I think that while the Regulators can't prove each finger you bring is from someone evil, they find you to be trustworthy. This would be one reason why your level and karma have to reach a certain amount- talented enough to destroy evil, honorable enough to bring one finger from each villain. I wish that there were side quests about this, though. Imagine having to validate somebody's kills, hunt down a traitor, recruit new members or even just take on more bounties!

The first time I ever went to Washington DC was in 2008, in October. The whole city was plastered with Fallout 3 advertisements, and the Metro stops (many of which from the game I actually ended up stopping at and taking advantage of) had lifesize stickers of Brotherhood Paladins in power armor affixed to pillars around the escalators. Seeing all this I was a bit shocked, I didn’t have an Xbox 360 or PS3 at the time so I didn’t get the significance of the advertisements. Seeing all these wonderful historical places in the city and then turning around about 2 months after that and getting an Xbox and playing Fallout 3 was so interesting, the synchronicity of the design of the virtual city that lay in ruins and the modern real life equivalent was amazing. I’ll never forget that week in Washington, being caught up in some of the coolest history in the world as well as one of the most interesting media campaigns ever was an experience I’ll never forget. I love this game, thank you Ox for exploring it so much, so well.

I think I got both perks if I remember correctly and just killed everybody. I switched my karma back and forth by donating in Rivet City and stealing or killing good people. I basically played an opportunist willing to do anything for the best possible loot while putting on airs of being a hero. Basically if someone was paying me to give them something I'd do it, get paid, then steal it off of them. If that didn't work, I'd kill them and take it. If it wasn't possible to get the item back after giving it to them, I'd kill them or sell them to slavers instead of completing the quest, and if killed I'd sell their ears to the boys down at Littlehorn. If I happened to kill a bad guy, I'd stop by the Regulators place when I had good karma to make a bit of caps off of them.

Bizarre thing happened to me many years ago when I played Fallout 3. Something bugged with the Regulator HQ, somehow Sonora Cruz decided to wander out of the HQ, got spooked by a fight, and never returned. To this day she wanders the wasteland. The only issue is I can never find her so I end up collecting hundreds of fingers and nowhere to put them. The only other NPC I've seen do that was one of the bartenders in Rivet City, but that was because one day I got bored and went on a murder-rampage, which must have broken his AI and turned him into a wandering merchant.

Hey Oxhorn, in Fallout 4, there's an exchange when you first enter Goodneighbor that I always found a bit puzzling, and I was hoping you could make a video offering your two caps on it. After Finn dies (whether you kill him or Hancock stabs him), Hancock will tell you "Goodneighbor's off the people, for the people." Anyone even modestly well-read in U.S. History will know that this line was originally from the Gettysburg Address, which not only promoted unity in represenative democracy, but also racial equality (because the Address was done during the height of the American Civil War). You have the option to tell Hancock "That sounds like anarchy," to which Hancock will reply "The best kind of anarchy, so long as you remember who's in charge." That's all well and good, but here's where the head-scratcher comes into play: All the companions who are normally considered "good guys," like Preston, Piper, Curie, Valentine, etc., all LIKE it when you select this dialogue option! Equating democracy & equality to anarchy is something the good guys LIKE! That doesn't make any sense! Maybe if this were just one companion, we could chalk it up to a development error. Like ... maybe Bethesda meant for the Companion to dislike it but programmed in "like" by mistake. But this is EVERY Companion who is normally considered good! So is that some kind of political commentary Bethesda in the real world is trying to subtly squeeze in? Do the people at Bethesda, in the real world, actually think democracy and equality is bad for us? Or maybe it's a subtle hint as to how life before the Great War was? There's the occasional lore in the Fallout world suggesting that the few years immediatley before Great War were either martial law or bordering the line. Perhaps people just became so use to martial law that it's the only "government" they can comprehend? Anything that isn't martial law is therefore non-government, aka anarchy. Also, remember that the Cold War never really ended in the Fallout world. The generation immediately before the Great War - the generation that the Sole Survivor was a part of - had lived in this "Red Scare" their whole lives! Living in constant fear of some sort of enemy like Commmunist China can really take its toll on people's psyche. You need look no further than the Commonwealth's fear of The "Boogeyman" Institute to see that! Well, what if life before the Great War was so drenched in fear of Communism ... and the hatred of Communism became more and more entrenched in people's minds, and the paranoia of communism became greater and greater, that the people slowly began to take on the very traits they believed they hated? That happens from time to time! A person who is so passionate in his hatred of a particular enemy, and is so obsessed with defeating that enemy, that he, unbeknownst to himself, effectively BECOMES the very thing he's fighting against! The Direct-to-DVD movie "Batman: Under the Red Hood" is a perfect example of such a story. In that movie, Jason Todd becomes so obsessed with stopping crime that he literally turns himself into a mob boss, because he honestly believes that's the best way to control the worst of crime! So, could the people right before the Great War have potentially been so scared of communism that they've lost touch with what makes America a "free" country? What are YOUR thoughts on the matter?

It's been suggested by some that some time after the split timeline in the _Fallout_ universe the Arlington House was demolished and a standard housing unit was put in. People either suggest it was done to try and convince people that the small, mass-produced houses we see in _Fallout_ are "Traditional, American architecture", which would explain why all the houses we see in D.C. are standard suburban houses, even though real D.C. has both a lot of mansions and condominiums. The other explanation was that the mansion was too expensive to upkeep, and the government destroyed it and just threw up a cheap mass-produced house and said it was the original Arlington House.

I don't think they care about how many fingers you bring in, the benefactor has put this in his plan that he would gladly pay 50 to 100 caps per villain, he saves quite a bit by only expressing the need for 1 finger (and if pinkys and thumbs are not accepted, that still a huge saving for the benefactor) As long as the watchers continue to see you doing your part, keeping a high karma, then if you could want (possible) to cheat for a few more caps they would let it slide imo. Roll up with a big bag of thirty or forty misc fingers, pay me my money. They probably wouldn't care if you killed 10 or 40 villains, point is they know you are killing villains for their good weakened elder God battling the forces of Chaos trying to enter the world. FO5 the warp will finally open.

You can take a finger print with sticky tape and dusting powder, there's enough duct tape still around for it to be possible that clear sticky tape still exists, take the print from the scene of the atrocity, possibly in blood, file it to compare it to the print of finger your handed, then all you need is a magnifying glass and a bit of time, if you have conned them they will know. It's how it was done before computerisation. It's slow and not so accurate but possible.

Then again, maybe Plunkett was running Arlington house as a safe house for the Temple of the Union. Or maybe he was a former TotU member. And I tried to get into the Regulators shack for hours before I did some online research figured out you couldn't get in unless you took the Lawgiver perk. Oh well, so much for exploring on your own. LOL

Oxhorn, we have been collecting and storing fingerprint data for over 150 years. and even the databases we use today are based on systems that old. Computers make searching them faster, but they are still sorted by several standard visual categories. Whorls, loops, etc. So using them in post-apocalyptic society is as viable as say in the Victorian era.
@girf4233
@girf4233 Год назад
I reckon the whole cutting off fingers thing is not only an honor system. But also a thing looked in to by other regulators. For example a regularor comes across a raider corpse missing all 10 fingers. Then notifies HQ and they check what sort of fingers people are bringing in. Someone bringing in 10 small ass fingers that look like pinkies is going to raise suspicion. Then there is also the fact that cheating the system like that in itself is an evil act. A thing someone committed to a cause of good would likely not do.

perhaps the original Arlington house in the fallout universe was destroyed in a fire some time after the divergence and years later a home for a graveyard caretaker was built on the same spot. there is also a mod for a restored Arlington house on the nexus.

You’re hand will change depending on what you do with the majority of your life. So it’s reasonable to assume that the Regulators know what the trigger finger looks like compared to a any other type of index finger. It’s still a flawed system, but raiders tend to use guns more often than farming tools so there should be a slight difference between settlers and raiders.

Hey, im sorry Oxhorn but there was no insult made to General Lee and alot of people around the USA respected him for his dignity, military intelligence, sincerity, honesty, and dutifulness. Lincoln actually highly respected him. he didnt want to even be involved in the war, he actually thought it was foolish and would only hinder us as a nation. he only joined when his home stated succeeded from the Nation. he did not wish to fight saying hed only raise his sword to protect his native state. so i dont see that as a disrespectful thing to General Lee, they both had respect and admiration towards one another both had similar views on slavery, just Lee wanted to defend his home, wouldnt you do the same?

Logical Phallusy Lee also freed his slaves, just remeber the civil was about more then just slavery.
@12434567891
@12434567891 7 лет назад
lol the only reason Lincoln didnt own slaves is because his church he went to condemned it. he actually said that slaves were inferior and that if there was another way to win the war without freeing part of them, he would do that. Lee and Lincoln both had the same views on the matter, they both saw it as an immoral trade and both agreed it was inhumane thing to do. But they both also said that it was nothing they could do about it because that's where they belonged lol. Lincoln wasnt this hero of Civil RIghts and Justice, he just didnt want to go down in history as the president who lost the nation they just fought to free. Lee only did what he did out of loyalty, not self gain or self preservation or to increase his reputation.

samuel rivera I think a majority of reasonable people will agree that in hindsight, we can see that both sides fought a war based on morals that really left a shell of the nation. It took years to rebuild the areas devastated by the war and Robert e Lee was a big part of how those citizens survived. Without compassion, understanding, and the ability to compromise, I'm 100% certain that our country will find another civil war to fight. Meanwhile our enemies abroad would be stupid not to take that opportunity to attack. Now back to your, in his place would you not do the same question, it's impossible to know. He thought he was doing the right thing and he cannot be vaulted for that. But do you think he would've changed his actions if he had known the outcome of the war or the 1000s of Virginian's and Americans who would end up dying for both the confederacy and the union? I like to think of Lee as one of the smartest generals of that Era and like to think he would've worked for a compromise as our whole government should have done. Slavery didn't disappear overnight and the atrocities committed by both sides have left scars still present today. All we can do today is strive to be better than our fore fathers and not make the same mistakes. Not to glorify the main ideology shared by a majority of people in the civil war, that some men are less human than others. Not to abandon our state and our government just because we disagree with radical behavior on both sides. Idk that's just me and my book comment.
@12434567891
@12434567891 7 лет назад
as much as i respect your comment the war wasnt even about the morality of anything. the Nation was built upon slavery and hard labor it didnt leave a shell of anything. it is our history that didnt affect how our nation developed, the nation continued to strive and be a major world power even to this day. the war was a political war that indirectly had an affect on slavery. our forefathers made no mistakes because AT THAT TIME is was completely acceptable to own slaves, however immoral you or i think it might be. the atrocities you speak of werent done to just slaves, they were done to indians, poor whites, mexicans, asians, basically anyone not rich or considered important. this comment had NOTHING to do with the aftermath of the Civil War,it was the fact that Oxhorn thought it was ironic that a portrait of Abraham Lincoln was found in Robert E Lee's house. which i said there is nothing ironic about it. it wasnt an insult it wasnt a blunt diss on Lee, even if it was intended as such.

Really late to the party but on the topic of fingers ; :p If you look at the hands of most people who have worked with their hands most of their life manually, you'll notice a slight bend in the finger towards the middle finger. Its very noticable in electricians, steelworkers, mudders, and athletes and is a by product of our constant grip pressures interacting on tendons, muscle wear, and joints (samething with ballet dancers and their big toe - it points inward after years of wearing the hard tipped shoes)

How to tell the difference between an index finger. At least in my case, the folds at the join extend towards the inside. Meaning the creases in the joint are longer on the left side of my right hand than on the left side of the same finger.

Away from all in the Capitol Wasteland. Seemed like a fitting end for my character.

You really can't tell the difference, unless the Regulators have some sort of device that can detect the DNA of each Finger to make sure that they don't come from the same Person. Cruz did say that the Regulators get embellished at times, does this mean they unlawfully kill for profit? Like for some reason when Your Karma goes down, the Regulators come to kill You without question. She did say that they're everywhere, but the only Regulator You see is Lucas Sims at Megaton. Unless, the Regulators work confidentially like the Railroad and then ware their Uniform while on a Bounty.

You really can tell which finger you're looking at by the fingerprints, the right-hand has the pattern going down and left and left-hand goes down and right.

I don't know if we're supposed to assume that's Robert E. Lee's house. It would have been over 200 years old by 2077 and there probably would have been some in-game lore referencing it as his home. I assume it is a home built in the time shortly before the nuclear holocaust.

Oxhorn maybe I can help you out. Yes both Index fingers look very similar but if you look at them you and see a bump on the right side of the left finger and vise versa. So if The Regulators only want the left finger then they can tell by the bump.

Actually, if you're observant enough, you may be able to tell the difference between a left and right index finger. Left index fingers tend to curve slightly to the left, and right ones to the right.

I agree with you on the theory of taking someone's finger and the fact that you could just fake it. I think it's more like proof of dedication to the cause. Like you have to prove yourself to them. And besides the fact that if you didn't kill this person it would probably come back to haunt.( No pun intended) Eventually they would figure out this person is not dead and you would look like a liar. Love your videos, keep it up.
@lucky8th

I would think its more likely they have sources to pass information to HQ and bodies missing a specific finger helps them identify the body. Like if you kill a guy they dont know its his finger specifically but then they get reports of a guy matching his description in the area they sent you to turning up dead missing a specific finger the regulators can be like ok you probably killed the right guy.

Shame that there wasn't a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier there. Also, after being to Arlington Cemetery three different times, the one in Fallout 3 does look a tad bit small compared to the real thing. Granted it is understandable due to time restraints but, I went to it in the game and was kind of like, "meh." Although the Abraham Lincoln shrine was kind of funny.

the first time I encountered the regulators I was heading to start the Pitt dlc quest line and I ran into the gang in a camp underneath an overpass I killed most of them, keep in mind my character is very evil and a fat cat. there was one left alive, I killed that one with a knife, ran out of ammo, I found it cool that they had a bounty on me and a description. this is why fallout 3 is better then 4

Finally finished my Neutral Karma Playthrough. Overall it wasn't too bad but it's difficult to maintain neutral karma early in the game unless you want to bypass common things. I ended up going to Tenpenny Tower a few times and stole anything not nailed down to balance out Karma back to neutral. I managed to get all neutral achievements and never needed to burn a perk to do it
