Free Shot Rig. A Japanese unique rig you may have never seen.
Free Shot Rig was introduced by a Japanese angler, Genki Fujita, a.k.a. GENKIMAN, back in maybe 2014. He came up with this rig for rockfish fishing specifically for AKOU fishing. AKOU (KIJIHATA) is a family of grouper. Very popular lure fishing target in Japan. I can say that this rig is a kinda hybrid of a Free rig and a Drop shot rig. The weight is placed at the bottom end of the rig just like a Drop shot rig. But the hook is movable.

My grandfather was fishing like this since the 1940"s . He was using a small floating ball (which he made himself ) to stop the hook and keep the line straight and a weight at the end .
@Tbowie13
@Tbowie13 Год назад
We did that for walleye, with the little 💊 floats to keep leaches, worms or minnows off the bottom. This and the free rig before it was called that. We just called it riggin.

Just for reference. I have tried this rig in two ponds twice respectively. About 20 bass have been caught. The average bass weight is 1lb, 1. About 15-20% rate, the 6lb FC line will be broken, that is have never been happen in the past on drop shot, weightless, split shot rigs etc', I will try with 8lb FC lead line again ,2. The miss rate looks like a lit bit higher, I need 30 bass qty to statistic .

Sir,, I am a great fan of your's....the way you explain rigging and the fishing techniques are easy to grasp ...for a novice like me... Please suggest me the knots that would go great with braid to leader on a spinning and bait casting rod.... U always tie a knot....please guide me too

I dreamt up this rig laying in bed trying to sleep one night. I have yet to try it, bit it seems like a great way to get a bait down in places you wouldn't otherwise get to (quietly). My idea didn't use a bobber stop but I couldn't get around how the hook set would work 🤔. Wanted to let the bait fall for at least 6 to 8ft.
@michaeltaylor4394

So I use this technique a lot, especially when working docks from my kayak. Problem I have is that often times the knits I use to tie my sinker weight break off due to the bass pulling the hook to the bottom and doing undo wear on the knot. How do you prevent this? I have lost a lot if good bass to the sinker breaking off and then the hook and bass sliding right iff the line.

i came up with this rig when trying to come up with an adjustable drop shot rig but never thought there is use for it like how you explained also i believe you are suppose to set the rubber stopper much further away to give the bait more time to fall down slowly that is the whole point not the way you set it up so short

Very interesting rig for sure!! Thank you for sharing this video. I have a quick question for you. I’ve never used the Jika rig….what is the advantage over a Texas rig?? When would you use one over the other??!! Pretty much a pegged Texas rig is the same thing, no??!! Thanks Waki!! 👍
@AnglerWaki
@AnglerWaki Год назад
When fishing cover like heavy weed beds from bank, you would see a difference. It's not a huge difference. A bullet weight is still the best weight in terms of stuck-free. It can go through complex covers without being stuck. But it's hard to make it fall vertical because of its shape like Jika does.
@josephhrnciar9376

Thank you for the explanation.I will give it a shot!!

My problem is.. hook abrasion to 6 pound line. That hook is sliding all over fighting a fish putting lots of stress on your main line. Seems after catching a few fish you'd be retying often. Also most drop shot weights under that much pressure would cut into the line and break. Nice technique but catching many fish or an 8 pounder it would break.
@HATINTHEKAT
@HATINTHEKAT Год назад
Good point on the hook abrasion, something to check for after each fish, or try to make sure your hook eyes are smooth, but for the drop shot weight you wouldn’t use the kind where you slide the line in and pull up to wedge it, you’d have to use a round eyed drop shot weight so you can tie a good strong knot to it, obviously since that’s the spot that’s going to take all the stress

too bad you let halibut go that would make very tasty ceviche or whatever
