Flintknapping is the craft of making stone tools that dates back to early man. Flintknapper Angela Parker demonstrates this ancient technique as she describes its appeal. See our story on Flintknapping in the September 2011 issue of TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE Magazine www.tpwmagazine...

Its so nice to see another female knapper. We are a rarity...I was beginning to think I was the only one. It helps that I live in Oregon near Glass Buttes where obsidian is all over the ground. Take care Sister Knapper. May your flakes be long and your points sharp. Julie

Angela does some great work and it is nice to see her at work on this video. She has a lot of good things to say! I believe that a lot of knapping was done by women during the times people made and used stone tools, this just proves my theory correct. She is a true knapper! -Paleoman52-

I had the extraordinary pleasure of meeting Angela Parker at the Bois D'Arc Primitive Skills Camp this past weekend. Angela is the nicest, pleasant person to talk to. Real down to earth, no pun intended. Angela's skills are off the chart awesome. Just ordered her dvd Flint knapping: 100 pounds of attitude. Can't wait to see her at the Bois D'Arc next year. Thank you Angela for being my friend

Wow so glad seeing your video! Yes I’m wanting to do same! I e been watching videos & wondering what changes I can make process since I don’t have the same muscle strength as he guys! I live in in far west Texas- more southern part- so wondering about finding chert, making/buying tools on not much money, finding other flintknappers, etc! I’ve found a few artifacts in my own yard plus some pieces of chert obviously left behind from someone oh and lots of little painted rocks often tools I think. I grew up in the Dakotas, fly fished and rock climbed with the boys so have kinda had your same situation. I always have looked for arrowheads EVERY WHERE but nada so now I’m just gonna make my own! Help!

it actually occurred to me why flint knapping is considered a male skill when in fact if men went out to hunt, who what would women be doing? well I know for a fact the 60% of calories produced for the tribe, was by foraging which was traditionally considered to be done by women and children. So it was more than just sitting around and doing very little so we could've had highly skill female flint knappers who could've raised the technological bar by trial and error, ie developing fishing spears, better arrow heads developing better spears etc.

Excellent. I'm a wanna be knapper. I try to keep the edge straight and sharp on my flintlock rifles. I've thought about trying arrowheads but need to find good candidate flint, watch someone do it right and instruction.

I like the video, well made. But I am not so sure about rocks "wanting" anything. It is what we can make from it, what we see in it.

Dave... don't know if you've tried knapping flint, but it does have what I'd describe as a 'grain', which can dictate the way it's worked.

No there is communication with the rock. The sound, tells you the properties of this particular fragment. And you adaptor fail.

I can see the logic in that, but based on all the documentaries that I have watched about the indeginous tribes across the globe I have yet to see a woman doing anything other than keeping the fire going, grinding some kind of meal, or breast feeding a child. I suspect that it is more likely that while men were on the hunt they saw that the different tips were better for different things, something that the women couldn't see unless they were there, so the men made their tips for specific hunts.

Is this an educational video? If so, why are you using non organic tools to flint knapp? Up until at least 6 thousand years ago in North America copper was not used for stone tool industries. The Archeological record indicates that copper was considered for precious ornamental use. Bone, stone, antler, ivory, horn, hoof & wood were leaving their signatures on stone. Perhaps when indiginous people started to smelt copper it was more abundant & possibly used to make stone tools. Copper nuggets undoubtedly were found and tried. However, nuggets big enough probably were prized. When they learned to smelt perhaps copper was more abundant & less valuable. Therefore a pre-Neolithic approach is where true knowledge is found. This is what the Archeological record seems to indicate. Vincent James Ajello (Lithic Technologist/researcher)

I don't understand why the usa flintknappers use modern flintknapping tools, if you use modern tools and slabs you can't say that you are a flintknapper, the flintknapping is with stone and antler tools, the flintknapping now is to discover how the humans make their tools and also use this tools to see how it works (i don't know how no explain correctly in English but i think you could understand me)
@alvarosilex192
@alvarosilex192 6 лет назад
But call flintknapping when you use modern tools is an insult to real flintknappers and to the experimental archeology in general

I got cut off on my text. I am a flint knapper and take pride to be one. Cant believe anyone thinks different and can say i am not a flint knapper Go tell a proffesional bull rider he isnt a bull rider because he wears a helmet. Bet that would be a good clip.
