and causes SERIOUS health issues. Mold illness is the new Lyme Disease that everyone will know about in 5 to 10 years. Its a hidden epidemic and its nothing to mess with. I have become something of a mold expert though this whole experience so feel free to message me here if you are interested and I will email you some tips to try and keep yourself and your home safe during your renovation process. Not trying to be scary but just have to try and protect anyone from this nightmare I am living.
I'm a new subscriber and so glad to have found your channel. I am addicted to home improvement shows so I will enjoy that part but books are also one of my favorite things in life so I'm gonna love that about you. I know it's not a priority now but those little half tables look really nice tucked against a wall someplace with a plant draped on them.
When I moved across the country before my boyfriend and all our furniture, I spent three weeks living without a chair (or any other furniture). OMG CHAIRS ARE INCREDIBLE I LOVE CHAIRS. TRUE HOUSEHOLD MVP
Please be very careful about the ticks here in NS! I’ve lived here all my life got sick with a mysterious illness doctors couldn’t figure out only to discover years later and much too late that I had late stage Lyme Disease. I haven’t been able to heal and remain sick, the government & top doctors here couldn’t give a rats ass about it and even mocked severely ill Lyme patients. Practice tick prevention everyday, especially during warm melting periods in the winter & spring. Good luck with your new home and property, I hope you enjoy the rural Nova Scotian lifestyle 💖💖
I know this video is old but I have one of those little half side tables and I use mine under a window as a plant stand, if your windows are low enough it's so cute!
😂😂😂 When you talked about the river and it being muddy, I understood 'money'. 'It's also money'... I thought you were going to look for gold in your river before the correct sentence entered my head. Well, a muddy river is nice too!
Ohhh from experience taking down anything in an old house means you can find horrors behind. Most likely there is plaster lath walls behind that wood panel. That stuff is horrible to rip out and can have asbestos in it. We took out plaster lath walls and it's like trying to rip down a rock wall or at least that's what it was like for us and the dust! The dust was everywhere and hard to get rid of. I'm looking forward to seeing what's behind those horrible wood panels and hoping that if it is plaster lath it's easy to get rid of .
Have we been given a house story? Like a basic history of why the house hasn’t been lived in in a while? Or like the rest of the history, but vague enough to keep from taking her privacy away?
Just commented on the first video..and clicked next to watch this one. Holy..are you me? I just bought almost the same microwave because..it’s aqua! I bought a toaster too, and next will be the kettle. They are just so cute! And like you..marketplace is fantastic!
That is exactly how I felt about my LL Bean fleece & my duck boots, omg 😂 I went to the outlet when we visited Maine this fall and I got a men’s fleece because it was in the most perfect shades of mossy green... I have lived in it all winter! It has a half zip, it has a kangaroo pouch on the front for my phone and my keys... and my duckie boots are great for the rainy wet winter we are having and the spring which will undoubtedly follow 😆 Congratulations on your new microwave, and rain boots, and all the new little things that bring you joy!!
Hearing people complain about houses not coming with a fridge or washer is so weird to me. Where I'm from (Australia) you never buy a house with anything more than an oven. Even with renting it's super rare for it to come with a fridge. It must me a USA/Canada thing?
I loved this haul of necessity rather than "I like this, I love that, so cute!" You're like "I NEED this. We need this. This is how I will use it. Also, SO CUTE!"
