This is SOOOO awesome. I miss this era of the FLAMING LIPS sooooo much. They were on fucking fire at this point, but than so was Stephen's drug habit. So happy he wasn't another sad drug induced death.

This video is a great example of what it was like seeing them back in the 90's, except for the fact that you dont see the explosions of lights they usually had setup for when they kicked into overdrive.

@@djefferson5669 the Xmas Tree Lights shows were the best Flaming Lips shows that I have ever seen. I first saw them on September 25, 1987 in Vancouver at a wonderful but tiny (capacity of maybe 125) club called The Savoy. There were maybe 40 people in attendance. Their opening song was The Sex Pistols "Pretty Vacant" which segued into "One Million Billionth of a Millisecond on a Sunday Morning" that had a modest pyro explosion at the segue. They closed their set with "A Day In The Life" by the Beatles. Super friendly...extremely thankful that the local promoters paid them (they'd been getting short paid...even not paid...a fair bit on this tour) and, they were pretty jazzed about a few of us who took them to the best pizza slice place and fed them. My 2nd time seeing them was the next day at the same venue. A bunch of us made it down for the 2nd night and, we'd spread the word about how interesting and, trippy and, loud they were and, urged numerous people to get down to the show. About 75 people for the 2nd show. Their set was about 60% the same as the previous night (they had been playing a fairly consistent set every night of the tour but, Vancouver was their only 2 show city). The other 40% was mostly filled out with a fantastic variety of covers...Bo Diddley, Zeppelin, Summertime Blues (The Who version) Break On Through by the Doors, David Essex's Rock On, Sonic Youth, Scratch Acid, Sparks by The Who and, I'm almost certain that they played a Butthole Surfers song but I can't remember which one. After the show we chatted a bit, they were amazed that they were paid (more!) again and, we helped them carry gear out (approx 20 stair staircase). Before they split, Wayne gave me his address and, the address of the location of the place where he worked (Long John Silver's). Saw them every time they returned until around 2003. I guess I was spoiled by all the shows that I saw of them in their full-on guitar band days. Thankfully, footage like THIS survives to document the different eras of the band. For folks who never had the opportunity to see the Lips in this era...to be able to get an idea of what they were like...and, for old coots like myself to relive the magic. 💖🤘🔥

Thank you for that rare 40 minutes of who I think is one of the greatest sonic cultivators to ever pick up a guitar. Ronald Jones. Send more of his live work who ever may read this. We who look for sonic freedom need his guidance.

The amount of sounds that man created in just one song is more than most guitarists ever make in their entire careers.

This may be one of my absolute favourite live video recordings No Xmas Tree Lightshow because they were fortunate to be added to the SubPop Showcase But, a super strong setlist (maybe 3 songs cut from their "normal" setlist for this tour Pretty great video AND audio too BEST THING OF ALL... CAMERA IS DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF RONALD!!! Brilliant

@@pnguinkillr3091 my pleasure Jose! It is a particularly good vantage point of Ronald Jones and...a very good audio/video recording for the timeframe. Being able to film such a phenomenally heavy, noisy (awesomely noisy) and loud band that close with VERY minimal audio squealing feedback is truly wonderful Cheers

If Ronald came about, I’m petty sure my depression would be cured. But I get it. We love you RJ. There’re no Lips without you

Would drive anywhere in a 90 mile radius to see these guys play during these years . I always would turn to the person next to me and say “it’s them” right before they started . Just so vibrant so vicious!

Drozd is such a monster drummer! No disrespect to the deceased and family but to call Taylor Hawkins (who's a mediocre drummer at best) a legend then to see Drozd drum puts it in perspective.

Absolutely agree!!! When he finally switched to a more prominent role within the Flips musicianship the world wasn’t ready for the psychedelic brainfucks he’d craft in Zairekka, Bulletin, Yoshimi, At War, Embryonic and much much more!!! ✌️ and ❤
