A battle of the titans for Fujifilm's Best Telephoto lens when shooting a little bit of wildlife photography, The Fujifilm XF 70-300mm VS the Fujifilm XF 100-400mm. As large and awkward as the Fuji XF 100-400mm is for travel and landscape photography, it has to be said that it produces some damn nice images that can not be matched by the XF 70-300mm.
However, the Fuji XF 70-300mm can achieve nice results when shooting wildlife photography, and for the 10% that I will use it for capturing wildlife is it even worth having the large tank of lens with me? Let me know in the comments below guys what you think, and why?

I have both the 100-400mm and the recently the 70-300mm. I've used both on the X-H1 and X-T4 and agree totally with your summary. However, I recently purchased the X-H2. I've found the x1.4 and x2.0 Digital- Teleconverter feature to be excellent with the 70-300mm. I know it is simply a crop, but with the 40 megapixel sensor on the X-H2 and X-T5 you have plenty of latitude to accept the crop. And because it is a crop rather than optical zoom, you don't lose aperture width. Effectively with the x2.0 magnification and the 70-300mm you have a decent 140-600mm 20 megapixel lens. For the odd occasion long range shooter it is a great option. I'm still going to trade my XF100-400m for the XF150-600 when I can raise the cash and dupe the wife, but whilst using the 70-300mm and an unexpected long range opportunity comes up.... I'll go digital-teleconverter and with 40 megapixels suffer the crop without significant IQ issues

Hay Matt, lovely video and, having both of these lenses myself, I can quite understand the dilemma. In fact, I was researching my own video on Fuji zooms when I stumbled across this. I had a bit of an injury about a year ago and developed tendonitis in my left wrist. I could no longer handle the 100-400mm lens, so I ordered the 70-300mm and I'm absolutely thrilled with it... But there are still a few tests I want to do (hence working on a video). I want to show an image at 300mm and the same one at 400mm. I want to compare adding the 1.4x TC and I want to take a look at pot-cropping and upscaling to get the final composition... Because if I can't hold the 100-400mm, I need some workaround... Which, of course, will all be situational. I LOVED the 100-400mm lens when I first got it. I was a bit of a dream to have a wildlife lens and thought it would stay in my kit forever... Sadly, I am looking to sell what is a virtually new lens... However, that 70-300mm is INCREDIBLE. I've noticed pin-sharp images, even if you have to crop in a little further. Out in the field (and I've not had the chance to get out as much as I would have liked), I'm no longer missing the extra 100mm and, of course, if there is enough light, I can use the TC. I've only recently made a 'first look' video with the 70-300mm (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ECffUDWqg2w.html), but the image quality has blown my mind. This is one of those instances where you have two impeccable lenses to choose from. I don't think anybody would be displeased with either choice, even if you have to make some compromises (reach or weight).

Nice one Matt. As an owner of 100-400 I can agree that it well deserves its Red Badge Status. The image quality from it is outstanding in my opinion. 📷😎👍.

I have the 100-400 and pair it with an X-H1. The handgrip of the X-H series works so well with such a heavy lens. I must admit to feeling of dread seeing you walk with the 100-400 without a strap! Paired with a Black Magic using the tripod mount as the attachment point lessens my arm strain considerably.

I agree with you there is some magic in the 100-400 that helps isolate the subject and make birds pop in the frame

I hope to get a nice zoom for sports at some point. Right now, they aren't in my budget. I'm going to start by using my XF90mm and see how it goes. I'm only shooting youth sports, so it's not like I'll be miles away from the action. BTW, I just got the 90 recently. Good fortune because so many pros are moving up to the new bodies and lenses now. I am addicted to that lens along with the XF56, also the result of a pro moving up to the new lens. Have so much fun with both of them!! Love seeing the footage in this video. Beautiful trees!!

Love the 90 so much and I just got the new 56 recently too. Been eying the 50-140 for sports and indoor events but would rather just get a new 40mp body and crop the 90 if need be and have the double primes for low light

@@b3arodactyl Cool! That new 56 looks great. I have the V1.0, new one is too expensive for now. I hope I can move up to the bigger sensor at some point. For now, the XT-3 is doing a great job. Man, that 50-140 is one I'd love. Maybe if I start doing some paid jobs after retiring in June I'll be able to look for one.

Hi Matt, another top vlog. If you want to get rid of the 100-400mm lens, get yourself a 1.4x teleconverter and put it on the back of the 70-300mm. This is a least expensive alternative, lightweight and takes up no room in your camera bag. Images great, particularly like the pair of Adelaide Rosellas more than the Kookaburra shot. Some opportunity for woodland photography where you were too, some pretty awesome redgums there.

I totally agree that's the decision I made based on cost, weight, and frequency of use. Although I am thinking about the tamron 150-500mm, which I think also works with the 1.4× 🤔
@dillcarver7731
@dillcarver7731 Год назад
Or, with the X-H2 or X-T5 body, use the Digital-Teleconverter feature x1.4 or x2.0. I know it is a crop, but on a 40 megapixel sensor it is fine for most and because it is purely a crop, no loss of aperture width even when shooting the 70-300mm at 600mm focal length,

I went with the 70-300 for hiking / all day shooting and the Tamron 150-500 for vehicle / birding / shorter walks. Both produce great images and work well in respective situations.

For me geagraphical location was the limiting factor and that's why I got the 70-300 as the next best thing. 100-400 is heavy bulky and not possible to carry while travelling at least for me now unless I gather a ton of experience under my belt to go through the hassles. Till then 70-300 is a friendly telephoto but yeah I would miss the subject separation you spoke about.

I wanted to buy a long zoom lens for my X-E3 camera and thought that the 70-300mm would be good for photographing eclipses and wildlife. At the camera shop there was a new 70-300mm and a used 100-400mm for a £100 or so more. On trying out the 100-400mm in the shop, I realised that it would be too heavy for me so I bought the 70-300mm. The lens is compact, light and very practical. From my house I can walk to a (Victorian) castle about a mile away, photograph the wildlife then walk home and not notice the weight. Tomorrow I should be buying the 1.4X teleconverter for it.

I use the 70-300 mostly for landscape images. On the few occasions I shoot wildlife, I use the 1.4 tele converter, and that works great. As others have said, it makes the lens a perfect lighter weight alternative to the 100-400, with almost as good IQ.
@rachel.isabelle
@rachel.isabelle Год назад
I heard tele converters ruin the quality, have you found that? or is it too small to notice?
@BobP622
@BobP622 Год назад
@@rachel.isabelle the 1.4 definitely does not ruin the image. Can’t speak for the 2.0, but I read it softens the image a bit. I upgraded to the XT5, and I can crop in, so probably don’t need to use the 2.0. I also have a 1.4 for my Nikon system, and it’s fine also on a Z7 zoom.

I currently have the 100-400 and it is a great lens but recently I have been looking at selling it to get the 70-300 as a replacement? My reson? Size. My wife and I recently had a child and the 100-400 is simply too big to carry around. The 70-300 takes up that much less in space that I could probably fit it in the old nappy bag haha. I don't think I would be losing out too much at the long end, I'm in New Zealand and this birds here that I photograph are overall not greatly shy of humans and are fairly easy to get close to.

The Fuji 1.4 converter is very good when attached to the 100-400mm results are excellent. So this is a much better combo then the 150-600mm…..save in bulk and more flexibility.

Excellent video, thanks! On an A7IV currently and considering Fuji as an eco system for my entire Fam. We have 6 kids who all use the now non-existent FinePix bridge cameras and with the X-H2, I finally have a body with the rez I would need. Looking to buy a couple used XT-3 or 4 bodies for their 1st interchangeable lens cameras and the 70-300 seemed like the perfect lens. Looking at the 1.4 TC for my needs. Appreciated everyone’s comments also, didn’t know of the digital TC function on the X-H2, cool option! Would appreciate any lens suggestions. Sub’d!

How do you get the x-t4 to nail focus with the 70-300? I was so disappointed it seemed to have some sort of ios/ibis conflict. I thought it might be a duff zoom but on the X-t5 fantastic. Just took a handheld shot of the late autumn moon and at 200% crop it was the best moon shot I have ever taken even compared to a 300mm Ai Nikkor. I must try the digital 1.4x & 2x crop feature and work out how to get the best from that as mentioned in one of your other responders. If you invest in the latest bodies you will be encouraged by the rise in quality of the whole process. The 40mp is great for cropping but does improve in sharpness with the 26mp x-t4 not massively but nicely. However Matthew like yourself I also love the X-t1 & 2 and I feel they are better with their overall image than the X-t3 & x-t4 allbeit much slower. Now wait for the response from these views of a photographer using Pentax, Olympus, Nikon full frame through just about every version of the Fuji system for over 50 years.😅

Great comparison Matt, it is the 70 300 for me. I know the story behind how you got the 100 400 so I think you should never sell it, just keep it in the the van under the seat ! I have just sold my xt3 and bought xh2 . Just got home with it so about to charge the battery. The reason I didn't get the xt5 was because I got the xh2 considerably cheaper than xt5. Getting back to lenses, my travel kit is 70 300, 16 55 and Viltrox 13 1.4 and of course xh2. With 40 megapixels I should be able to crop pretty hard with 70 300 if I need to. This will be my travel kit to Zermatt, Tromso and Lofoton next year.
