As a middle schooler in a Catholic school, we were taught that, as you say, immediately after death the soul does have a glimpse of the true Glory of God, and for those souls who are damned, the torments of Hell all stem from knowing that for all eternity you will never see that again, and knowing that you are responsible for your own damnation, and deserve your fate, and I've never forgotten this. It's a very sobering thought. If we do not repent for our sins on earth, we will pay the price, and we will have chosen our own fate. God is loving and merciful, but if by not repenting we reject that mercy, then because the Lord is also is just, we have in effect chosen His justice which means that we must pay the price in full. Jesus paid the price for our sins but we effectively reject that gift of mercy, and so we choose to get hit with the bill.

We were informed by Bishop Michael Barber of the Oakland Diocese that “the pains of hell” was removed from the Act of Contrition. Has anyone else heard of this? Is it throughout the Church?

I appreciate your hell and damnation that has not been proclaimed since the Nuns preached it in the 60's. Pre Vatican II. Please be sure to include what Christ promised through the sacrament of reconciliation that if you sin ask for forgiveness, do penance and amend your life. God will show mercy.

How exactly would Michael react if he got to heaven, a place in which everyone is supposed to be perfectly happy, only to find out that say his mother or some other loved one isn't there. Could he truly be happy in heaven despite knowing that someone he dearly loved is being tortured ?

When someone tries to tell you that the lost are going to be tortured forever, you can safely ignore them. That is not what the Bible teaches.

Michael, God hates the condemned sinner? And, saints in heaven are going to hate the damned? These are opinions at best.

Michael has a lot of zeal for God however he does not know the Scriptures. Jesus spoke of the Lake of fire, which is the Second death as Revelation teaches. This will happen after the second resurrection followed by the Great White throne judgement, which is also taught in Revelation. Born again Christians, born of the Spirit of God will be resurrected at the coming of Jesus in the First resurrection, this is the resurrection of life, those resurrected here will be immortal since we will have a body like the one Jesus came out with at his resurrection. Those who reject God and continue in their lives of wickedness, will be destroyed in the Lake of fire, this is no everlasting punishment since those that will be thrown in there will not have immortality. We do not have a soul, we have a spirit that returns to God at death. Ecclesiastes 12:7, we actually go to the ground or are burned when we die, however God will give us a new body to our spirit at the resurrection of the dead, we are both together, body and spirit.

I am a cradle catholic and these teachings have marginalized my faith. I cannot comprehend how a so called loving father would create persons carrying a guilt over action they TOOK NO PART IN I do not believe in collective guilt nor do I judge others by any action taken by those they are associated with. My degree was in 20th century european history and at times i knew if I had to stand in judgement of those involved i would to last man standing know i could not assume guilt. Just what I would do give birth and life to another human understood to be hobbled by some remote action they had nothing to do with nor deserve to be assumed to participate in nor did i try to inculcate a conscience or ethics from a fear of God which is defined by absurdity.. my child is not religious but one of the most highly moral and ethical people I have met commented on by headmistress in many private elite schools n NYC including the a psychologist in her own school who told me she had not met her like in her career. Naturally voris and most like him refuse to procreate but have no hesitation to condemn others If we are this awful and he is all powerful time to abort (pardon the term) this failed experiment

Sorry to have to say this but Heaven purgatory & hell are NOT the only destinations. There's a very wide variety of human experience and commensurate afterlife experience. NDE'rs tell a far different story than the traditional church story. NDE's were practically unknown in ancient times. So the church could easily get away with their scary stories.
