There were only two Mountain troop divisions raised in Bavaria, the 1st and the 8th, but the 8th was only raised in February 1945. All other Mountain Troop Divisions of the Wehrmacht were not from Bavaria, the majority were raised in Austria. 02:28 The symbol of the Mountain Troops, the Edelweiß flower badge, can be seen here on the sleeve of the Major. 03:08 This footage, showing Soviet soldiers, was usually taken from captured enemy material, a practice that was common for German training and propaganda films. 04:03 Transmitting orders via bike courier was a common practice among all nations during WWII, if radio communications could not be established quickly enough. 04:35 This is a 7,5cm leiG 18, the standard German infantry gun of WWII. Roughly 12,000 made between 1932 and 1945. The wooden wheels indicate that this is a pre-war gun, as guns made during WWII had metal wheels and rubber tires. 05:15 This is a 5cm PaK 38. Produced from April 1940 onwards, it was one of the few AT-guns the Germans had during Operation Barbarossa, that could penetrate Soviet T-34 and KV-1 tanks. 9,568 guns were made until mid-1944. Despite the 7,5cm PaK 40 being made in larger numbers from late 1941 onwards, the 5cm PaK 38 remained in service until the end of the war, as the Germans had a massive shortage of AT-guns. 05:17 This is a Soviet 45mm 53-K AT-gun. Introduced in 1937, it was produced until 1943, and 37,350 guns were made. It could easily penetrate most German tanks at the beginning of the war. Captured examples were often used by the Germans, as shown here. 05:49This is a sIG 33, a 150mm infantry support gun, the main heavy infantry gun of the Germans during WWII. Around 4,600 made between 1936 and 1945. With a weight of 1,8 tons, the sIG 33 was heavy and difficult to move, but it had great firepower. 06:36 This gun is a 7,5cm Mountain Gun 36, the standard artillery piece of German mountain troops during WWII. 1,193 guns built between 1938 and 1944. As it was intended to be used in difficult terrain, it had a weight of only 750 kilos, and could be transported by mules. 07:13 This is a 10.5 cm leFH 18, the standard German light field gun of WWII. 11,848 produced between 1935 and 1943, with a further 10,265 produced of its successor, the 10.5cm leFH 18/40, from 1943-1945. The fact that this gun here has no muzzle break indicates that it is an early war model. 07:25 On this cart, the unit insignia of the Mountain troops, a white Edelweiß flower, can be seen. 07:50 This is a sFH 18, a 15cm heavy artillery gun, which was the main heavy artillery piece of the Wehrmacht during WWII. 6,756 made between 1933 and 1945. 10:19 This is a heavy KV-1 tank. Development started in February 1938 and serial production in January 1940, and 3,159 tanks were made until the end of 1942. The KV-1 had up to 90mm of armor, and this tank caused the Germans the most trouble during the initial stages of Operation Barbarossa, as most German tanks and AT-guns could not penetrate the KV-1, and only the 8,8cm AA-guns or aerial attacks were able to destroy them. 10:28 These are T-34 medium tanks. Built from September 1940 onwards, it combined decent firepower, good mobility and good, sloped armor. Just like the KV-1, the T-34 was also problematic for the Germans, as most guns were unable to penetrate it in the early stages of Barbarossa. 10:40 This is a 3,7cm PaK 36 AT-gun. Around 20,000 guns were made between 1936 and 1943, it was the most built German AT-gun. While it was a decent gun in the mid-1930s, by the start of WWII, it was outdated and could only penetrate light enemy tanks, certainly not T-34s or KV-1s. 11:20 While in theory, the turret ring was indeed a weak point of the T-34, AT-guns back then were not accurate enough to aim for such small places, and would instead usually aim at large surfaces, to increase the chance of a hit. 12:50 Laying and replacing wires was essential for any situation, as it allowed for radio communication. 13:09 This is an early StuG III variant. Equipped with a short-barreled 7,5-cm-StuK 37 gun for infantry support. All variants before the Ausf. F had these, and around 820 StuG III (Ausf. A until E) were made with the short-barreled gun. 13:56 This is a Soviet 76mm regimental gun M1927, a Soviet infantry support gun. Designed in 1927 and produced between 1928 and 1943, 18,116 were made. 14:29 This is a light 2cm FlaK 38 AA-gun. As shown here, these light AA-guns were often used against ground targets. 15:06 This is an Sd. Kfz. 250/6, an APC used by the Germans during WWII. A smaller variant of the Sd. Kfz. 251, the 251 was used for a variety of tasks, mainly communications and reconnaissance. However, the variant shown here is the 250/6 variant, used as an ammunition carrier for assault guns. In total, 6,628 Sd. Kfz. 250 were built between 1941 and 1945. 18:18 This is again a 3,7cm PaK 36. 18:28 This truck is equipped with two MG-34 in an AA-configuration, turning it into an improvised AA-truck. 18:32 This is a Soviet Petlyakov Pe-2 twin engine aircraft. Originally designed as a dive bomber, it was also used as a heavy/night fighter plane, and for reconnaissance. It was the most important Soviet bomber aircraft, and generally considered one of the best tactical attack aircrafts of WWII. 11,070 planes were made between December 1940 and December 1945. 19:03 This burning scout car is a Ba-10. Designed on the chassis of a GAZ-AAA truck, it was equipped with a 45mm gun in a turret, giving it even some anti-tank capabilities. Introduced with the Red Army in 1938, 3,311 vehicles were built, although the majority were lost in the first few months of the war with Germany. Some captured vehicles were also used by Germans and Finnish troops, and the vehicle was generally considered very effective by all sides. 19:17 These two tanks are BT-5 light tanks. Armed with a 45mm gun, it was only lightly armored with up to 23mm armor. 1,884 BT-5s were made between 1933 and 1940. Like most other Soviet light tanks, many of these were destroyed in the first few months of Operation Barbarossa. 21:00 This is again a Ba-10 scout car. 22:15 This is again a leIG 18. Interestingly, this example has the protective shield removed. 25:48 Using flags as a symbol for pilots to indicate the location of own units was a common practice on the Eastern Front, during the initial stages of Operation Barbarossa. 27:15 This is most likely Hubert Lanz (1896-1982), the commander of the 1st Mountain Troop Division at that time. He joined the German Army in June 1914 as a cadet, and was heavily wounded in WWI. He continued serving in the Army, being promoted to Captain in 1928 and later becoming staff officer. In November 1938, he took over command of the Mountain Troop Regiment 100, and in October 1940, he became commander of the 1st Mountain Troop Division. He led this division in the Balkan campaigns and Operation Barbarossa, where he was responsible for the anti-semitic pogroms in Lviv. He later led his troops in Greece, where he was responsible for the execution of thousands of Italian POWs, and reprisal actions against Greek civilians. In 1947, he was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for war crimes at the Hostage Trial in Nuremberg, but was released already in 1951. He then joined the FDP and served as their military advisor.

The one thing that always gets me watching these is the fact that when you think Nazi soldiers you have something very particular in mind but when you see footage from the front you realize the average German infantry man is just like any other average infantry man from any age, place, or army. Just dudes, most of them young, all of them annoyed.

My man, you need to sell the idea of this channel in a better way. In nowhere the description or title says this footage is FULL HD! Besides the fantastic work on the subs this alone should make this channel mega popular. Spam HD everywhere in the videos. Also subs. Take care and hope you do well!

That's because the footage isn't Full HD😅 It's rendered in Full HD, but the original film was only digitalized to 720p. I do write Full HD in the title when the original film was digitalized to 1080p, this one just wasn't, and I don't want to clickbait people :) I do have a playlist containing all my Full HD uploads; this video isnt on there because well, it isnt Full HD.

Thanks a million times for the amazing content. My folks grew up in occupied Luxembourg. My grandfather was drafted and I have known quite a few of our boys that were forcibly recruited by the germans. So it's definitely a big yet sad part of our history. 7:47. I am just wondering if there are any training films of small arms maintenance available.
