From the very moment I read The Silmarillion, Fingolfin was my favourite elf. No one else as far as I know had the courage to deliberately seek out the most powerful being in Arda and challenge him to single combat, alone and at Morgoth's own fortress. Finwe might have died at Morgoth's hand, but it was Morgoth who sought him out when going to steal the Silmarils. Other great heroes fought Sauron, fought Balrogs, joined forces to fight Morgoth, but no one else fought him alone and directly took the fight to him. In fact, it's only Fingolfin, Thorondor the great Eagle, Ungoliant and Tulkas the Mighty who injured Morgoth personally. It's ludicrous that a "mere elf" would be on that list.

I think live action will never get close to what this story deserves. I think Animation would be the way to go, as it is not limited by most external difficulties of live action, such as casting and aging of actors. This Amazon Lord of the Rings series cutting corners to put characters with thousand years apart in the same room should be what will shelf any perspective of a live action of Silmarillion be any good.

Fingolfin the most steadfast and valiant Elf ever, rode on his horse to Angband to challenge Morgoth to single combat and injured him seven times and hewed Morgoth’s foot limp. With all the technology nowadays I think it would be doable to give this battle fair in a live action show. But don’t forget his valor in leading his people from Aman to Beleriand through the horror and danger of Helcaraxe 😎

Meanwhile, some actual idiots out there are literally accusing Fingolfin of being "dumb/stupid" because he challenged Morgoth is ......😒 He obviously knew that he simply cannot defeat Morgoth (killing him is impossible)....duh.... I think it's pretty clear in the story that he was not in control of his emotions at all and that he rode with this extreme rage and despair and went to challenge Morgoth. It is supposed to be a tale of an individual who lost his father, son (Argon-not completely canon) and daughter-in-law(Elenwe), separated from his wife and mother, have an unresolved issue/problem with his younger brother and the Teleri, lost a lot of warriors, and is someone who also fought against the forces of Morgoth in more than 300 years, someone who is afraid of losing everything dear to him and was absolute tired of all of Morgoth's shit. He confronted him at last and put up a hella good fight and was literally the only mortal who was able to wound the devil himself. Some fans are literally criticizing him harshly just because they want him to stay perfect and do everything that is considered "smart." Yeah....whatever... Noldor kings are somehow destined to die in a horrible, tragic ways...they just do and Fingolfin choosing the way he want to die is just metal. Do we really need to explicitly mention the word "depression/depressed" everytime a character went through a lot of horrible stuffs. It doesn't matter if you're an elf or something else, if you're characters are not robots, they can definitely feel fear, despair, loneliness, great great sadness, paranoia and other different strong emotions. I feel like these are also the type of people who will accuse Eowyn of being "selfish" and "negligent" of her own people for disobeying her uncle and leaving the remaining Rohirrim leaderless. Yeah, if they're just looking at the surface level then yeah, they might be technically right and not wrong at all..... but completely ignoring the backstory and point-of-view of a character and just stupidly judge them basing on their actions alone is a big NO NO for me.

@DragonSlayerCommentariesHQ 3 года назад
I mean Gil-Galad and Elendil both lost their duels against Sauron very quickly, but at the time Sauron was at the height of his power in that age due to wearing his ring. It was a literal stroke of fate that Isildur even managed to cut off the finger that Sauron was wearing his ring on, but many times Sauron's downfall has always come from underestimating people less powerful than him.
@dlevi67
@dlevi67 3 года назад
@@DragonSlayerCommentariesHQ That's what happens in the movies. Tolkien's writings have a different take, and Isildur cuts off the ring from the dead body of Sauron, as he too has been killed in the fight with Gil-Galad and Elendil. It was no "stroke of fate"; although I agree that the downfall of the powerful at the hand of the humble is a recurring theme in Tolkien's work, it isn't "always" so.

Ah. One of my favorite 5 elves. I'm almost sorry for Fingon. He was such a hero and important character in his own right but compared to his father? Always in the shadow and with a MUCH worse death. Fingolfin was what is best in Noldor, even if he didn't repent like his brother, its a mark of glory in Tolkiens writings that no matter what the Noldor otherwise wrought in the war of the jewels, and despite all he suffered, no one ever have a bad word about Fingofin. Both in and out of universe that's pretty good characterization with such disjointed writings. Not to mention that it is his bloodline that leads to Aragorn. One can but hope he was released from Mandos with his kids one day to live again in Valinor in peace. Thank you for this. One of the best 1st age characters.

I wonder what became of Fingolfin's spirit (i.e. fëa) when he was killed by Morgoth? As far as I know, it's not specifically mentioned. We do know that the spirits of dead elves generally go to the Halls of Mandos in Valinor, where they tarry for a period of time before potentially being reclothed in a body (hröa) and released back into the world again (i.e. reincarnated). There are a few exceptions, like Fëanor himself who was permanently in the Halls due to the nature of his spirit and others who refused to be re-incarnated, and his mother Míriel Þerindë, whose life force essentially was consumed by the birth of her mighty son, at least until Finwë himself died and they swapped places, he staying the Halls with Fëanor for all time. Others refuse the summons of Mandos to the Halls completely and haunt Middle Earth still as spirits. We know it's possible for this to occur. Finrod Felagund is said to have been reincarnated after his death in Middle Earth and then he returned to life in Valinor to life with his beloved Amarië. Glorfindel was slain by a Balrog at Gondolin but was re-embodied, given an upgrade in power to near-Maia levels and sent back to assist in the fight against Sauron. What would have happened to the spirit of Fingolfin? Although he partook in the rebellion of the Noldor against the Will of the Valar, it was reluctantly that he did so. Although he took part in the Kinslaying at Alqualondë, it was by accident as he mistook the situation he happened upon. Would his great deeds have earned him the Pardon of the Valar and reincarnation back to a life in Valinor?

I think I heard in one other video on Fingolfin that on his way to Angband alone, every part of his body and his horse was apparently shining with such great, righteous anger, that all the forces of Morgoth who saw him hid in great fear, for they thought that it was none other than the Vala Ulme(that most likely is not be the correct name or spelling), the Huntsman of the Valar, who took great pleasure in hunting down and killing the dark creatures of Morgoth.

My favorite is elf (or any character) is Fëanor. Especially at the moment of first uttering the Oath before the Kinslaying. The moment when you become rightly aware of the truth that there will be no justice unless you create it yourself and promise to never ever lose focus from this moment on. During that moment of epiphany, he realized how deeply the Valar had failed in protecting the Eldar in Valinor. His own mother, Míriel had withered away because she lost her will to live in Valinor. His father Finwë had just become slain as the first ever elf killed in Valinor. Fëanor had seen closer than anyone how the Valar - in spite of often having all kinds of good intentions - were not able to judge what is the best way to deal with Melkor. Moreover, he grasped how Melkor was actually right in saying that the Valar, too, coveted the Silmarils (although for the noble purpose of reviving Telperion and Laurelin, but that also counts as coveting). Valinor at the time was, as a matter of fact, nothing like the beacon of joy, beauty and safety that was the Valar's original selling point for making the Eldar leave the Middle Earth. And the moment right before the Kinslaying at Alqualondë, Valinor had even become a prison for the Noldor, which was apparently the last drop. Of course, thereafter, Fëanor himself showed pretty limited capacity for good judgement, to say the least. In addition to many regrettable decisions, he also made some batshit crazy ones (like burning the ships and chasing the orcs with his vanguard to Angband). Those parts are somewhat more difficult to relate to. Even so, if anyone actually had the right to "blame the Valar" - not just as a metaphor but in concrete terms - that was Fëanor.

Ideally an anthology series would be amazing telling individual stories from the Silmarillion, eg a few episodes on Fingolfin, a few on Gondolin, a few on Beren & Luthien. Spinoff series?? By all that is good and Holy, I sure hope not.... After the absolute desecration that is the Ruin of Powar Amazon show, the farther away Amazon is from Tolkien's work, the better.

One quite unimportant question I had was about Fingolfin's hair. Most of the time, he's depicted as having dark hair as the Noldor mostly did. But sometimes he is shown as having golden hair, and there is mention in places of this perhaps being from his Vanyar mother, Indis (which is why his full brother Finarfin was blond too). Does anyone know the truth of it?
@captnemo3677
@captnemo3677 3 года назад
@Sweeperboy. Fingolfin had dark hair. It is written that only Finarfin and his children had blond hair out of the royal house of the Noldor, with the exception of one of Feanor's sons.

How many Noldor left Valinor with Feanor? Thousands, tens of thousands, millions maybe? Does anybody have a good estimate? I don’t know I was just wondering what you guys think.

Would love to see any of the First Age stories on film. If live action isn't doable, animation would be good too.

there is only one thing I don't quite grasp. On more than one occasion you call fingolfin the "eldest" brother. But I thought that Feanor was the eldest with another (first) wife of Finwë and that Fingolfin and Finarfin where his younger Half-brothers from the seconde wife of Finwë?

I believe that the Silmarillion should be left alone. It is not a united story and the various stories and happenings can be made sense of in the mind, but not on a screen; this is because omission isn’t possible in live-action, you see everything. In a book there can be vague details and interpretation. I fear the commercial monster of Hollywood and Amazon would fill the gaps in a manner not very respectful to the wider world of Tolkien.

I don't trust any major network to do right by Tolkien's work. It would be incredible to see many stories and characters from the first to the third age come to life on the t.v screen I fear they would do much more harm than good. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I've always loved Féanor, but Im huge on loyalty especially when it comes to family, and although it's a weakness I love to take care of people and I put the needs of others before mines, which is why I favor Fingolfin. I also have a toxic relationship with my little brother, he's probably worse than Féanor.

I just love how everything in the earlier ages was more powerful and saturated. It's that slow decay of the initial lifeforce and essense breathed into valaria and arda that truly makes the entire legendarium infinitely wondrous. Our imaginations were completely captured by the struggle between Sauron and positive forces in the 3rd, but their powers were middling tribulations compared to the horrors and splendors in these times. When the greatest amongst the elves could make a demigod bleed before demons and dragons. I'll never stop loving all this and I would never want to.

Leave this to the imagination of reading, any live action production will be horrible. Now if it was animated it may be pretty cool. 🤔
