Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe’s deep admiration for legendary singer Ella Fitzgerald led to an incomparable friendship between the two women.
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

The more I read about Marilyn Monroe, the more I realise what an amazing woman is being labeled in history as nothing more than a sex doll.
@TheBeastBandit

The fate of most gorgeous women in history. They’re either sexual objects that only contributed to history through their sexual exploits or sexual deviants that caused the downfall of empires and great men, blah blah blah. Monroe was an amazing woman.
@ta21l

Golden Age Hollywood stars are so heavily groomed that they end up not being themselves but a product. Monroe and Judy were extreme tragic cases. Monroe was more than a sex symbol and Judy was more than a belter (singer who can belt out high notes for a long periods of times). Gay/ Bi and black entertainers suffered greatly as well, creating false narratives to appeal to a white conservative audience.

Bruh. True. When I was a teenager my friend was in love with Marilyn Monroe, and I was like "literally all she did was make a poor outfit choice during windy weather one time" But now I'm researching more about her coz she sounds sooooo much more interesting and complex than she's made out to be

1st time ever I'm crying watching "Drunk History"... The untold part of the story is the fact, that despite being eventually allowed to perform at Mocambo, Ella as a black person still couldn't use the main door of the club as they were only for the white. So Marylin showed up every day a bit earlier to walk Ella through the main entrance. MM did more for black people at that time than any other privileged white person in the USA and that was probably the best role she ever played.

Alright for sisters, and lady power to the max!! Marilyn helped Ella through the door, but Ella made it work! Marilyn clearly knew that the segregation was BS, and didn’t go around trying to say “Oh, if it weren’t for me, Ella would be a nobody.” She sat down and let Ella shine. And that’s all it takes sometimes is to hold the damn door open for someone. That’s all it takes. Not trying to be a “savior”, just helping out a friend. And Ella told the world that there was more to this beautiful icon y’all done murdered than you ever thought!! (I’ve always loved this story too as Ella and MM have always been personal heroes. I think you’re viewing an old-world problem from a new-world lens. Marilyn was brave. It’s obvious in those times that black people weren’t as accepted, but did you know white people were usually scrutinized and outcasted for helping them. So they say brave because Marilyn risked her celebrity to help a friend. A friend that wasn’t socially acceptable for her to have in those times. She was ahead of her time and both women are amazing in their own right. Love me some Ella!
@rubyy.7374
@rubyy.7374 8 месяцев назад
I think “strong”, “resilient”, or a whole slew of other positive terms would be better ways to describe Ella, but calling her “brave” for something like that ignores the nuances of being marginalized. Being brave is more something that you elect to be, but for someone like Ella, especially at that time, it was about survival. You’ll do a lot of things if you don’t have the luxury of an escape plan. A comment I read put it best, asking, “Is it brave to run away from a pack of wolves out to get you?” It takes so much to keep running, but it's separate from simply being “brave.” Now Marilyn, she actively chose to support Ella when she had nothing to gain but much to lose, and she did it anyway. *That’s* bravery. As for who’s better? It’s comparing apples and oranges: a complete waste of time. These two incredible women used their lots in life to make a difference where they could, and they both deserve immense respect for that.

@@SamAsm367 In Etta James' autobiography (which is fantastic by the way) she tells a story of how she had to tell a cop that she was a black woman because they thought she was white. So perhaps Gabby is not the right choice for Ms. James. They already had Beyonce play her in Cadillac Records.

Why was Ella’s 1st dress so ill fitting though? What costume designer let that slide. They need to hire people who specialize in plus size women -.-

It's because the time era it's set for. Things were still segregated and black citizens didnt have easy access to the same comforts white citizens had, including access to nicer fabrics at an affordable price. Theres designers for bigger women now, but there really wasnt back then.

Ella knew how to dress well. There were more seamstresses in that time that could make custom dresses. They didn't have to buy from fancy boutiques

Ella looked NOTHING like this. She was several shades lighter and really beautiful and elegant. Don't get me wrong, Gabby is a good actress, but don't throw ANY black woman in there to play Ella. Ella's beauty, elegance, and perfect voice was applauded by Frank Sinatra and EVERYONE in the business. I'm offended. Once again, white people not respecting the look of a black person. So many famous black actresses or not so famous but looked somewhat similar could've been cast as Ella.

@@elliesings9508 oof the colorism in this comment. Gabby is a great actress and shouldn't be discriminated against for her skin color! Almost the entire Hamilton cast was casted in a historically inaccurate way, but it's still a masterpiece, and that was sort of the point. In 2020 I don't think trivial things like appearance matter for portraying the heart of a historical figure anymore. You might as well be mad about the little mermaid being black if that's a priority for you.

So Hugh Hefner confirmed that Marilyn was bisexual. Some people believe that she had more than a friendship with Ella while others hate the idea that they may have been in a relationship. But I think we can all agree that they were close and truly loved each other.
