Just a note on the Giltesa kit, if you plan to use it in a future project. The current pocket kit uses a tp4056, so you should only use it in places where the battery is not near the management IC. Allison did a great job moving the battery away and using a smaller battery to keep ample distance from the tp4056 chip. Giltesa is updating the kit to use the tp5000, which his new Gameboy Color kit uses, but that still has the same issue with overheating when charging.
Super cool and you can tell someone spent a lot of time/effort creating something unique but adding the hinge came at the expense of making a lot of other things about the unit feel like a giant compromise.
The only change I would make to the mod would be to push the buttons higher up and have the battery below the button PCB, also shift the power light to the side like an SP or original gameboy. I hope somebody else makes this with a translucent Atomic purple shell, that would look soo sleek!
This is a pretty fascinating design! I would add one pro to the design is that, while the cartridge isn't quite flush with the console, it's definitely cleaner than using Gameboy games on an official GBA SP; the bottom slot makes those suckers stick out like a sore thumb lol
Thank you for showing this off! Allison did amazing work here, I love this idea. :) I honestly like the idea of the cartridge loading into the top half better, the aesthetic is really fun even if it isn't the most utilitarian choice.
I actually love this design alot. I'd actually prefer if Nintendo put the cart slot behind the screen on the SP to look more like this rather than having a bulging GB cart coming out of the bottom. This looks amazing IMO
I would love to see a mod for the pocket that mimicks the horizontal orientation of the original Gameboy advance. Maybe I could do that one day once I start modding and get good at it but for now Im loving these easy tutorials
Ah the Pocket. Fond memories of playing a friends, but never owning myself. It really was a great iteration of GameBoy. This mod makes it even more cool.
Great mod! My first handheld and my first "own" system (my brother and I had an Atari 2600 and Sega Genesis) was the Game Boy Pocket. Ice Blue limited edition, still my fave system.
I am a sony dude but i recently softmodded my near mint condition DSi and i took my mint Gameboy color out of storage and i’m starting to get the whole nintendo community. Softmodding the old consoles is surprisingly easy but changing the shell and custom designing them is sooo hard to me and Alison did a craazy good job with this one. Congrats🙏🏼🙏🏼🔥🔥
My dream is a pocket Gameboy Advance. Imagine playing the full Gameboy library with one console that have gb pocket/colors disign meaning every Gb cartridge could sit flush in the console without weirdness. That would be awesome
I think that if you are going to make a Gameboy Pocket SP just add a way to connect it to your TV and make it a dockable unit so you can play it on a big screen. The one thing that wasn't mentioned is when the battery finishes charging on the Gameboy Pocket SP does the light go out or does it turn green that is something that would help people modding Gameboy Pockets so they know when it is charged.
I should of said this on my last comment but I really do hope to see you tackle on this mod! I would love to see you build it and see if you can improve on the cons of the device, such as the the game not being flushed to the device and possibly making the top of the hinge more tight so it holds better when you put it on any angle
I absolutely love this since it combines my two favorite consoles. I would just put some side lips to better support the cartridge. It appeared to move away from the back of the screen nevertheless amazing work
I feel like, though it would be very convoluted, you could runs wires and mount the cartridge slot to the bottom, and move the battery up to the top section. It would definitely add even more complexity to it, but would make it feel better to hold.
They already did make an official flip-open backlit Game Boy that already can play older DMG, Pocket, and CGB game boy games out of the box. It's called the Game Boy Advance SP. The GBA SP can do the exact same thing except this one can't play the GBA games
3:58 There is nothing worse in game consoles than LEDs which are still turned on during the game. I always covered them with black marker, cutted out or added additional resistors to make them darker.
Would be neat if you could separate the cartridge socket and put it on a ribbon cable, then you could make the cartridge housing act as a locking mechanism to slide down and hold it straight when opened 🤔
Pointless build but that IS the point. Great work. V2 could be a full custom PCB set and transfer the original components and put the cartridge slot on the bottom. Maybe incorperate charging on the main pcb at the same time. Based on this version i am sure Allison has the skills.
Would love to see a GBA SP in this better configuration with cartridges behind the screen in crystal transparent plastic , ,makes it look very chic like something out of the sharper image catalog , ,🤔🤔😎👍👍
I do wonder why she didn't place the cart slot and other boards in the bottom half instead? would of made the top lighter Probably to keep it more to the reminiscent of the Pocket, or signal issues over distance through those flex ribbons. another idea might be the issue placing fingers on the cart might causes, advance carts were a lot smaller afterall
I appreciate seeing the cartridge out of the way, however, doesn’t necessarily look flush and tight. There’s a bit of a gap between the game and the console 7:03
Just a thought. What if insted use a flat lithium battery and lay it behind the screen "making the case thicker" then relocating the cart slot to the top back side.. so reverse of a sp and thicken the bottom to accommodate the relocation. Rectifing the cart sitting funny and the over sized look. Not dogging it just burning ideas I wanted to share.. I should try to do a spin off and make what I described but I unfortunately won't but it be super cool to see 🤷♂️
Oh no, another mod I don't have to, but need to do xD Impressive work by Allison, what a thoughtful way of modding an already small console, I wouldn't have consider this was possible. Out of curiosity, how heavy is it compared with the original with AAA batteries inserted?
If I'm not mistaken I think you can go online and even get a clear shell to put on a Gameboy Advance SP so it's practically the same thing I don't know if that's just my opinion
I love the design except... why is there a need for the white LED to be on to indicate if the console is turned on? Surely ... if the screen is on, that means the console is on. Not trying to nit pick but it would be annoying if there is a light shone into my face while I'm gaming. If I have this console, the first thing I would do is remove that indicator. It's useful for charging sure.
