This movie was released in 1986. Jeff and Geena, having found people of comparable height (6'4" & 6'0" respectively) married in 1987. Sadly they divorced in 1991. Apparently, their marriage problems were insurmountable, despite their combined height. Was Jeff big the The 1980s? He was always big, or at least since he reached 6'4". Jeffis is a recording artist as a jazz pianist/singer. I can't watch this film. Too griss.

@shanellericcio first of the allure is that the ex boyfriend never left geena(her characters life) she has feelings for him on a subconcious level,thats why she never asked for her key back. in my experience quite a few women do this(however the creep factor is what this movie intels and nothing more)... jeff goldbloom(his character was suppose to be this superficial/nerdy charsmatic guy) but he got the directors to change it..

Jeff Goldblum first had a supporting role in Invasion of the Body Snatchers which got him a lot of attention. Then he got a break in a TV series called Ten Speed and Brown Shoe. A comedy buddy cop series co-stating Ben Vereen. The show got good reviews but couldn't find an audience and was short lived. This movie was his first leading man, staring role and made him a minor star. He seems to be selective in the roles he likes to play which has limited his stardom but, everyone knows who he is and everyone seems to like him. So he never became as big as someone like Tom Cruise but I dont think he wants to be. Seems very happy to be the affable odd ball in nearly every movie he does.

Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis were a couple in real life. They met on a movie set, but not this one. it was Transylvania 6-5000. They married in 1987 while filming their parts as leads in a wonderfully quirky film called Earth Girls Are Easy. Comedian Julie Brown wrote the movie and envisioned herself as the lead, but couldn't get financing, and that's how Geena Davis got the role. It's also one of Jim Carrey's first movies, and you'll see a late-80s Damon Wayans too. It's a super-fun movie and I'm sure you would enjoy it.

My all time favorite Horror Movie. Jeff Goldblum should have won an Oscar for his portrayal of Brundlefly. The twitches, the fear, and through it all he kept a sense of humor. I actually shed a tear when he grabbed the gun and pointed it to his own head. Glad you reacted to this classic.

Wrong. Paul Newman rightly won the Oscar that year, the only time he won, although Bob Hoskins in "Mona Lisa" was pretty incredible that year. I could see saying "Goldblum should have been nominated", but never in a million years would this have won him the Oscar. And if it HAD won the Oscar, it would have been an upset and people would be complaining that Paul Newman never won an Academy Award. Love Goldblum though. Should have been nominated for "The Big Chill" (although he wouldn't have won, it was a lock for Jack Nicholson that year).

@@TTM9691Wholeheartedly agree. I’m relieved that I don’t live in a universe where Paul Newman never won an Oscar (should’ve won years earlier for The Verdict, in my opinion, but Kingsley was both the immovable object and unstoppable force that particular year). However, as a massive fan of this film, in retrospect, it is a crime that Goldblum wasn’t even nominated; he is tremendous.
@lawrencefine5020
@lawrencefine5020 9 месяцев назад
@@TTM9691 I don't think I'm wrong. I seen all the top male performances that were nominated, and I still go back to Goldblum's Fly performance as the best that year. He should have been nominated and won. That's the great thing about movies, music, and art, it's all subjective and never objective. Agree to disagree.

4:49 This is honestly one of the best openings to a movie I've seen. In another film, you would spend the first 10 minutes on showing Seth waking up in the morning, say hi to his pets, ominous shot of the teleporter in the background. Ronnie comes in late to work, gets into a bit of a titter tatter with her creepy boss, he asks her to go to the party, she says she doesn't want to, but she goes anyway. Seth goes to the party and is awkward with some person, but then meets and hits it off with Ronnie. This movie just cuts all the unnecessary stuff snd starts right when the plot begins, when he discusses his work for the first time with anybody else.

I actually saw this movie in a test screening during the summer of 1986, and it had an additional scene at the end. We saw Stathis and Veronica sleeping beside one another, and she has a dream about a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis and fluttering away. I got the impression it symbolized her getting over the events of the movie. Or something.

The Los Angeles test screening at the Fox lot? The infamous monkey-cat scene had already been cut out after the Toronto test screening, but the LA screening had the Butterfly Baby epilogue (which was filmed four different ways-the version used for the screening was the one in the script, where Veronica is now pregnant with Stathis’ baby, and has the dream).

For me one scene that hits hard is when Seth looking like a gross monster says he was scared and Veronica hugs him. Another one is when he begs for mercy by putting the barrel of the gun on his head. In many ways, though it is amplified to an extreme, makes me feel for a couple where one of them is dying from a terminal illness and I fear having to go through something like that with my own partner.

That was a blast, Shanelle! Goldblum had been a memorable character actor since the 70s always sticking out. "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" from 1978 (which is great) is one of the early ones where he got to really do something, but even when he only had one line in "Annie Hall" he was memorable! By the time of "The Fly" he was a well--known, established actor, starring and co-starring in lots of films. He was part of the incredible all-star cast of "The Big Chill" from 1983, definitely knew who he was in that one.

The originals of not just "The Fly", but also "The Thing" and "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" are all good in their own right. That's why they were remade! They were beloved movies that played on TV constantly and which lots of us had seen lots of times before the (well-done) remakes. And the great part is that the originals are different - often VERY different than their remakes, so there aren't many "spoilers". The original version of "The Fly" with Vincent Price is totally good and worth watching, on or off the channel.

That was an astute observation, Michelle. this WAS a "love story". Print ads for the film called it a "terrifying love story". And the line "Be afraid, be very afraid" was used as the major tagline for the film in it's promotional material. Great review as always, ma'am! 🙂

I was very familiar with the original 1957 movie when I saw this in the theater. It is highly regarded as a classic and a cautionary tale of science gone awry, although do not expect the same level of horror makeup! One enticing bit of trivia from that original is that the two actors in the final sequence, Herbert Marshall and Vincent Price, required multiple, multiple takes to do it as they kept cracking up. Def worth a watch.

Can we give a big hand to Jeff Goldblums performance!!! Toward the end when he tried luring Geena into the telepod, the way he twitches and keeps his back hunched while he’s desperately trying to do whatever it takes to be human again. You can feel the anxiety and desperation in his mannerisms. This movie came out when I was 6 and I’m 43 now. I’ve seen so many movies over the years and this remains in my top 5. They don’t make them like this anymore. The effects, the acting, the music, the plot and the characters all tie together so well.

For quite a while, people called him Jeff "The Fly" Goldblum. This movie made him an international star instantly. I love Cronenbergs dark movie style. Like "Dead Ringers" (a real gem of slow psychological horror) ... Also, you have to love Cronenberg for his attempt to make a movie out of "Naked Lunch". I am a big fan of William S. Burroughs, too. Although very popular among artists and writers until the 90s, his extraordinary work was considered undoable as a movie. But hey, the same has been said about "Ex Drummer". A movie that I can HIGHLY recommend, extraordinary soundtrack, extraordinary story. Maybe Trainspotting can be seen as a similar style movie, but this said, "Ex Drummer" is unique - no doubt. Best regards. I really enjoy your perspective on movies. Clever and fun to watch reactions.

Compared to the original with Vincent Price, that movie didn't fuse the man and fly into a single being, but had a man with the head and hand of a fly, and a fly with the head and hand of a man. The man is killed in his lab, and the fly with man's head get stuck in a spiderweb and yells, "Help me!" over and over before the spider closes in.on him. He's put out of his misery by a person before the spider can get to him. I saw both the original in the '60s on TV and this version in 1986 in the theater.

7:29 - Hehehe. That's one of the things that separates good filmmakers from the rest: knowing how AND WHEN to use your score. I remember a long time ago Ridley Scott commented on how many fimmakers at the time (late '90s/early turn of the century) were overusing score, and sometimes you can use silence, it's OK to do so. Then he went on to cock things up with Gladiator but that's a whole different story.

I always get emotional at the end after Seth fused with the pod and points the barrel of the shotgun to his head and Veronica struggling with the thought of going through with it or not. Seth's last remaining "thought" as a human was choosing death. At that point Seth was all but gone and all that remained was the Brundle-Fly. Not to give away a spoiler for The Fly II if you choose to see it, but we kinda see the ramifications of a scenario if Veronica didnt kill Seth and the creature was kept alive.

Geena Davis gave a phenomenal performance that elevates The Fly to a haunting gut-punch of a film. I don't think anyone is prepared to see such _powerfully emotional_ horror when they decide to watch this. With someone else in the role, it's easy to imagine the Seth Brundle character falling flat. Jeff Goldblum gives us someone awkward and off-center, but also charming and charismatic. Then we see that person undergo a variety of personality changes, both long-term and in sudden outbursts. In the original film, also a love story at its core, the transformation is straightforward. The scientist ends up with a human sized fly head and hand. The fly, which survives ends up with a tiny human head and hand. It had two sequels, Return of the Fly and Curse of the Fly. The sequel to this one, simply called The Fly II was directed by Chris Walas, who did the creature effects for this.

Goldblum didn't get big until Jurassic Park. He always had an appeal though, because of his interesting face.

Dream interpreters say that shattered teeth dreams are basically our inner self telling us we’re loosing control of our own lives and we need to get our shit together. Had these reoccurring dreams myself when I was younger - looked up the interpretations and found them rather interesting to say the least.

I saw this for the first time in a theater as part of a double feature with “Aliens” back in ‘86. Not a bad two for the price of one combo back in the day. I was only 12, but my mom took me because she loved these kinds of movies, too.

My wife and I saw this movie on our first date in 1986 when she was 17 and I was 19. We will be married for 35 years this December. Moral of the story, for a happy marriage see a gross sci-fi movie early on and thing will work out great.

Fun fact: “Be Afraid. Be Kinda Afraid” was the tagline for the first Scooby Doo live action flick. Do “The Blob.” Lots of oozy-goodness! I just saw a reaction to the song “I’m A Blonde,” from the movie “Earth Girls Are Easy.” As mentioned in other comments here, Jeff and Geena Star in that one as well. That and “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension” are fun, goofy ‘80’s sci-fi comedies with Jeff Goldblum. I saw this on VHS.

Yes, you must see THE BLOB. You can make it a double-feature if you want--the original and then the remake to see how the 80s take on classic cinema changed perspectives--but Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont are the people responsible for the success of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series from Part 3-5 by establishing a mythology. I heard of this and ALIENS when they came out, but I was of course, too young to see them. I saw it years later on VHS and was amazed by how good it was. But by then, I was already aware of Cronenberg (CRASH had just come out by then) and his reputation. Cronenberg isn't the "Baron of Blood"--that's more Herschel Gordon Lewis--but he's the "King of Body Horror" as most of his early work is about bodies undergoing strange transformations due to existential catalysts. It's a 2-way tie between what his magnum opus is: VIDEODROME and THE FLY. But other must-sees of his are THE BROOD, NAKED LUNCH, DEAD RINGERS, and CRASH. But in the mid-90s, he started moving towards dramatic fare, and his work since 1994 has largely consisted of only 2 body-horror films: eXISTENz and CRIMES OF THE FUTURE.

Definitely a love story in the manor of king kong...geena davis was amazing. This one had the quote "be afraid...." the original had the high pitched "help me, help me.." a fly with a human head trapped on a spider web...

I love Jeff Goldblum in this movie and I liked how he didn't look like a typical fly, he looked like he had some sort of cancer and that gave his transformation a more believable feel with the whole theme being his failed experiment causes him to face his own mortality.

“The Blob” (1988) is a worthwhile gross-out horror movie that would make for a good reaction video. HOWEVER… the experience of watching that film is actually enhanced *IMMENSELY* if you have the 1958 original as a frame of reference. The Steve McQueen version is terribly dated, yes, but it’s actually a lot of fun and noticeable better than most of the “horror” films of the late 50s and early 60s. While it may be going too far to say the special effects are “great” in the 1958 film, I was actually quite impressed with what they were able to do back then. Obviously the special effects are vastly improved in the 1988 remake, and they’re definitely the highlight of that movie. The remake may not be a great film, but it has some very memorable moments because of some striking special effects sequences. They’re both worthy of your time. The 1958 theme song by Burt Bacharach and Mack David is soooo good too. Hard to resist a movie that opens with that! 😎
