The 30th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s fall has brought about a renewed interest in Jörg Berger and the footballing aspects of the Cold War in Germany. His son, Ron, is pleased people still admire him as one of the Bundesliga’s most charismatic operators, especially in Frankfurt, even if his own memories will continue to be coloured by the events of March 1979.

There is a film about the stasi called the lives of others a German film seen it years ago it was ok . More of a drama than action film .

@@samuraisoul1043 The Lives of Others is a great film and won Best Foreign Film at the 2007 Academy Awards. It's not really about the Stasi themselves, but about living in an environment with them. It is definitely a drama. Just like how this video more resembles a drama more than an action film.

I know Ron from my childhood, he was camping in the 80s in Prerow East Germany every summer like my family did. We played often volleyball and football together at the beach. He's a great guy.

you could make an entire episode just on how Berger saved Frankfurt from relegation in 1999. Shit was balls. Also Berger essentially build the Schalke team that won the UEFA-Cup in 1997 under Huub Stevens.

Funny, this semester i had a teacher in economics who grow up in East Germany, lol. Now seriously, i wish Tifo football could do more videos about football in East Germany, specially about the BFC Dynamo, who was the powerhouse of East Germany those days, about every player that defected, every player and coaches who worked for the Stasi as an informant(Torstein Gutschow, for example), and etc....

Berger was way better. At the example he guided schalke, which was more a jojo club at that time than a good side, to the third place in 1995/1996. He had big part in the win of the UEFA CUP 1997 thanks to this place, although he was sacked a few games into 1996/1997 replaced by Huub Stevens another legend.

(I'm typing this off of memory, so corrections are appreciated) after the second world war, where Germany lost to the allies, it was split into two halves - the West (capitalist) one, representative of the US, and the East (communist), representative of Russia. both sides were separated by the Berlin Wall. living conditions on the East side weren't great at all, so many ran away to the West. as such, Russia implemented a MASSIVE spying network in East Germany, which was the Stasi. its goals, for short, were to essentially find and punish "traitors of the State". so basically, the manager in the video ran from East Germany to West Germany, and as a result, the Stasi considered him a traitor and continuously attempted to punish him and his family for it. all of his son's rejections into football clubs, school and the like were the Russia-backed spying network acting behind the scenes because they don't want people leaving East Germany for a better place. hope this helps put the video into context! (and if you're interested, do some research on your own; as I said, I'm typing this off of memory and might've gotten something wrong. cheers!)

Sort of amusing Berger would be bothered by former DDR officials in the German FA after reunification considering all the former Nazis that were kept around in the west despite supposed denazification, though I guess by '79 he wouldn't have seen much of that.
