Hello old comment here but the reason why cowcatchers called that is because Cowcatchers are the metal grilles or frames you see at the front of old locomotives. They're called "cowcatchers" because, in the early days of railroads, trains often traveled through rural areas where livestock like cows could wander onto the tracks. The cowcatcher's job was to push these animals (and any other debris) off the tracks to prevent accidents and keep the train moving safely. So, the name "cowcatcher" comes from its function of "catching" or moving cows out of the way.

To answer the question as why those in Boston threw stones and fired a shot at the engine, you have to remember there is a large Irish American population there and you have to remember 1969 was the start of the troubles in Northern Ireland which would cause anti British sentiments there. So yeah, timing to promote a Buy British tour there in a place full of those of Irish descent probably wasn't a good idea with hindsight.

Just imagine how Gordon and family felt (family as in Surviving Cousins like Ryan, Spencer, Green Arrow, Mallard, the other surviving Gresley designs…just to let you know, the way an engine is a cousin to another is most likely, their blueprints have to be made by the same person and the engine being built in the same workshop as the other. Gordon is an A0 and Ryan is an N1/2, same creator but different class of engine…I understand if that’s complicated XD) Also cowcatchers are a thing in front of a locomotive so if something gets onto the track, the person or living thing won’t get dragged under the wheels- It’s called cowcatches possibly because they were designed for tramways? Also the kids threw stones at Scott and wanted the crew the fire back with coal because they needed coal for their stoves I believe?

Little late to be answering this, but the reason Scotsman stopped in in each City for only exactly 2 days is because all those dates fell on weekends. Perfect time for the locals and tourists to turn out and take photos.

With your fascination to history, Tug has made more timeline videos. I'd say the best order to watch them would be: Railway Series 1806-2020 (you already saw) TV Map of Sodor Seasons 1-7 (also seen) May updates to the map Model Era Timeline CGI Timeline Also before reacting the map updates, I recommend rewatching the previous map and maybe the RWS timeline to refresh your memory.

Cow-catchers were invented in early America in 1830 with the "JOHN BULL" 0-4-0, that had problems running on the light American tracks on the CAMDEN AND AMBOY RY. Thus John Steven's who was the very young mechanic, rebuilt it with with the smaller front pony wheels built into the cowcatcher, that helps guide the wheels into the curves. And the "JOHN BULL" is saved at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.!!

To answer some of your questions... Cowcatchers are used by some locomotives to push cows and other large animals off the line without hurting them. Cowcatchers are also used to stop cars from derailing an engine should a car be in front of a train. LNER A4 Dwight D. Eisenhower looks like Mallard because they are of the same class of locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, thus making them siblings. Flying Scotsman is their cousin. Yes, The Green Bay National Railroad Museum is still around and you can see Dwight D. Eisenhower there if you want. Steam Engines are able to travel on railroads/railways in winter, but Flying Scotsman was stored during winters as to not have her weathered during her US Tour.

the cow catchers are called that because they prevent engines running over cows or other animals and it will just push it out the way

Most of the time people try and name things according to their general function, so that makes sense for the cowcatcher (except for the fact that it doesn't mainly catch cows lol). Hi from Green Bay, GO PACKERS!!! F.S. 4472 visited the NRRM here in 1970 when I was only 11 years old. There were Thousands of people waiting, and they were actually standing directly on the tracks of the C&NW RR which still had the "400" Passenger expresses running South to Milwaukee. Thus 4472 and 400 and freights were delayed by many hours. When 4472 arrived it ran through the switch at SUGAR FACTORY Siding in Ashwaubenon at Milepost 239. Then 4472 moved Very Slowly down the steep hill with many sharp curves, and arrived on the Long display track, and at the eastern end was UNION PACIFIC 4017 4-8-8-4 BIG BOY SIMPLE ARTICULATED MALLET. And the photographer from the GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE PAPER, AND climbed on top of BIG BOY 4017 next to the 2 smokestacks and bell, then took his photos looking down onto F.S. 4472. Even now after 52 years I still have those old yellowed clippings. From Steven. Employee at NRRM from 1984 to 1989 as tour guide and train conductor, and grounds keeper, and Original "Hobo" actor. Thanks!! GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.!!!!! 🇺🇸. ALLELUIA!!!!! AMEN 🙏. MON., JANUARY 31, 2022 A.D.

soooo the reason why american locos have cowcatchers is dat if a stray animal or a farm animal accidently got in the tracks the train can just push the animal off gently without getting it killed

Heyo Wallace! :) Gotcha, thank you for clarifying and reminding me of that. It honestly does seem self-explanatory, but then again some words have totally different meanings. It's really cool that people have taken into consideration how animals could possibly be harmed by locomotives and created a way to hopefully get around that. I would hope that most animals would move out of the way, but I suppose that there are odd cases where an animal does get hit. Thank you again for helping me understand that, I appreciate it. this is the reason why cowcatchs is needed . Ans : In the 1940s and '50s "cowcatcher" jumped the tracks and took on a new life in TV and radio advertising jargon. The term was used for a commercial that was aired immediately before a program and that advertised a secondary product of the program's sponsor. Such ads apparently got the name because they "went in front."

Heyo jud! :) That's totally true, I didn't even consider that. I came upon the news regarding The Unlucky Tug relatively recently, last I heard someone from RU-vid is looking into it. Apparently, his channel got discarded due to the channel being somewhat linked to a previously banned email. It seems like a really weird policy but hopefully, it gets resolved relatively easily. The Unlucky Tug has made some insanely detailed videos, so it'd be extremely unfortunate for their stuff to ultimately get trashed. I'll be interested to see what happens as the situation gets handled. I've had a lot of people request that I react to more of their content, so hopefully it can get released for viewing again. Thank you for sharing some input on the situation, his Twitter is probably the easiest way to stay up to date on the entire event. So I've heard! :) I love when certain inventions have straightforward names. I should have assumed that was the case, but this was a video that kind of introduced me to the idea of cow catchers, so I'm not 100% surprised that I didn't know what they are used for. It's a shame that something like that has to be created, but then again it would be more devastating if more animals were harmed without the safety of a cow catcher. Heyo Josh! :) Oh gotcha gotcha, thank you for explaining that to me. That sort of makes sense because of the name. I'd still be concerned since most locomotives go pretty fast, but I'm assuming that the cowcatchers help at least a little bit. Is the cowcatcher a USA-specific thing or is it a rule that all engines are required to have one? It's really cool to see how there have been different things created to benefit both humans, animals, and locomotives to make transportation safer. Thank you again for letting me know why they are used. Additionally, thank you for coming by to support this video in general, I appreciate your time. Have a good one friendo! :]
