Borei Keila is Phnom Penh's infamous neighbourhood but residents and food sellers Thavy and Pen Rim cannot imagine living and working anywhere else. The popular dishes at their humble food stalls use wartime ingredients to create economical food. Perfectly-grilled spicy frogs, stuffed frogs with pork, and fermented fish dishes have become beloved dishes of Borei Keila, a haven for the poor.

=====================
About Slumfood Millionaire: Embark on a mouth-watering journey through the slums of Asia, the last places on earth you would expect to find delicious foods. This unique documentary series celebrates the flavourful, and often unknown dishes made by talented cooks in the slums of Manila, Bangkok, Mumbai, Jakarta, Phnom Penh and Kota Kinabalu. Using cheap and overlooked ingredients, they cook up scrumptious dishes that are famous within the slums. Their passion and resilence prove that good food need not be expensive.

Yep.. can’t complain to nobody.. everyone’s in the same boat so we try to maintain each others peace. Unless you piss us off and cross a line you shouldn’t have… then it’s on. Cambodians can be ruthless.. ruthless in how they love and ruthless in how they get angry. Also.. this lady isn’t poor and she isn’t struggling. She’s decked out in gold… we all know what struggling looks like in Cambodia.. she’s not it.

I've seen six of the slumfood millionaire.. so far, I hope CNA produces more.. those dishes in this episode are the most interesting for me. The first frog dish is so amazing and I like that it is so freshly prepared. Hope that someday I can visit Phnom Penh and try them all. Especially the frog. Love, from Indonesia.

I'm Cambodian but no longer reside in the country. What I miss everyday is this exact dish "Grilled Stuffed Frog". This food brings back all the memories as a kid when my family was filled with love. Each time we made it, we always gathered as a family and helped each other out. It's even more time consuming as my family didn't have a blender back then to mix all the ingredients together.

Because it's surrounded by many commercial building, the business there should be better because many workers as well as office workers would roam around in the morning, afternoon as well as the evening. I must admit the electricity is pretty expensive though, it's around USD0.2/kw. It seems she includes all electricity expenses from the stall, the sleeping places and her house upstairs.

Cambodian food is delicious too. Very similar spices used like Thai and Laos food. I can’t wait to get to Cambodia one year and try these frogs. I’ve had them in Vietnam, my family made them for me. They are really tasty for an animal with little meat. The stinky shrimp paste is vey commonly used in Cambodian cuisine. I love it, gives it this pungent taste. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🍆🍆🍆👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

This frog dish is one of few dishes i would eat from these slum videos. It is pure protein and looks delicious. One thing i noticed in all these videos is how clean the food is. Very clean. Even the water in some of these videos used from rivers in India or Vietnam where people bathe, launder, or defecate in, the cooks use lots of salt and scrub the meat and fish to disinfect. In addition, i noticed these cooks take every effort to remove all the blood from the meat. We don’t take these many precautions in the west when preparing meat or fish we have caught ourselves….at least I don’t. Most food in the US is already processed by the time it arrives in the kitchen. Very little of the food in these videos is processed; it is pure and raw and fresh.

As a Cambodian stuffed frogs is one of my favorite dish. I've made with chicken and catfish as well 🌶🔥😋 Never made stuffed frogs living in USA it's hard to find frogs with more meat. Theses ladies I'm sure their dish taste so much better than mine as they're old school chiefs lol. Overall I love all the dish on here. I miss eating Prahok kiet. As a cambodian, this is more war time food but it was popularized under the Cambodian Genocide when many died of starvation. In the past, people would be scared to eat frogs, but during the genocide people did what they had to do. Now, many people eat it, but its more common with lower-income people, but I enjoy it. As a kid i was terrified of it, but when i finally took a bite i realized it just tasted like a stuffed chicken wing. The flavors compliment each other well.

Fun facts about Cambodia before Khmer rouge rise to power: most of the elderly when ask to relocated to America or Europe they would said: "There are no prahok and trei ngeat outside of Cambodia why should they leave their home country" sadly this was the case of my great-great grandfather who didn't comply when my Great grandfather ask him to move to the US so my family stay behind with him and only half actually moved to the US. Note: my great great grandfather was a France teacher; and my Great grandfather was a military general for the Khmer Republic (they were killed by the Khmer rouge around 1976 according to my grandfather)
