I thought there was a good chance we'd all die before it released. The world got a bit shaky there for a bit during development. And yes, never getting to play Metroid Prime 4 was at the forefront of my mind when worrying about the world ending in 2020. Shut up, I don't have a problem.
Federation Force is a meme but it may be oddly important as its ending cutscene segways almost perfectly into what is shown in the Prime 4 trailer. Sylux steals a Metroid egg from the feds at the end of FF and shows up with metroids in the trailer for MP4
And it adds to the lore with the chozo memories. Told us a lot of how the metroids were made and imprisoned under the planet, and set up the conflict between the tribes which we would later learn about in Dread
Can't have a Metroid video that acknowledges Other M without people whining about it not being canon. I hate how it portrayed Adam but there's no way I'm letting anyone decanonize my man Anthony.
The Prime games are canon to the main timeline; they’re just a separate story arc that’s largely unrelated to that of the main games. The first game was at FIRST conceived as a soft reboot, but they ultimately decided to make it part of the main timeline.
@@ChemaDarks Not true: Among other references, Metroid Prime’s very first logbook entry explicitly states that the Pirates on the Orpheon are survivors of M1/Zero Mission, Federation Force uses the Federation logo we saw in Other M, and Ridley has his remaining Prime cybernetics in Samus Returns. Sakamoto himself has stated in interviews that the Prime games are part of the main timeline, and that decision was made early on in Prime 1’s development. The reason there aren’t a lot of references between the 2D and Prime games is because their respective story arcs just… aren’t that relevant to each other: The Prime saga explores different parts of the galaxy and shows Samus fighting new threats, and their storylines are resolved between the events of the 2D games. As Sakamoto put it, “they have nothing to do with each other”. This was a deliberate choice, to give both Sakamoto and Retro as much creative freedom as possible without conflicting in any meaningful way. So yeah, TL;DR, the Prime and 2D games tell two story arcs that aren’t relevant to each other, but both still happen in the same canon timeline.
@@fredjones2170 they only share the manga as an origin story for easier development, the federation logo doesn't mean anything, the extra fight in MSR just shows Ridley recovering from zero mission(manga), wich is the only thing similiar cuz of the manga origin they share, Sakamoto can say anything about the games but what he did in other m just shows that a proyect by himself is not that well thought-out, he only gaves the ip to other studios and says yes to everything the fans ask story wise because he can't handle a modern story for metroid
@@ChemaDarks … What are you talking about? The first chapter of the manga came out AFTER Prime 1 was released. And what does Sakamoto’s skill as a writer have to do with how the Prime games were developed? This argument doesn’t make any sense.
I am commenting to help with the algorithm. I am surprised this videos doesn't have more views. Especially because they just announced Metroid Prime 4 and showed some game play.
Thank you for creating this. I appreciate your level of detail. Despite growing up in the 2000s, Metroid is a series that completely passed me by, thus I'm a new fan and starting Metroid Prime for the very first time. I'll probably play Zero Mission eventually as well.
You know that is a good question, and why would she team up with them when Dracula and Sandman would have been a better pick to work with then King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard.
I'll never forget back in 02 getting Game Cube ready GBA ready me been 16 years old and getting Prime and Fusion at a Circuit City at the same time.... Them days and times were simply the best 😌
@@Leonkennedy19992 I didn't like how the portray Samus with that irrational fear of Ridley when she has now multiple times killed him. That was my biggest gripe, plus why can't they ever make her look how she is described in canon description. She looked like a skinny little model in Other M but in some other games she does look like a tall warrior built woman.
@max666tall yeah same. I understand the trauma, but that was addressed on the manga and she got over it. When she was still in her teens i believe. I see samus as a female version of kratos 2018. A focused and strong character, but that still has compassion.
Nice! I appreciated the near hostile takeover by KenzieK at the mention of The Federation Force. I hope this does well for you. I'm a Trek nerd through and through, but I always appreciate a good Metroid lore video.
I knew nothing about Metroid. However I bought a Nintendo series action figure of her. So it's great you have explained what it actually is to me lol It's a cool fig 👍🤘
Watching this made me want to replay the prime games again, lol. Thank you for this fun overview of everything. The Chozo are one of my favorite sci-fi alien species. I was very excited to see the trailer for Prime 4! Dread was excellent a few years ago (the EMMIs were terrifying), so I'm hoping they'll continue a good streak with this next one! God be with you out there, everybody. ✝️ :)
@OrangeRiver, it seems ridiculous to me that as of Metroid Dread, not one Space Pirate scientist or rogue faction federation personnel would have bothered to take multiple samples of metroid DNA and have multiple secret labs that Samus doesn't know about...
Now, let's see where Metroid Prime 4 fits into all this. Also, Metroid Pinball. The time Samus got stuck in morphball mode and landed on planet Pinball.
Metroid Timeline: 1) Worf won every single poker game for years. 2) "The Emissary" displayed his masterful, yet last, poker win. 3) Director Sloan, and sub-operative Section 31 agents Geordi and Data, prevented Worf from any further wins. 4) The Anti-Time Space Eruption in the Devron System reversed time to attempt an erasure of Worf's previous winning record.
4:35 If I know Japanese creatives is that they never let characters that clearly died in situations impossible to survive, well not survive. So adam's brother is most likely sylux.
Prime games usally takes place between in between other games. Metroid Dread would be last in the Time Line because Samus is the last Metroid while Metroid Prime 4 would come before Fusion.
I think their canonicity is somewhat in flux, much like Star Trek: The Animated Series. But there's a reasonable expectation they could be part of the same universe.
The odd thing about the Metroid timeline is that unlike most other video game timelines, it's not the order of games that is confusing, but rather... the amount of time that passes BETWEEN those games. Depending on who you ask, you might hear from one person that the series spans several decades, while another might say that every single game is crammed within the span of 2-3 years, depending on how much evidence they ignore. Here's my best shot at a rundown: Zero Mission: Set in 20X5. We don't know the exact decade but based on some details from Corruption, we can definitively rule out 2005, 2015, and 2095 as possibilities, and for other reasons (mainly involving Admiral Dane's backstory), I'm almost positive it's not 2025 either. For the purposes of demonstration, let's just assume that ZM takes place in the first possible year that it feasibly could, being 2035. Prime: According to an official book, it takes place 3 years after Zero Mission, so 2038. We also know from in-game info that the Pirates were on Tallon IV for quite a while before Samus arrived, further backing up that there was a bit of a time skip between the two game. Hunters: All we know is that it's somewhere between Prime and Echoes. No clue which it's closer to. *shrugs* Echoes: Takes place 6 months before Corruption, so after taking that game into account, I estimate that Echoes is likely set sometime around 2041. Corruption: As previously stated, this game begins 6 months after Echoes. Also, according to Federation Force's official website, "several years" pass between Corruption and FF. While "several" isn't exactly a rigid measurement, the consensus is that it generally means more than 3, but not by much, so 4 years makes the most sense, placing Corruption in 2042. Any more and there would be less time between Prime and Echoes for Hunters to squeeze in. Federation Force: Explicitly stated to take place in 20X6, but we know that all of those other Prime games can't fit within a year, meaning that FF takes place a whole 11 years after Zero Mission, from 2035 to 2046. Samus Returns: Takes place immediately before Super, which based on current knowledge would place it in 2047, or maybe at the very end of 2046. Super: Stated in an old commercial to be set in 20X7, which for our purposes would be 2047. That said, if any date might get retconned by the release of Beyond, it'd be this one. For now though, this is where we stand. Other M: They're deliberately vague about how much time passes between Super and Other M but it must have been a while for the Metroids and Space Pirates to "fade from memory", and for the Bottle Ship experiments to take place. I would guess it's probably been several months to a year, so maybe 2048? Beyond(?): Beyond is set in 20X9, which should be 2049, a mere 3 years after Federation Force. I can't imagine someone as spiteful as Sylux waiting an extra decade to enact whatever his plan is. While this does make sense, I have suspicions that they MIGHT decide to retcon the 20X7 date for Super so that Beyond ends up taking place before Samus Returns. If so, then Beyond will still be in 20X9, but SR, Super, and Other M would get pushed back by at least a few years. We'll have to wait and see. Fusion: Takes place "many years" after the Metroids on SR-388 were wiped out during Samus Returns. The minimum number that "many" could apply to is 5, so let's just go with that instead of adding on extra years without proof. That'd place Fusion in 2051-2052, unless they retcon Super's date, which would push Fusion back to 2054 at the absolute earliest. Dread: All we know is that it's after Fusion, that's it. Since Samus's suit isn't fully healed yet I would imagine that it's not TOO far forward, but otherwise there's nothing I could use to give a number. So yeah, in the end, the Metroid series definitely spans more than 15 years, but could reasonably fit within 20.
What's interesting about Other M is that the events of the game are still clearly canon, but the game itself... isn't. They've completely dumped that characterization of her and went back to how she was shown in Super Metroid and the Prime series.
I've always wished for a TV show on a Sspace Station that took place in the Meteoid Universe. Such untapped world building potential due to how brilliantly the franchise was set up. It's also nice to see that a game was made that continued after the events of Metroid Fusion after all these years. That was quite a difficult game to beat as well so it definitely left an impact on a teenage me.
Primes have been outright states to be canon by both series directors. Proteus Ridley exists as he does as an attempt for a miminum levek consistency (in that he was slowing returning to an organic form). Other M is canon. Just not well written and even worsely dubbed. Contradictions be damned, Zero Mission and Samus Returns contradicts Super/Fusion, as she per Fusion Samus only learned to Wall Jump and Shine Spark in Super Metroid. Metroid is not a Bastion of consistency.
Not a gamer so I don't get a lot of gamer recommendations from YT. I have seen Samas Aran in... Other places online so I was very surprised to see an image of the character (fully clothed) in my feed cuz of watching Orange River's Trek content.
Honestly, this video is very lacking in professionalism. I get that you don't like Federation Force (I didn't either), but if you're going to make a review on a series' whole chronology the least I'd expect is a more objective insight into each game. And neglecting an official remake of a game to put a fan remake reeks fanboyism. Lastly, the attempts at humor in some parts of the video feel very forced. TBH.
I'm sorry but this is incredibly ignorant. This video is not a goddamn review, it's an overview of the lore. As in, recounting the events in-universe. Federation Force is a joke but that's neither here nor there...and as for AM2R, it's widely respected in the community for a reason. The "fanboyism" comment is incredibly rude and dismissive of the artistry that went into that project. Also, I'm sorry that I tried to be funny instead of dry and boring, but it's worked for most people.
I'd leave Other M out. It contradicts every other game and does not deserve to be part of the timeline. It almost killed the series, and the only way it was successfully brought back was by never mentioning it again.
If you look into the Japanese version it makes a lot more sense. Like the ENG version makes Samus look like a bizarrely dysfunctional person, the JP version makes it much clearer that she starts the game really fucked up from Super, and she has way more agency.
@@StormsparkPegasus No it's perfectly in-line with the series for Samus to have had a traumatic experience from Super. The gameplay does have serious problems but that's nothing to do with the story.
