The expression “to pout"
The expression “to sulk” means to sulk or show one's displeasure in a visible way, often through prolonged silence, a scowl or a closed facial expression. We “pout” when we ostensibly show that we're upset or vexed, usually without openly expressing the reasons for our discontent.
Origin of the expression
The expression derives from the idea that emotions, such as sadness or anger, are often reflected on the face. To “pout” therefore literally means to display your displeasure through your facial expression. This can manifest itself in a frown, pursed lips or a pouty expression, illustrating discomfort or annoyance.
