What happens when a Japanese company hires an American luthier to build a 1990s super strat? This is the story of the 94-96 Ibanez USA Custom RG models built by Dave Bunker. With some truly unique features, this is a guitar that needs to be appreciated by today's generation of guitarists.
Good luck finding one!

UCEW1's (USA Custom Exotic Wood models) were far better guitars than these USRG30's. I've had them side by side and the PBC-made USRG30's leave a lot to be desired. UCEW1's were fantastic though!

It's interesting that you mention Dave Bunker because he had a shop back in the mid to late 89's in Coopersburg, Pa. His guitars all had the tention free neck. I played some of the guitars he had there, and they were awesome guitars. I wish I had bought at least one of them.

Very interesting guitar with novel features. As an Ibanez and Steve Vai fan, i have Japan made versions, which are superb compared to todays Indonesian samples, which i find are hit or miss. When it comes to these guitars, the older Japan made samples are superior to what they make now. I was not aware that these USA ones existed. Thanks for improving my knowledge of the RG550.🙂

They had a USA custom shop that did work for artists. It also produced some high-end series like this USA Custom, which I believe was constructed from scratch in the US. Other models were assembled in the US from bodies and necks made in Japan. They also made the US Custom exotic wood series (bolt-on, AANJ) and the American Master (set neck) series, neither had the tension-free neck. I see exotic woods on Reverb right now for 1.3k EU-1.6k EU (overpriced imho), and I see MA's from 3.1k to >9k, which is just absurd. I saw an exotic wood offered for 750 EU many many years ago. A blue stained model, with (repaired) body damage around the controls. Still kicking myself for not picking it up.

Great Guitar. Out my price range but you never know. Guitars and Gear prices have gone through the Roof in the last year. With the Internet, finding deals is rare and in the case of any deal popping up, you gotta be quick. I'm a huge fan of Japanese Guitars made by great Luthier of the 70's. An American Custom Ibanez is a Dream Guitar of mine. Wes Hauch has some amazing Iceman models and in 7 String. I used to play the beautiful Prestige Models at a local shop in So.Cal and they weren't that out of reach in the early 2000's. Interesting Neck design. Thanks for sharing.

Very cool looking at rare incentive guitars.. great episode.. looks like the headstock is mechanically separated from the neck taking more of the string tension and less on the actual neck making it straighter.. guessing the adjustment is only to artificially add some relief since the string tension does not affect the neck as much.. just my guess there.. very cool..

The Tone Zone P.U. can make just about anything Rock. Bought a used guitar & found that the bridge P.U. just didn't put-out so I grabbed the Meter and it only read 3.5k? Jumped on eBay to find a Tone Zone (cheap) cuz the lead had been cut-off @ about 6" and that would be exactly what I need. Now I own the last one built at the Mats? I never understood why Ibanez doesn't open up the LA Custon Shop for ''mere mortals'', when ESP has one super expensive and proper custom shop in Japan and opened another super expensive, semi-custom shop in the USA? (FYI: The USA ESP models are not fully customisable like the Japan custom models, for example: you can't get a tremolo on a Horizon II, neither OFR nor other manufacturer. Hell, you can't even get a different type of fixed bridge!)
@GuitarMAXMusic
@GuitarMAXMusic 2 года назад
It's probably that there just isn't enough demand for it to make it profitable. An LA custom shop would be expensive to run, and there's probably only a handful of people that would get guitars there.

@@GuitarMAXMusic Ibanez in general has a strange business policy, they´re the only major guitar company that doesn´t manufacture their guitars themselfs. They don´t own a factory of their own, but instead outsource all the manufacturing to other companies like Fuji Gen and Cortek.

Forgotten!? This is the holy grail of Ibanezes! I've seen them on ebay occasionally, for around $2.5k I believe. More than I'm prepared to pay unfortunately, and this video may drive up the price even more :( This particular one looks brand new. No wear on the hardware whatsoever, and the finish looks smooth as a mirror. It must have spent 28 years in a case, I can hardly believe it's real. But it would be hard to forge these, given the oddball tension-free neck system.

I'm just spitballin' here, but it sounds like neck relief is achieved with a Gotoh side adjuster, like what Warmoth Pro necks use, except unlike the Warmoth, there's no main adjuster at the heel or headstock. Warmoth Pro necks have a main heel adjust for doing major adjustments as well as the side adjuster which is for minor adjustments only. There is still a truss rod, but the Gotoh side adjuster utilizes a wedge shape to apply minor rod pressure. There must be a rod of some kind in the Ibanez neck or maybe just stiffeners and a unique way to apply some pressure to them to cause adjustment from the side access hole. Maybe someone here knows for sure?
