I recently bought my first ev, a 2021 Ford Mach e premium awd long range. I only cost me $30k out the door with just 22k miles. This was cheaper than any comparable ice vehicle I found. In 4000 miles of driving, I have never had to use public charging, but sometimes do just to patronize the business model to show demand. I needed to have some pie and coffee anyway, lol. The worst range I have seen is 180 miles, when it was 5 degrees, and I didn't prewarm the car. When it is warm I get at least 250 miles range. I am putting in solar to direct charge. I can't see going back to ICE. Saving money every day, and easily the most fun to drive car I've had in my 54 years of driving. It's funny the negative comments I get, but mostly I get lots of questions from curious people. I live in a remote town of 800 people, there are very few EVs here, most people are curious, so I take a moment to try and be a good embasador. I did get a spare wheel though. A flat with no spare was my biggest negative of the car.

Hi Robert: A quick tip for you when driving your Tesla; Spend a little time investigating the voice commands. One that I use all the time in our Teslas (Model 3 Highland and Model X Long Range) is I‘M HOT or I‘M COLD. These change the aircon by 1.5C down or up… Also easy com mands for heated seats and steering wheel (eg: MY HANDS ARE COLD)…. It is a very unusual day when I need to touch the screen whilst on the move…

The BYD plan is to take on Ford and Toyota with their own hybrid models to become an established brand and to take some market share whilst in a few years offering an electric equivalent model option. It's all about becoming an established brand that can then at some point flick the switch and phase out hybrids and make solely pure electric vehicles.

At the moment Toyota is killing it with their hybrids in Oz and NZ gov slapped a 7.6c/km road user charge on BEVs and ~ 5c on PHEV and nothing on Toyota hybrids. My guess is BYD said "If that's how you want to play ,we can do that as well" Same with factories in Mexico when US put tarifs on Chinese stuff.

All the videos of this quality that I watch on this channel, and especially this one warning us of the coming tsunami of Chinese EVs, make me extremely worried for French and European brands. Here, we criticise the state's support for Chinese cars, but we pretend not to see their quality, their abundance, their inventiveness and their speed of implementation. In France, we were still marvelling recently at the small groove on the rear pillar (my god, what genius!) of the new Renault Symbioz, while the interiors of all the new European models are outdated, their batteries chineese and their recharging lagging behind. I really regret that we don't have a show of this calibre on this side of the Channel.

I'm in Africa and I'm really starting to feel left out. My country makes cars yet we don't see the benefit. If car makers really stop making ICEs after 2035 then the developing world is going to get left behind and it's going to have an enormous economic impact as I'm sure the cost of fossil fuels will skyrocket! It would be great if this podcast could do a show about the EV revolution in developing countries - 2 wheels, instead of 4 - awa as plans for bringing affordable EV cars etc to Africa etc. How are things in S America? Many chinese automakers are looking to open factories in Mexico for the usa market, but could also bring EVs to the S American continent as well. @@timmurphy5541 It depends how SA approaches EV adoption. Ideally owners should charge at home overnight, using private solar. And V2G tech could provide energy storage during peak demand, actually helping reduce loadshedding. ANY EV charging should be via solar anyway - so instead of petrol 1Stops, we could have solar 1stops with coffee shops, fastfood restaurants & maybe some entertainment while customers charge. In the UK you can charge whilst doing a grocery shop. SA will meed to rethink "filling up" and make it fun, accessible (coffee shops with WiFi) & affordable (using solar & battery storage, not the grid which burns gas & diesel and a bit of coal). In many countries EV adoption has actually resulted in reduced electricity demand.

The economists amongst you will recognise the huge oversupply of used cars and consequently understand the financial issues. Battery powered cars will, eventually, be recognised as yet another financial and environmental disaster. People such as Elon will not be remembered with affection. And, on the topic of batteries, those of you who understand such things will know that "powerwalls"/domestic battery storage is now not quite the thing. The fire risk from batteries is now better understood. Why not research BS63100, introduced at the end of March '24. Or search for any of the sparkies' platforms on YT. @tivvy-xf4kz
@tivvy-xf4kz 2 месяца назад
In the early days the hybrid used the battery as a helper to the ice engine and it cut down emissions and gave good mpg. These days the hybrids can run on battery alone and,as he said in the video, app 40 miles. To my mind this is a good thing. It immediately reduces range anxiety so, if you had to commute to your work in the city, You can drive there on the ice engine and if entering a ULEZ zone for example could easily switch over to battery where pollution is usually highest then switch back when leaving the zone Yes I know it doesn't fully cure WORLD pollution but it would help a lot. Also if they were being promoted they would have made a good stepping stone to a full ev when maybe cost has come down and/or battery technology has vastly improved.

At least in the U.S., with typical high public DCFAST charge rates, hybrids cost less to fuel. In Oregon, the average public EV charger rate is $0.43/kWh. The average price per gallon of gasoline is $4.60. A Toyota Prius gets 57 mpg combined. So it would cost $4.60 to travel 57 miles in a Prius. A Tesla Model 3 SR uses ~0.29 kWh/mile. To travel 57 miles at $0.43/kWh would cost 57 miles × 0.29 kWh/mile × $0.43/kWh = $7.11.

I've not really understood why people go hybrid. I get that some see it as a stepping stone towards a proper BEV, but I just see them as not getting away from the expense of running an ICE engine and transmission. I considered the Vauxhall Ampera when I made the leap away from ICE, but I'm glad I went full EV now I look back. This is one of only two cars I can think of that are done properly (in my humble opinion). A hybrid should be an EV first with a back up generator as in the BMW i3 or Ampera.

As a mechanic I saw the writing on the wall for petrol and diesel engines as no more innovations were coming out they had exhausted pardon the pun all ideas on how to make the engine more efficient but one bright spark came up with the hybrid system for a motor to help the engine along under load hence burning less fuel sound good you say well it started off that way but every year the emissions get tighter some companies wrote in cheat codes to give false emissions when tested like VW and many others basically hybrids are a cheat to make the engine run more efficient well not always as a lot of customers find out, Would I buy one Not on your LIFE they are ultra complicated there is so much to go wrong and they often do most times the battery are too small so they don't give enough power to the motor hence poor mpg. The trouble is there are so many mugs who believe all they are told about hybrids instead of doing their own investigating and finding out for themselves what the crack with hybrids now I am not saying they are all bad but there are a lot which fail the mpg test and older people like me are hard nuts to crack for innovation like going electric until I looked into it and 18 months later after owning one I am so glad I took the plunge I have saved hundreds of pound worth of fuel the service took 20 minutes while you wait I hardly drank my cup of complimentary cup of coffee from the dealers and they had washed it as well to boot all they changed was the wiper blades and it was ready for another year or more before the next service the brakes after 11000 miles were 99 per cent I have never had to clean my wheels no brake dust weird as all I did on my ICE cars was clean them once a week as they would be black with dust it cost me 6 pounds seventy-five pence to charge a week instead of thirty quid in petrol need I say more.

It's been reported that the EU and by extension the UK that they are looking at tariffs on Chinese cars. Just when we need cheap cars they will kill that for those who cannot afford the current models available. The assumption is that if the Chinese cars are similar in price prospective buyers will buy the established makers cars. I don't think so they just won't buy one at all because they don't have the money to splash out on an expensive car. If you double the reported Chinese prices especially on the small mini/city type cars they will not be seen as good value. Fair enough but apart from the Citroen Ami (which isn't a car) there are no small car options for those who just want a small runaround?? The result will be the ev target figures will not be met.

The bank then took them over but couldn't sell them, there was a court case that prevented them from doing so. The EC180 charging speed and range was not suitable for a shared&rental cars, but the updated EC3 is a lot better. What I would like is an episode on the cyber cab as soon as we know more about that because I am one of those people who doesn’t want to add more passenger vehicles to the equation and I would rather we build non-ownership mobility up so that we can call on and get to the point where being mobile doesn’t cost so much because everybody needs easy access that is also sustainable for the massive surge we are seeing to greater urbanization. That way, the cost of mobility can come down to match our amount of usage. Because I only use mine to commute to and from work and maybe to do my grocery shop.

You could work from home if your occupation isn't a manual hands on thing. And you can get your groceries delivered if you live in a locale which supports such. A lot of my neighbours have retired and have their groceries delivered. And of course the Amazon man is not a stranger either. With a bit of planning it's not that difficult to go at least a light shade of green.

At present many of these far east models have to many unnecessary gimbbish ( new word) features , or for example 3 different ways to put car into park ? , 4 ways to open the boot ?or 3 ways to start the car? . Totally unnecessary. Instead they are satisfied to sell them with no lumber support , no reclining rear seats , no hatch from boot into cabin . My ones got a American English speaking lady ,so you go into the translation dropdown where there are 3 options to hit , one being english english ( which my kids wanted) , sadly the other 2 options arnt available.

Great podcast, always fantastic to hear from Elliot and Robert. Although I think you forget what a huge Tesla fan base listen to your show. Robert you want to chop in your Model 3 for a BMW? The model 3 will last you another 20 years and get you safely to the shops when you’re not up to driving anymore. BMWs still have a dealer model, still need to be serviced including their brushed electric motors (yes they brought them back from the past to give them something to service). All because you dislike Elon Musk? It can’t be because you don’t like Tesla, BMW’s Neue Klasse is a less aerodynamic model 3 copy with a Tesla badge. Name one person that has done more to better humankind this century? On the one hand you get all worked up over lies from legacy media on climate change as do I. But then believe all the propaganda about Elon Musk. Find out a bit about the guy, read is Auto biography. I think your criticisms are unfounded.

Or how about that the scer network growth the past 24+month's well outpaced overall car production? And tesla knows from their own data the cars charge at home or work 85-95% of the time. Also opening the tesla connector up established nacs as the J3400 standard and anyone can now build tesla compatible chargers! Autonomous robotaxis will need wireless inductive charging as well, guess what the bought out by tesla wiferion co does? And guess what tesla showed off last year as coming soon and Lars has hinted at multiple times? Yup a home inductive charger! Guess what multiple teardowns have confirmed the ct is pre wired for? Yup a wireless inductive charger. It all ads up nicely for those of us with multiple brain cells left to rub together. I love Elons war mode! Buckle up&hold onto your butts people.👍🏻😀

I am a full on EV fan, my car is an EV, my wifes should be , but she wanted a backup so we have a little 600cc range extender in her car but its still driven as an EV 95% of the time............ however until we get an affordable way for people without off street parking to be able to conveniently charge, then hybrids are still going to be an important part of the transition. I agree at this point they should not be needed. But in a UK where public charging can cost upwards of 80p a kwh and you can live miles from public charge points sadly they are. I will never buy another ICE car again, but then I CAN charge at home

Robert, BYD actually is not a start-up in the way that NIO, Xiaomi, Xpeng, and Leapmotor are. Although it was a successful phone battery company, it did get its car making license in the more conventional way, as other legacy automakers did. It purchased a (no account) little state-owned automaker called Qinchuan and began its foray in, by making boring ICE models, such as its Corolla knockoff.

I have yet to see a 24 Plate Tesla during my travels across the North West North Wales and the West Midlands. However, I have seen several 24 Plate BYD models and a major North West dealership has announced it will sell BYD. Needless to say, Cheshire were knee deep in Porsche Taycan, BMW I4’s and IX’s with Volkswagen Group and Stellantis Group Brands are very common, there appears to be a move away from Tesla.

I believe the new electric Toyotas and Mazdas were based on Chinese model platforms, some even having just cosmetic bodywork changes to differentiate them from the Chinese cars they were based on. Their own JDM know how is too far behind the Chinese for them to compete directly. The future for legacy makers looks like collaboration with Chinese companies or producing cars in China for the export market, a bit like Tesla do at the moment.

Though the other major Korean electronics brand, LG is a major automotive supplier today, supplying the batteries, infotainment and electronic motors for the Chevy Bolt EV, they haven't planned on launching a car under the LG brand yet. Was this comment written by Elliott's mum? His take on Tesla missed by a mile. Tesla postponed "model 2" not becuase of work on the Cybertruck but to fully concentrate on AI development. Musk has said Tesla will invest $10 billion this year on AI hardware alone so trying to ramp up a new "unboxed" production process for the model 2 at the same time could cripple them financially. Hence the massive layoffs to cut costs and announcement to release new interim models using existing production lines.

I feel the same way about hybrids. I want to accept them as an ally, but it feels like it is missing the mark. I don't think they could make a battery big enough and small enough ICE engine to make the math work out for it. Just go with full BEV!
@philipbrown9006

But the maths does work out. The cost of the smaller ICE and the much smaller battery works out cheaper than either a BEV or an ICEV and gives the best features of both. That's why hybrid sales are increasing faster than either.

The BMW i3 could have been great. However, I think unfortunately BMW made some big mistakes by trying too hard. The tyres were too narrow because BMW put too much effort into energy saving. Those tyres made the ride and steering not 🎉BMW. No power seats and the seats too thin compromising the seat comfort. Then I think the suicide doors were a mistake and normal doors would have worked better. Had BMW updated the design they would have had a great city car.

@gaobili
@gaobili 2 месяца назад
Last year there were rumors (or complaints?) claiming that hybrids were hogging charging stations and should be disqualified from the green plate, but for now nothing has changed. Like the North American and European markets, the sales trend for hybrids is very positive, and there is less conflict with BEVs, and more of a takeover of ICEs. According to the government's plan, ICEs will be replaced by hybrids, BEVs and hydrogen vehicles together in 2035. When the situation is in line with the plan, I don't think the government will intervene prematurely in the development of hybrid cars.

Rocket Man sees the future in his Cybercabs. No-one will need to own a car, as it will be just as cheap to travel in one of these. They will probably use hybrids, as a 99% duty cycle will be more profitable than the 70% of a BEV. Hence no need for charging stations. If it works he will make trillions.
