"Great chunks of my past, detaching themselves like melting icebergs..."
The Five Doctors, the much loved and much released 20th anniversary #DoctorWho special, originally appeared on home video in the UK on VHS and Betamax formats during September 1985.
Subsequent releases on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and Blu-ray were all complete - and sometimes even longer than broadcast - but for reasons unknown, in 1985 BBC Enterprises used a slightly shortened version which appears to have originally aired in the US. The video above details all six cuts accounting for approximately 97 seconds of missing material.
CUTS
0:44 The Fourth Doctor & Romana take a punt - 41 seconds
1:08 Gloved frustration / Sarah Jane goes for the bus - 9 seconds
1:25 Grandfather & granddaughter, pursued by a Dalek - 13 seconds
1:47 Two nerds and a computer / Out for a little drive - 14 seconds
2:10 Man eats pineapple / Out for a little stroll - 10 seconds
2:29 Nice establishing shot, shame really - 10 seconds
SOURCES
1. 1985 VHS, edited compilation, no restoration (BBCV2020) - out of print
2. 2008 DVD, complete & restored (BBCDVD3483) - currently available

I think a world without The First Doctor enthusiastically eating a piece of pineapple is definitely a poorer one.

Even 35 years later - That BBC Video ident music still has a weird effect on me (Used to freak me out as a child, now it sends a chill down my spine)

Thank you for this video! I thought I was going mental that I never recalled Richard Hurndall eating pineapple in the Five Doctors but I was right! I grew up with the VHS - the very first ever Doctor Who story I watched, back in 1996. Thank you for your sterling editing work!!

So in the 1985 VHS version, we ended up with even less of the 4th Doctor! 😂

One day, somebody is going to use the BBC Video theme in the incidental music and bemused wives and husbands up and down the land are going to see their spouses laugh in surprise and recognition and sadness.

I rented this version repeatedly from 1985 onwards, and when the full length version was released in 1990 I got it for Christmas and the slightly longer Tom bit and the Pineapple snacking broke my brain.

Any plans for a comparison of the 1985 versions and the VHS one that came out in 1990, before the Special edition of 1995 and the DVD release for 2008? I got a feeling that as well as 'cleaning it up' definitely was something that was done to the transmitted one, but I think in certain cases, there's been a few tweeks here and there, which slipped past the eyes of even the viewers, who have probably seen every copy of the story that has been available since 1983.

I'll have a look at some point and see if there's enough to make a video worthwhile, thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not sure if it is a case of misremembering or something similar to the Mandela effect but I would like to know for sure, I once had a copy of the Five Docs recorded on the Children In Need night (25.11.83), and ever since I saw it, I haven't seen the 'original' as transmitted version, and I say that because I think I saw the distorted pic of Tom and Lalla on a screen in the Game control room, but every time since the screen is the one in the conference room made to look black. It's feels like I am only able to see it in my head, as I can't find any footage, even when I rewatch the trailer from the first time time round. Can you help?

Its always bemused me that the BBC paid someone to sit and edit arbitrary shots and sequences from those early releases. What was the reason??
@PipMadeley
@PipMadeley Год назад
It's been suggested that edits were made to ensure the compilations fitted onto 90 min tapes. In this case, however, I believe it was a pre-existing version for US broadcast.

Do not blame "beta" blame the edit of the BBC! Even the PBS version of Five Doctors had about two minutes edited out. Didn't know that for years! Parts were in the Target novel, yet parts in novel didn't match with the actual show. (my family had a Beta video by 1983- until like 1994, when blank-tapes were not sold, and the store videos were long gone. Better resolution, it was said of Beta.

Like many novelisations, such as Space:1999, for example, the writer was working from the actual shooting script, which often differed significantly from the transmitted prisoners. For example, the first episode, 'Breakaway', saw Commissioner Simmonds dying from a broken neck, sustained in the Breakaway event. This meant that a subsequent episode, 'Earthbound', which featured Simmonds, could not be novelised until E.C. Tubb finally wrote it in 2003.

Hi Pip, any plans to do a video of the cuts made to the VHS omnibus release of ‘The Deadly Assassin’?
@PipMadeley
@PipMadeley Год назад
I'd consider it but I believe it was only released as an omnibus in the US, not sure where I'd track down a copy? It was hard enough find the original UK release of The Five Doctors.

These cuts are so arbitrary and unnecessary - I heard people used to have to pay Top Dollar for these releases back in the the day. Also if someone is undoing the work of the original production team (whilst thinking they're adding to it) should their name as Editor not be on the Video Release Credits also? A total waste of time. What were they thinking?

This is the first VHS release that I bought as a kid and noticed the cuts as well. I have an off air one too that was in 4 parts but other than the episode breaks was uncut. When I watched the one from the store, I was noticeably wondering where the first Doctor eating the pineapple scene went.

After looking into many, many odd versions of Doctor Who episodes that were broadcast or released on home video, I feel confident in saying that the 'unknown reason' was 'they didn't know or care that there were two versions' more often than not. When the weird tape gets *created* there's usually a sensible reason (this one probably met some guideline for a two-hour US broadcast with ads). But when the weird tape gets re-used, years later, there was probably no thought put into it at all. In 2000 they sold a black and white copy of The Silurians to New Zealand, when the colour version had been available for 8 years. Fans immediately complained and they hastily dispatched colour copies of Autons and Daemons. In 2004, all of the above happened again in Australia. They just did not have an effective procedure to handle 'this is the proper copy' and 'this is the rubbish one from a repeat 17 years ago'

Given this being an omnibus episode, I'm surprised the BBC felt there was a need to edit The Five Doctors. Was the version used the slightly edited American broadcast? I'm surprised they didn't go the full hog and include this version and the 4-part repeat on the Season 20 BluRay.

aside from the insulting pineapple removal these seem like completely reasonable edits to me, even if they weren't done to improve pacing as has been suggested
