THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR REBOOT 

Just what a Fresh Prince reboot needs: heavy handed drama and no comedy. The original was mostly comedy and SOME drama. In fact, that’s what made the drama work. Will was a goof, we laughed with him constantly. He was like a weekly friend you’d watch. Then they hit you with “How come he don’t want me, man?!” and you’re GUTTED. Loved that show.

People are so obsessed with nostalgia and reboots, they'll literally watch anything as long as it's connected to an old show they like. Seriously, a dramatic version of a sitcom with none of the original cast that has nothing to do with the original show. If they didn't share a title, you wouldn't even know they were related. So I don't understand the purpose or the excitement.

It's fascinating that this series was inspired by a fan made trailer. I hope that this dramatic retelling will bring its own material to the table, and not just rehash the original.

My reaction to a Reboot of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: *NO GOD!.....NO GOD, PLEASE NO! NO! NO! NOOOOOOO!!!*

I remember the idea floating around for a reverse Fresh Prince about ten years ago, where Will would be moving his entitlesd rich kid son back to Philly to learn about the streets, with Jaden picking up the mantle as main character. Wild.

I'd rather had seen a one-off special with Will Smith and the original cast returning to celebrate it's 30th anniversary which Will reunites with the Banks at Uncle Phil's funeral and Will and the Banks looking back on their time together and Will finding what each member of the Banks family has done since moving out of the mansion and Will introducing he Banks to his wife and kids (Played by Will's real life family. Wife Jada and kids Willow and Trey).

NOOOO! Not this! This was supposed to be UNTOUCHABLE!

The more serious moments in Fresh Prince had more impact because the rest of the show was a comedy. I just don't see this being any good, most reboots even when you get some of the original people involved in its production still suck. I'm gonna pass on that one,.

I dunno, I think instead of a reboot it should of been a continuation like Cobra Kai. It's because nobody can replace James Evans, nobody can replace Jack Tripper, or Seinfield, JJ Evans, George Jefferson, Red Foxx, Danny Tanner, Especially Uncle Phil.. I think instead of replacing Uncle Phil they should of had it where the Story starts out with the cast plus 10 new characters in suits and dresses, are paying their respects to Uncle Phil at his grave. Aunt Viv is now a Grandmother as well as Wills mother. Will, Carlton, Hilary, and Ashley all have Children and everyone goes back to Aunt Vivs new house in Bel Air and the show goes from there. I mean maybe the show might work, but what reboot has anyone really raved about and told everyone they had to watch it bc it was such an amazing show? I can't name one. Maybe this will be the first

A darker "Fresh Prince?" Nah. You cant replace the original. I wont be watching. I love my memories of Will, Unca Phil, Carlton, Aunt Viv. Their personalities are too ingrained in my brain. I missed the Will's dad episode when it aired. I watched it here on youtube and I was devastated. Absolutely fine acting, but emotionally it hit me like a ton of bricks. Too close to my actual life.

I shared that fan made trailer when it was done also. The fact they and will are working together on this has me excited

My main thing is they're either gonna follow along with the original stories plots and make them excessively more dramatic, or make completely original stories which at that point why didn't you just make something completely original instead of relying on a popular IP as a crutch.

I suppose there could be potential to touch on racy subjects through the lens of the fresh prince story which is pretty unique. You’re right it is better than just trying to make it funny and the same style of humor like all the current reboots/sequel series

Bel Air being made a drama of Fresh Prince wouldn't be the reason it fails, not having Will Smith attached to it would be.

Sorry I disagree. If they wanted to milk the franchise, just make a sequel for it. If the cast is willing to return, have them reunite after Uncle Phil's passing and show us how they are coping with him gone. You can have comedy and drama but with the actual characters you know and love. What's this going to accomplish? The dramatic moments in the original were impactful because they came out of nowhere in a very light hearted show. It made the messages it wanted to show way more memorable and hard hitting.

I like what they did with Geoffrey, because it's almost exactly what they did with Alfred Pennyworth, canon-wise. From comic relief to retconned badass. And they're both butlers, which isn't even the point I was making, just a bonus coincidence.

I haven't watched this yet, but I remember seeing the RU-vid video and absolutely loving what they did to change things up. I just have too much stuff on my list to watch right now.

First time I realized everyone else loved the Fresh Prince, was when the smartest girl in my 3rd grade class starting singing the theme, & every other kid in the class finished it with her. 😆

Anyone commenting that this show looks good, I have to ask: Would you still be interested if it wasn't being sold under the Fresh Prince banner? Or are you just gullible enough to buy anything as long as the label looks familiar?

When I was first getting into the show, I noticed how the first episode ended. It ends with Will and Phil learning more about each other. Phil's past activism and Will's interest in classical music. Showing that there is a deeper connection between the 2 that will be developed in the future. I didnt feel like too much in the show fully realized this story development. Yeah we had the episode where Will's dad walked out and other episodes where Will and his family realize there's more to each character, but I dont know if it feels as earned. Almost every episode is basically the same thing; will gets in trouble, makes short and fat jokes, Phil yells or gets angry. I get that its a comedy, but I enjoy when you can get good drama from a comedy show and I love to see it sprinkled out more often than a few really good dramatic episodes. I enjoy Boy Meets World because they did that so often and would get me way more invested in the following episodes and what would happen next. Thats what the pilot of Fresh Prince did for me and I wish we had more of that throughout the show.

I remember seeing episode 1 on YTV either midnight or early in the morning, I loved it. Even when reruns played I wanted to run home from school to see them.

I'm willing to see how this dramatic version of 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' will become. I can understand why fans of the OG series don't care for it since it seems like the show is going full right on the drama w/ little to no comedy.

I really like that it was made by a fan and Will Smith I think that might work.

(comment before viewing video) The fan made trailer was great, I would have actually watched that. But this new teaser for the real thing turned me off. Will was into basketball for like 4 episodes of 1 season when he was at Bel Air Prep. If they try to do the "I'm gonna become an NBA player" thing, I'm out. Fresh Prince used to be an example of "We don't have to just be athletes and rappers to make it". Vivian was a professor, Phil a Attorney / Judge later. I dunno man, I hope this video makes me more optimistic.

I would need a completely different set of reasons to watch this reboot than the original...I watched Fresh Prince for its giant heart and good time...this reboot show looks like a total bummer, that doesn't tranfer over well at all

As long as it pays tribute to the original series in someway and honors Uncle Phil’s actor in a way, then I’m okay with this upcoming revival.

I never really understood why people get angry at reboots when your favorite original is probably streaming somewhere. You can ignore the reboot and watch the OG's until the end of time if you want.

This sounds like a generic drama, maybe to exploit racial tensions, that somehow got its hands on the name of a good show to give it a tiny chance of succeeding.

This will go over as well as the Wonder Years reboot. (I bet a majority of you didn't realize Wonder Years was rebooted). No one wants dramatic reboots of old sitcoms.

I kinda want the original cast to cameo as teachers and etc. I think that will be a great call back to the original. Meta conversations from Will as someone else to the new Will about his actions will be legit, hell Will can as Uncle Phil, hell legit looks like him now in some pictures or just have him as some random teacher or something. They gotta have the Carlton dance remixed into a current type dance or just the original, Hilary has to be fine and bratty, Ashley has to be too cool for school, Aunt Viv has to be nurturing, Geoffrey has to be an asshole who deep deep deep really mean well, but still the foil to Will and the other kids and Uncle Phil though stern is the glue that holds the family together, RIP James Avery. It has to have the heart of the original series, plus even it will be a drama, have plenty of comedic segments, but not too much that throw off the tone they are trying to convey. I love the original series seeing that I watched a good percentageof it when originally premiered, it holds a dear part of my heart, that being said this should be esp with Will as an integral part of the creative process, it should good if not the show of the year like the original.

I don't know. I don't think I'll dig this reimagining but maybe it should exist. Maybe there were alot of people who watched the original and have wanted to see these characters taken more seriously for decades. If thats the case then yeah, sure, do it. I was mocked for seeing the gravitas in comics and now that they're taken seriously (sometimes, it DOES happen), I love it...and you're absolutely right to think I'm a manchild and those productions are artistically barren, so long as you shut up and let me enjoy the realization of my fantasies. And I'll do the same for the fans of this. My only beef is...why Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? I mean...this is practially a new idea just by virtue of the change in tone. So why can't it just be its own thing? Why does P.CockCorp really believe that slapping the name of something they already own on it is gonna get more eyeballs? And yeah I head Big Willie's all in it, but still.

Loved Fresh Prince. But I have no interest in this but it can’t be as bad as the weird new Saved By the Bell which is a sequel but also feels like a spoof of the original.

I probably won't watch this for one I don't have peacock, 2 I'm not really interested in Drama's.

Ah yes, black people and police in 2021, I do wonder what they can tell what any other TV show didnt tell us for the last 2-3 years. O wait, I already have Blackish for it. And their other show Grownish. And if I want to see horendous reboot I can watch "Saved By The Bell". Its probably the same story as this, only more white people there. What I am trying to say is that some things are better left undone. I really dont care about XYZ literation of the same story told. "Fresh Prince" was good because they were subtle with their moments and focused on being sitcom. This would be full on as any other show today with heavy politics involved. Ah yes, forgot "Falcon and The Winter Soldier". Would this say some other story that show didnt told me only without superheroes? I really cant see the reason to watch this at all.

I don’t hate the idea of this “re-imagining” I give them credit for trying something different. I’m going to give it a watch but I don’t see why it’s being made. Every piece of art has to justify its existence especially a remake. And I don’t think this is all that necessary.

I think that bringing up Riverdale hurt you’re argument. If you’re trying to defend something, bringing up the CW won’t help.

Reboots of really popular shows are in a no win scenario. This isn’t like Roseanne or Fuller House. This is a complete reboot/remake with an entirely different cast and crew. I just don’t see how this is going to succeed when people aren’t going to accept it for what it is and also for what it isn’t. I think it would’ve been a much more viable decision if they tried to go the Fuller House route and continue the original story in some way.

i am not a fan of reboots but i may give this one a chance since they are going in a different direction than the original i am glad they are doing something different since most reboots just try to do the same thing the original did and fail miserably.

This is gonna be good because they know the show was following the hip hop culture at the time at least the 1st two to three seasons but what happened in 1993 Snoop Dogg came out with doggystyle Wu Tang Came out Deathrow Then Biggie Nas Mobb deep Big L all that so the more serious Gangsta tone rap had didn't work for the fresh prince so they used lighter hip hip elements and TV was generally lighter and happier baxk them but now everything is all dark and serious it's fitting into it know and it can feed off this soulless dark Rap culture where you're either flexing you're wealth a scammer or Doing Drill and smoking on dead people people just want the world to be 1991 again there not mad at the fresh prince reboot

It's better that they're doing a reboot rather than a continuation IMO, a nice it wouldn't change the lives of the original characters in any way, but I would prefer it if they weren't using the same character names and dynamics as the original. Also, I feel like it would've been better if it were more like a continuation in the same world overall, but with new characters and none of the original main cast in the major roles. Like, maybe have some of the original characters guest star a couple times per season at most. Maybe even flip the fish out of water concept front he original so that a privileged kid from Bel-Air ends up moving in with his extended family in the neighborhood that Will lived in before moving to Bel-Air in the original series.

I’m getting tired of people rebooting shows or movies just leave the show or movie alone it doesn’t need a reboot and if you’re going to reboot a movie or show that’s good or bad what I say go make your own show or movie leave it alone so what I say stick with the classic because they got it right the first time

I have seen the fan made trailer and the video response from will to it and how he thought it could work as an actual series but there needs to be an audience for that I think isn’t really there that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea by any means it’s like how the saved by the bell bell revival failed to understand what made the original good to people even though saved by the bell did change genres like bel-air will but the characters still have to be compelling to keep people watching I’m still hopeful for it cause I love the original and love it’s on hbo max

I think it'll be good if it can stick consistency and stay true to what it's being. Rather than buckle under pressure or lose it's way midway through. See Riverdale had the right idea but only for Season 1. I just hope this doesn't end up like /that/ and can pull off what it wants to be without losing steam after 1 season or earlier. I think if it's going to re-tell a lot of the themes from the original in this day an age it has to be done in a dark tone and via a drama genre. When tensions are high and they're at the forefront you couldn't make a comedy that does them without insulting people and getting an uproar of hatred. The 90's and early 2000's were different. I'll give it a watch if it stay true to it's version of events and has some good writing.

There was potential for a legitimate prequel series on his days before he came to Bel-Air but it should have been a comedy. I'm not interested in a drama that feels like it's set in modern day.

I am sure nothing will ever top the original because of the amazing actors and their chemistry but this is cool because it started with just a concept trailer. I don't expect Carlton or Uncle Phil to be half as cool as they were in the original. Of course, Will won't be even close, but I look forward to this new rendition nevertheless.

I think peacock doesn't realize that fresh prince is based off of a real person's life and that person is not will smith its benny madina. This show was never about will he was just the actor so why is will making it and not the man who's life it's based. Especially since benny madina is literally a tv producer in real life

Why not just make an original show, with similar plot threads rather than standing on the shoulders of someone else's hard work and sacrifice? Standing on someone else's hard work and the fans with it, to elevate one's own product doesn't make them bold, nor creative. It makes them a parasitic entity, placing product over Art, and profit of nostalgia over fans.
