Would a rival ever help another rival out and be generous? Well, in 1995, that's what the St. Louis Rams were hoping that the San Francisco 49ers would do, when the Rams requested a schedule change after construction of their home venue, The Dome, was delayed. As for San Francisco's response to St. Louis' request? You can imagine how that went...

@@northstarpokeshipper2148 Thanks, I remember that but wasn't thinking of it because the request was denied, I believe by the League. I think that the Cardinals may have been neutral on it though coach Gene Stallings said that his attitude was to "play the hand that you're dealt*" As a season ticket holder, I was at that game. My wife at the time, when seeing Washington come on the field in their burgundy, asked if that would be confusing not realizing that the Cardinals opted to wear white to reflect the heat. In hindsight I'm thinking that the Cardinals should have had 1:00 Eastern (10:00 am local) start time because that heat isn't quite as bad earlier in the day. * Parenthetically, I'll add that that quote resonated with me because even decades later I've used it professionally when colleagues whining about situations and demanding unnecessary changes.

This is very similar to what happened in 1979 between the Sounders & Timbers in the NASL. For some context, the Sounders-Timbers rivalry is the biggest & longest standing soccer rivalry in the US with almost 50 years of history between the two teams across the various leagues of American soccer including MLS. Heading into the 2nd match up of the 1979 season, the Timbers were scheduled to host the Sounders at Civic Stadium (now Providence Park) as they had done for the past 4 seasons. However the Portland Beavers minor league baseball team was in the middle of a home stand which meant that the Timbers could not play this match at Civic Stadium. The Timbers tried to find another suitable venue in the Portland area (heck they even called the Oregon Ducks to see if Autzen Stadium was available) to no avail. Then like the Rams, the Timbers asked their rivals the Sounders to host this match at the Kingdome with the Timbers hosting the 3rd & final game. The Sounders said no to this as they had already planned to be on the road that week. Even if they wanted to, the Sounders could not host this match, as the Kingdome was being used by the Mariners for a home stand. In the end West Linn HS (in nearby Wilsonville) offered up their stadium to the Timbers to host this match which the Timbers agreed. As for how the match turned out, it ended 3-1 to the Sounders in front of a crowd of 1,500 people (the smallest crowd to ever see a league game between the two teams) way below 25,000 the Timbers would have gotten if the match had taken place at Civic Stadium.

In 1971, the Cowboys first two home games were at the Cotton Bowl due to Texas Stadium construction delays. Other swapped divisional games for shared stadium conflicts: 1985 - Cardinals/Eagles swapped home games because the Cardinals were playing in the NLCS. 1989 - 49ers/Saints swapped because the Giants were in the NLCS.

The 1990 NLCS forced the Bengals to swap their game with the Oilers to the Astrodome. Interesting for two reasons (not just cause they got blown out 48-17): It gave them five straight road games, and the Steelers getting to keep their home game with the Chargers the week prior actually helped facilitate it. Interestingly enough Game 7 would not have been played on Sunday but Saturday night, however the turnaround would have been too quick. It was all a moot point as the Reds eliminated the Pirates in six thus no game seven.

I went to an event with my dad and I was listening to the radio broadcast of the Falcons/Buccaneers game that was running at the same time as 49ers/Rams (Falcons/Bucs was blacked out throughout Central Florida). I got wind of what happened in St. Louis and I was shocked because going into that game, I thought the Rams were legit. I had no idea about the Rams trying to switch dates with the Niners, but I think the Niners did the right thing due to how their schedule would've played out if they switched. Also, the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardianals didn't even make the MLB playoffs that year, so the World Series argument was DOA.

The even worse part about this is that the play at the plate wasn’t even close and Madrigal was tagged out easily. Another awful part about this is that Bellinger flied out to end the game. If Harris keeps Madrigal at 3rd and Bellinger hits that exact same fly ball,Madrigal tags up and scores to tie the game. Then the Cubs would have a runner on 2nd, and a base hit likely ends the game. The person you would have trusted to walk it off was Christopher Morel. Morel already had a walk off hit in May against a division rival. I’m a Cubs fan myself, and this probably cost us the game.

I went to a few Rams games in STL during the "GSOT" era and the atmosphere in the dome was electric, but like with a lot of bad teams the fan support disappears when the quality of play goes down, or in the Rams case, way down, like "Keith Null as your starting QB" down.

This whole, "St., Louis, is a great town for sports," nonsense, is a complete myth, they only love the Cardinals, period, football failed multiple times, basketball failed multiple times, as well, (despite, an, NBA, Championship), the Browns would move, and, there's zero doubt that the Blues are only still around because they won the, 2019, Cup.

@footwork216 Losing SB 36, meant, that the Rams were history, it was only a question of when, the Patriots are, "Too Big To Fail," but, even during the, Dynasty, fans often left in droves during blowouts, despite, strict, no, re-entry, policies.

@@matthewdaley746as evidenced by the 50 years the Blues were there and getting fan support before winning the cup.

@jeffanderson3962 It's complicated, they were also where teams looking to build, Champions, and/or, Dynasties, would trade their trusty, "Bag, Of, Pucks," to acquire, "The, Final, Piece," and, unfortunately, nobody, knew/cared, that they're, repeatedly, totally, fleeced, because of a, deceptively-long, Playoff Streak, during which they won, zero, Cups, zero, Conference Championships, and, reached the, Conference Final, exactly, twice, (1986, 2001), blame the diluted, Playoff Format, the Flames missed Brett Hull's entire prime, only winning the, 1989, Cup, because the Oilers collapsed, and, the Blues were never good enough with him, proving there can be a trade, neither, side wins, despite, a Championship, the Flames didn't win another, Playoff Series, for fifteen years.

OJG, your argument that this “was entirely within the Rams control” is frankly wrong. Construction delays can be sudden and unplanned for. Also the Rams were not actually building the stadium, a construction company was, also you have inspections, and fixes, and other things that need to be taken care of to get a certificate of occupancy. None of which is in your or in this case the Rams control. Does that mean the niners had to agree to swap the dates, no. But had they chosen to no one was being screwed over at all. As for tickets you tell the fans that already have tickets on the original date your tickets are good on the new date. This is and was a none story.

I said the same thing. It's like he thinks the players, coaches and staff for the rams are building the dome..his analogies really didn't make sense to me. Even the airline not scheduling enough crew. The fact is even if it is their fault, you need THEIR plane so their lack of scheduling does become your problem.

Ya'll can take away the rams from st louis but you can never take away our Superbowl and the greatest show on turf..They will always be the St Louis Rams..gateway to the west, is now the gateway to the best football team in the world!

They had to go back west to finally beat Tom Brady, though, that's, seriously, a sore spot, and, that's after they'd lost another SB to him, terribly rough, it is.

0:13 I've always heard this told to me as "failing to plan is planning to fail" but the effect is the same. Also, modern society now emphasizes and celebrates screwing others over for one's own mistakes, to the point where actually taking accountability seems to be on the ever-growing list of things we're now forbidden to do.

but the entire premise of this video is flawed. The examples he used in the beginning of the video don't make sense when compared to the story. He makes it sound like the players, coaches and staff were building the dome themselves. The Rams football team had absolutely no control over construction. It was a contractor who built the stadium and it's A government agency that owns and operates it.
