The First Zenith DEFY | Octagonal case design before the ROYAL OAK + the GAY FRERES bracelet

This First Generation ZENITH DEFY from 1970 is a vintage gem! It featured an octagonal case design before the grandmasters like the Royal Oak from Gerald Genta for Audemars Piguet. The DEFY line was important to ZENITH and therefore I took the TiME to feature as many of its history and model variations as I could fit in this video. Additionally I will add a few facts about another vintage staple: the GAY FRERES bracelet! Plus, I will provide you with all the details about this ZENITH DEFY: Case dimensions, movement & price, just to name a few.
Attention! I mistakenly denoted the lug width at 22mm, which ist not correct and it is in fact: 18mm. Sorry for that!

Amazing video, I enjoyed every second of it, thank you! Extremely high level of narration and zoom! I bought my Defy with GF bracelet last August. Now the case it's being restored by an Italian lab and by Xmas I should be able to wear it!

The Defy Revival isn't going to be for everyone. That said, it's likely to be an acquired taste for some. Once you learn how to look at it, it's simply a very cool watch. There's a handful of dial variants worth revisiting and now a year or so later, a take on the diver variant shown briefly, was released at Watches & Wonders '24.

I enjoy their revivals. They are faithful to the original in most aspects. I would love to know how successful these models are, since I mostly know either Vintage enthusiasts OR fans of modern watches, but noone that owns a Revival. That Defy diver is very cool! 👍

Bin auf die Uhr durch die Neuveröffentlichungen aufmerksam geworden, die mir ausnehmend gut gefallen, allerdings nicht zum Listenpreis… Ich werde mal versuchen, eine Neue irgendwo live zu sehen. Hast Du eine Ahnung, ob sich die Schliesse der braunen Version von denen der Blauen und Roten unterscheidet? Die Braune hat wohl mit Absicht eine richtige „historische“ Blechschliesse, so ähnlich wie eine alte Tudor Submariner, rot und blau sollen aber eine modernere Schliesse haben… Wie auch immer, das Video ist sehr interessant!

Habe in den Bewertungen bisher nur gelesen, dass Gehäuse und Leiterband bei den drei Revival-Modellen gleich sein soll! Bezüglich Schließe sind mir keine Unterschiede bekannt, aber live habe ich die neue rote und blaue Version noch nicht gesehen! Bin gespannt, ob sich deine Vermutung bestätigt! Vielen Dank 👍

I would say Yes! With a 17,5cm wrist, I would consider the watch to be a bit on the smaller side, so it could work well on a 16cm wrist.

The question caught me a bit off-guard, as I never considered a COSC certification for a watch from the early 70s. After looking it up: It does not have COSC-certification and I found out that the COSC as we know it today was founded in 1973. Even the new Revival A3642 is not officially COSC certified, even though its movement would be within the specification, as far as I know. Interesting question! Thanks!

It is definitely a rare bird, but I do not know how many existed of this "der luxe" gold version. It is hard to find any offerings at all in the last years. Most go way into the lower 5-digit prices if complete with original bracelet and decent condition.
