I cried when putting together this video. The friendship between Pope Saint John Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI always struck me as very special . . . and that sense only grew while working on the tribute.
Pope Benedict knew that Pope John Paul II would be a saint when he was still alive. To watch the serene yet emotional expression on his face during the canonization homily is truly something to behold. What a feeling it must be, I cannot imagine, to have your dear friend declared a saint . . .
"This death had intensely moved me, naturally, because we were very close. He was a decisive character for me . . . And of course you grieve deeply, when someone close departs. At the same time, I had the awareness that he is there. That he blesses us from his window in heaven, as I then said on St. Peter’s Square too. That wasn’t just words. That genuinely came from an inward awareness that even today he sends blessings down, that he is there and that the friendship endures in a different way."
From LAST TESTAMENT: IN HIS OWN WORDS (Pope Benedict was interviewed here by Peter Seewald about the funeral Mass of Pope John Paul II.)
I love you both so much. And I love your friendship. ❤ Thank you for showing us the path of Christ.
