The original Beatles CDs have never been popular with audiophiles but in 1992, before the curse of noise reduction took hold, EMI produced the best and most authentic sounding set of Beatles music on CD to date - the CD EP Collection. In this video we look at why this set sounds so good and even present some clips for you to judge for yourself. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Wow Andrew, those audio samples really convinced me that I need to pick up this set. The 87 and 2009 samples sounded very similar to me, but the CD EP samples were so much clearer and more vibrant. Thanks for putting something else on my plate that I need to buy haha

I received this as a Christmas gift in 1993. Having already owned all the albums on CD, I never really played this set. Almost sold it to my local CD store a few years back where they were gonna offer me $18 for it. I’m glad I kept it. After owning the 2009 sets for a number of years now, I decided to give this set a proper listen. Was I surprised! I absolutely agree with you and the community!

Hearing the actual audio clips I don’t feel like the EPs necessarily beat the 2009 CDs every time. They’re very bassy but when they’re good they are VERY good.

WOW! I'm so glad you can actually use samples to compare now in your videos, and the differences are VERY noticeable. When I was managing a CD store from 1992-2001, someone traded in the CD singles box set (3" version) and the CD EP set, so I grabbed them both. Nice to know these are in my collection. Now I want to rip them. Thank you!

In my opinion, the mono 1987 CDs don’t sound as good as the 2009 mono remasters but the 1992 EP CDs are a totally different animal. There is a noticeable boost in the low end compared to the other two and it really does sparkle. However, I prefer the 1987 Magical Mystery Tour stereo CD because it is more dynamic than the 1992 CD.

I bought this EP set when it came out. I have loved it from that day on until this present day. The day I got it home and opened the shrink wrap felt like Christmas Day, even though it wasn't. I still have it and play it regularly. Thanks, Andrew. Once again. Loved the video. !

Absolutely agree Andrew. I bought this set when it came out - principally because I wanted to hear some of the mono mixes on CD. But it soon became clear that these were superior transfers and compared well with the original vinyl E.P.s. The whole E.P. format appears to have been almost forgotten and neglected, but I would always advise picking them up if you see them. Thanks for a great video. 😃

Question: Is the Beatles CD ad at 2:30 from 1987 or 2009: If it's the former, it's strange that the ad is showing the first four albums in stereo. I also see that the set errs in using "Your" instead of "You're" for Baby You're A Rich Man. I'm surprised that error, seen at 4:01, would slip through. And yes, the 1992 mixes are the fullest and most pleasing.

I found this in the sound comparisons: the 1987s were thick and details were lost in the phasing, the EP tracks were a little more thin and bright than the 2009s, and I found that they lacked the fullness that they got with the remasters. my pick for favourite is the 2009s, which is good because I've got the box set.

Listened twice. First time through the TV, then thru Quad 33/303 and ESL57s. The sound was a lot brighter on the 87s. the 2009 CDs sound lifeless and bass sodden. The 1992 sounded astonishing! Dynamic with a true punchy bass. Thanks for the comparisons, great review! 👍

Great video, Andrew! I grew up on the '87 CDs - the only '09 remasters I had were Yellow Submarine and Past Masters. It was only in 2019 that I finally decided I needed to get the Stereo and Mono boxes in order to both 'feel complete' and have the best listening experience. Somehow, I got genuine copies of both for around $110 combined! It was a joy, but felt a bit sad that in two purchases I was already complete - I was in a total Beatles collecting mood and wanted to find more CD sets to enjoy! I decided the EP set would be a great addition, and at the time it was readily available for around $40 USD. I found a seller who had just listed a mint copy for $30, and I had the audacity to offer them $23, which was accepted almost immediately! So, only a few years later, it's shocking to hear $70 US being a 'good value' on it!! Definitely an increase in demand, and I am sure this video will only further that. Think I'll get the box out and enjoy it all over again!

I'd have to agree that the '92 EP box sounds the best. The bass is richer and the top end sharper, which overall makes for a punchier sound. Quite a surprise! But a bigger surprise was that the 2009 remasters sounded the worst! Far worse than the 1987 CD's to my ears.
@thechuckster6838
@thechuckster6838 Год назад
Right off the bat, the 2009 CD's are useless. Both the mono and stereo boxes sound atrocious. Plus, on the early (Please Please me/With the beatles) stereo discs, the mastering engineers have narrowed the stereo image quite a bit. Regarding the EP box set, it has the most punch and clarity and oozes analog bliss. There are some exceptions between the 1987 discs and the EP box. A few of the tracks from the 1987 box do sound better than the EP box. But, it all comes down to who's hands are on the controls when the mastering is taking place. I can take any track from the 1987 CD's and make them sound liker the EP set. The phasing problem on the 1987 CD's could be corrected with modern equipment. Also, there should not be any phasing problems when playing back a full track tape on a stereo machine. The drawback from doing that is that the output of the stereo machine will be dramatically lower, as you are now dividing the total fluxitivity of the tape onto smaller sampling spaces. If done right, and if the Azimuth is set up correctly on the two track playback deck, there should be zero issues doing it that way. Great video as always.
@JaredLekites
@JaredLekites Год назад
I don't tend to agree that the EP set sounds better than the 2009 remasters. The EQ is far too typical of Peter Mew's 90s work. Even without his usual parade of NR, he still pushes up the middle high end and makes the bottom end a bit too "boomy". The 2009 remasters, or at least the 2009 monos are more relaxed sounded and are probably a bit more faithful to what is on the tapes. Just my 10p's worth. Still a nice box, eh?

Here's the report from a pair of nearly 60 year old ears with bad tinnitus: To me, the 1987 versions seem to have a "brightness" about them. It would be wrong to say "thin/tinny" but lets just call it a brightness. I own the original 10987 CD's and have never replaced/upgraded them. I still listen to them today, so it's the versions of these songs that I'm most familiar (comfortable?) with. The 2009 versions: again, taking into account my bad hearing, the 2009 versions seemed sort of muffled as opposed to the 1987 versions. The brightness and snap of Ringo's cymbals and "snap" of George's guitar licks are greatly reduced to my ears in the 2009 versions. But the bass (Paul) seems to have been boosted, which is great. Kind of nice to hear deeper bass. 1992 EP's set: to me, it sounds like a "compromise" between 1987 and 2009. The EP's are not quite as bright as 1987, and not as deep/bassy as 2009. It's a nice sound. Again, just what my old bad ears are hearing. I've stuck with my 1987 CDs far longer than I probably should have (!!) but to me, that's the sound I expect from The Beatles. And overall, the differences between different masterings isn't enough to get me to buy all new CDs. I just can't hear real significant differences...not enough to where it sounds like a whole new song. P.S. : THANK YOU for including a snippet of "Tell Me Why". To me, "Tell Me Why" is the greatest "hidden gem" of all The Beatles songs. EASILY in my top 10 favorite Beatles songs, yet apart from big Beatles fans, nobody knows or even talks about "Tell Me Why". I guess that means you and I are in a secret, exclusive club that appreciates that song, Andrew! :)

What a wonderfully noticeable difference in clarity and fullness from the EP discs. You have to wonder why the greatest catalog in pop/rock history has never been presented correctly. This also proves that CDs can sounds just as warm and dynamic as vinyl if the transfer and mastering is done right.

Generally I agree, the 1992 CD EP versions sounded the best. By the way, this EP box set was released in the US, too. The covers are generally the same but they add a US catalog # to each EP (which seems superfluous since, as far as I know, they were never offered for sale as individual CD EPs), and the catalog # C2-15852 on the spine of the box. (There is also a Capitol logo, again superfluous, since these weren't Capitol EPs. So the box spine shows Capitol, Parlophone and Apple logos!)

The bass sounds almost too loud to me on the EP set, while it's a lot more clear I'm not sure I prefer the sound of it. I think Tell Me Why is the one that was the most clear improvement to me, but for some the Bass was almost too overpowering the rest of the songs. Maybe it is down to RU-vid mucking with the audio.

To my ear, I'm not convinced there wasn't some EQ applied to the 1992's, If they are truly flat transfers that is amazing. Those ‘92 issued CD’s just have an almost bouncy and more energetic feel than the others, and you can see on the waveforms that they haven’t been basically ruined with noise reduction. They line up with exactly the feeling you get from that 1992 set. Again, thank you, Andrew. Even if I don’t end up grabbing it, it’s just some more great musical knowledge to have. ✌️🔊😊🎶

Looking at the 87 versions, you can see they're not quite in mono (the left and right channels aren't quite in sync, I suppose that's the phasing issue you mentioned), whereas the 92 and 09 versions look properly mono. The problem with the 1987 and 2009 mono CDs is that (except for Magical Mystery Tour in 2009) there is *zero* treble. I was really disappointed with the sound when my mono box arrived. To me, the selling point in the end of the 2009 mono box was a combination of 1) the physical presentation [very faithful reproductions of the original album artwork], and 2) that for the post-1964 material, you'd get to hear some of the nuances present in the mono mixes that aren't in the stereo mixes [the "Norwegian Wood" cough, the alternative "Piggies" oinks, and the atrociousness that was the mono Sgt. Pepper's album -- yes, I said it, and I will die on this hill: the mono version of that album is HORRIBLE]. The 1992 EP set sounds better than both, but to be honest, not by much. The thing is...the records themselves don't sound any better, either, with the muddy EQ.

I have the Japanese edition of this, labeled EMI / Apple / Odeon (no Capitol logo on the box nor in the booklet). I like listening to it, although I find there is a kind of reverberation in the background which should not be found on original tapes + treble seems to be boosted a little bit too much. I would love to get a brand new mono mix from master tapes which would be a kind of combination of these EP mixes (perfect dynamics wide range) and 2009 mono mixes (good EQ but too heavy bass).

Not a fan of the sound of it. It has bass treatment choices I find odd and artificial sounding. What this comparison drives home most to me is how poorly the '87 BEATLES FOR SALE CD sounds. The 2009 mono CD sounds a LOT better. The '87 PLEASE PLEASE ME is nothing spectacular either, but not as bad. The 2009 is a pretty good improvement. The A HARD DAYS NIGHT samples are interesting...the original CD is not bad, and while the 2009 is more refined, it could be better.

No, the tracks in Mono sound normal when used on Early equipment. Cd players before 1992 - What, true stereo really means: is that the true separation of both tracks are present - Compared to today, where Mono and stereo are pushed together. True mono Mixed tracks have an empty track which, On most tracks have deteriorated over time. The tracks often have clicking popping noises(Not the same Clicking and popping as you would hear on any LP or 45). I might try and put out a Demo of this, that is if I start to feel better! from being as Ill as I have been lately! Baby's in black : would be the first Version heard : Any time At All, Should be heard Fast so the seccond version heard is not correct - The First one and third are correct. Kom Gib Meir Die'ne Han'd : .... well, Ill try to finish this when I can!

This set was the holy grail when I was working for HMV in 1990-92. I REALLY wish I'd bought it. I'll not lie though, I cannot hear any differences between the three. I guess i'm just a philistine.

As long as there is one drop of milk or something that sufficiently looks and tastes like milk in that milk cow, the poor animal will not be allowed to enjoy her retirement. Goddammit selling normal Beatles CD's for 21 Euro, that is pure rip off. Even the 16 Euro's is still asked for the Pink Floyd CD's sounds very modest in comparison. Hey, I do understand their albums are not "Mid Prize" stuff, but hell, 21 Euro's.... Shame on you guys !

As much as I love the 2009 mono box, compared to the 87 and 92 releases they sound very flat and lacking of power. For me the 1987 sounded the brightest and most powerful, but those 1992 CDs certainly sound great! You've convinced me that I should really pick up the set!

Many of the '92 sounds have a bit more 'richness', 'presence'...? As if there's a very good quality exciter and / or compressor in there. Sounds slightly more dimensional, and the bass end slightly more pepped up(!) I'm a proud owner of this box-set, some dear friends gave it to me one Christmas, knowing that I'm a Beatles Maniac.

Not that it's needed, but, YES, the EP samples are the best sounding versions!

I feel that everything is hit or miss. Some of the EP samples sound as if they came from an overly compressed source. Then, many of the EP's have great bass. Overall, with the Beatles' CD's in general, I prefer the true stereo versions over the mono versions. The stereo sound is much more open and often the equalization has a higher bias so the sound comes through clearer. Many CD's are like this and it is what originally attracted me to the CD format, plus the lack of ticks and pops you'd hear on records. I remember when the Beatles CD singles box and EP box came out. Because they were mostly mono, I passed them up. I went for the 45 rpm singles bax because, if you are going to hear the Beatles singles, it is best to hear them as was originally intended. The problem is the the singles in the singles boxes are based on the U.K. singles versions. In the U.S., all the new Beatles singles on Apple, after Hey Jude were stereo. The U.K. versions of those singles are mono. Then, I think that there were a couple of singles which were issued in the U.S. but not in the U.K. I guess that it comes down to where you were raised as far as singles preferences go. In the U.S. we didn't get the EP's as EP's overall didn't draw U.S. interest, not like they did in the 1950's.

I have this set as well as the later release CD singles box set. I picked it up for around $60 maybe $70.00 not very long before the 2009 remasters came out. I wanted it as a curiosity, but I found the sound to be excellent and have always liked this set overall.

Definitely the sound of the 1992 EP CD is much better even than that of 2009! But... for the common fan, it is now impossible to get the mono box from 1992, or not? I only have the one from 2009. What you have is a gem Andrew!!! (could you help me get it?)

To be completely honest, I think the 2009 CDs sound flatter and more neutral, which I prefer. The 1992 CDs do sound great and were transferred well, but I feel like I'm mostly hearing an EQ difference - the bass and treble seem a little boosted giving it a gentle smiley-face curve. Maybe it's just the system I'm listening on.

I really can't Understand why you would get Blocked, When there are you tubers that Play Whole songs And Albums On here. Then you have The people that do the Reaction Videos, And they Also play the Whole songs to. Just Curious my friend. Great vid though. And i am a Massive Beatles fan, The first Album i ever heard was the Please Please me Album, It was my moms, And i think i Nearly wore it out I played it that much pall. I do have a lot of collectable Beatles on CD. I have the DECA set, And that's very interesting to listen to. DECA didn't no what they had, I bet he kicked himself for years after letting them go and telling them they had no talent.

Bummer 😂 I could’ve picked this up cheap, in mint condition, less than a year ago. I already had the UK Singles Collection on Cd and didn’t see the need to add this. Like in Jim Carrey movie “Lier Lier” I’m going to the men’s room right now to “Kick My Own Ass”!

So the common held belief that vinyl pressings all sound slightly different and digital formats all sound the same has been well and truly exploded. Even I can hear difference in clarity. I bought these boxsets when they came out but haven't played them since. Your videos make me dig out and blow the cobwebs off all these items.

Nice item Andrew, informative and interesting. While on the subject of comparisons between audio qualities, would it be possible for you to 'audition' the 2014 U.S.A beatles box set. I think to my ears it is different to the 2009 mono and stereo masters. I was never a fan of the different track listing, but you do get both mono and stereo on one disc with most of the fake stereo versions removed. All the true mono versions are used with no fold downs. To me some tracks sound slightly better than the 2009 sets, although i have no way of measuring this visually the way you do. Could there possibly be less limiting in the U.S.A set ? Great channel Andrew, looking forward to this Sunday !

So after all that i suppose another re issue of all mono albums will be done yet again?these eps do actually surprise me how good they sound compared to the especially 1987 cds...even better almost than 2009 ones.i was disappointed with 2009 cd mono albums which baffles me why can't Emi get this right?! Maybe it was done on purpose to plug the mono vinyls? I think cds can sound good if the effort was made..nothing is impossible....

I remember years ago wondering whether to invest in the EP collection or not but being a serious Beatles fan (and quite obsessive about sound quality) I couldn't resist and ended up buying it regardless. So glad I did as it was apparent from listening to one disc that the sound easily surpassed the 1987 masters. Even after the 2009 remastering there's something about the sound in this box that makes it a keeper. Great channel btw.

Wait 0:40 - "it been just 20 years since the release of the Beatles' debut 45" - in 1992? Wouldn't that be 30 years? 1992 is just a few months short of the halfway point between Love Me Do and now. But yeah ... the 1992 mono does sound different and richer on the low end I think?

As always, thanks for such a good video. I picked up this box set about 3 weeks before this video came out, luckily for 50€. I was amazed at the quality of the sound! I can't believe it's been ignored for so long. I have both the 2009 mono and and this set and I feel the songs here have a bit more punch. Do you agree?

$400.00 hardly affordable and fewer songs. I like the 1987 versions best, 2009 least, and EP a close second to the 1987.

After seeing your video I ordered this through Discogs and I am so pleased I did. It arrived today and I can confirm the sound quality is excellent. In fact it is the best reproduction of these recordings I have ever heard. I am actually noticing things I hadn’t heard before. After 60 years! The best thing about it for me is that you can follow the harmony vocal lines so easily. Thank you so much for your recommendation.

Even at 1.5 x speed I could hear how the 1992 version of the same songs sounded better than the 1987 or 2009 CD remasters. Like using DBX out on a tape recorded using DBX.

WAW, I actually have this set, But very sadly as you are talking to us on this video, I have checked the disks and there are a few missing, I brought the singles set and the EP set from my friends retro store were we live, The singles set is Complete, But some are missing in the EP set. i think he through the LP set in as a bonus. he may not have checked how many was in there, I don't think he knew to be honest. he buys on impulse. Thing is do you know where i could replace the missing CD's, Can you buy. them separate. I am a bit gutted to be fair, Especially when you said the set is the Best sounding Beatles CDS out there. Sadly i only have 10 of them. Anyway i liked your video a lot My friend. Before i go, how Collectable is the singles set, Cause that one is Complete mate.
