In September 2019, Nobel Laureate Martin Chalfie visited universities and research institutes in Canada as part of the Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative. He met students and researchers at Ryerson University, the University of Toronto, Queen’s University and McGill University, where he shared his journey towards the Nobel Prize.
The Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative (NPII) is a global programme designed to help Nobel Laureates share their inspirational stories and insights. By taking Nobel Laureates on visits to universities and research centres around the world, and by capturing their thoughts on video, the Initiative seeks to bring the Laureates into closer contact with the worldwide scientific community, and especially with an audience of young scientists. NPII Canada was delivered in partnership with AstraZeneca. For more information please visit: www.nobelprize.org/npii

The 4th statement can be misleading. Scientific method starts with observation, followed by a hypothesis to explain the observation and then rigorous unbiased examination of the hypothesis. The fact that the observation is often serendipitous, as in the case of great discoveries, doesn't mean that scientists do (or should) not use scientific method.

Exactly , and only a certain amount of discoveries are serendipitous, many other are discovered through great work with the right focus While being mentally open and not narrow, and not accidentally. many cases already know existing certain atributes of "that thing" or where to investigate even if breakthrough, there are already clue of the puzzle to point out at something you don't know yet in many cases, hence the convergence

myth 5: scientists are all white men He then proceeds to show all the kinds of people that have come through his lab. I want to see the data. The percentage of the diversity in the field of science.

That's almost impossible to measure. How do you define a scientist? Could say, a doctor be a scientist? How about a mathematician? I think more people work in science than they think, and it would be hard to measure global data

« Scientist are white men » it’s NOT a myth and acting as if it was a myth doesn’t help resolving the problem. This is a pure harmful denial when you base your stories on your own biased situation despite the fact that statistics shows a clear gap, in 110 medicine Nobel prizes, only 12 were for women, and not a single one for a black person. The educational system is unfortunately built on white man privilege and this need to be addressed but not denied or seen as a « myth ». Minorities live a battle in the world of science as well, it’s a reality not a myth. Nevertheless , congratulation for your prize and your remarkable work. Be careful when you talk on subjects that you don’t master.
