The development of the Briggs tank started at an unknown date at the research and development level of Fort Briggs. Fort Briggs is a military base situated at the Northern border, between Amestris and Drachma. Major General Olivier Mira Armstrong, the commander of Fort Briggs, wanted as many techniques in her arsenal as possible to combat Drachma. Additionally, because Fort Briggs is located in the most northern part of Amestris, the researchers and engineers are probably some of the most knowledgeable experts in Amestris when it comes to mechanics of materials. In order to keep automails running and to prevent their users from dying from frostbite, the materials used for the automails had to comply with various specifications. It can be expected that the engineers at Briggs have developed various materials which could be used for tanks in their effort to find usable materials for automails.

You could do a whole long string of series on the Vlkyria Chronicles tanks and vehicles. There is no shortage of material for review of semi realistic period tanks and gear in anime set in the ww1 and ww2 period.

Pretty much, the article which will be posted on our website on this vehicle and on the other two adaptations of FMA was already around 30 pages, but we only really wanted to do one video, as a lot of people might not like these anime vehicles either. Its a delicate balance and a slippery slope in that way. But yeah, valkyria is on my list to write on.

"The tank is unrealistically advanced for it's time" Amestrian military industry was pretty advanced all around for the time though. They were a nation often at war, plentiful in resources, full of engineering and scientific talent with the wealth to back up numerous academic organizations and industry, and they were quick to embrace new technologies, so they developed at a more rapid pace. So much so by 1915 they had stamped sheet metal SMGs and semi-automatic rifles with box magazines in common service. Their small arms tech was well into our equivalent of the 1940s and 50s.

I agree, I have been a bit too much focussed on comparing it to our time that i kinda forgot to tkae this into account. For the video its too late, but ill edit it in the article itself. I would argue that certain design steps are a few steps too far for a first tank, but then again, they also have panzershreks and 7.5 cm paks, even though their enemies dont seem to have tanks. Nevertheless, ill edit it in the article by tomorrow.

Interestingly, a box-magazine assault rifle was adopted by Russia in 1915, and the first proposed assault rifle I'm aware of was Italian model from I think 1898 - the adoption of automatic weapons in this era was limited by concerns over logistics more than by technology. Edit: rereading this, I see that's probably your point that they were adopting stuff well in advance of when it was commonly seen in our world.

The thing is, if enemy nations don't have their tanks of their own, there is no pressure for you to improve the design of your tank. This tank kinda exists in a vacuum, so a WW1 design would have made more sense. But it's not really a big deal, arguably.

@@GerardMenvussaproblem is, the other nations aren't fleshed out enough in terms of background and we don't know for sure if any of them had tanks or not. The writers left the world building just finished enough for the story to take place where they needed it to, then largely ignored the rest. It's both lazy and very unfortunate since I think the setting has a lot of potential for writing.

My best guess in the Brotherhood version of events at least, is that Father actively stifled attempts to create air travel. Allowing people faster and easier means to travel with-in the borders of the country that he's created suits his whims, but allowing for easier transportation outside of it, across all that rough terrain like the northern mountains or eastern desert, does not. It's in his best interest to keep things pretty insular. As for original FMA events, who knows? That one was kind of a mess of writing in retrospect and doesn't make nearly as much sense.

You should check out the tanks in the 80's anime "Venus Wars" and Shirow's "Dominion Tank Police" As my great grandfather commanded a Tiger in WW2 I am fascinated by anything dealing with armor warfare.

Years of warfare probably accelerated the development of amestress's technology combined with the ability of equivalent exchange it was easier for them to develop their tanks possibly cutting years off of R&D

Are you sure the technology is WW1 era? Because I distinctly remember widespread use of external magazine fed semi-automatic rifles. So in terms of small arms that puts it more late 40's/50's. I get that they give these early 20th century dates, but it's clearly an alternate Earth. There is no reason for those dates to correspond to ours. That being said, you are absolutely right that that tank is way too advanced for a first generation tank.

It might not be completely first generation though. And I know this is writing the show for the creators, but ft briggs probably does a lot of prototyping. Always looking for that cutting edge. You make a vehicle, then you go "okay, now how would we defeat it." Rinse and repeat, then you build the one that's better than the last three.

Has anyone noticed the inconsistencies in the front of the tank? The upper front plate is sometime sloped, sometime not. And the lower section sometimes has a flat horizontal portion like a Pz. III, while in other shots it’s gone like on the Pz. IV.

Like for this FMA article, i watched the entire sequal movie of the 2003 anime, for like 1 second of footage which shows that tanks were used. It ads to the story/usage and thus completeness of the article.

4:38 The suspension is basically Christie suspension used in T-34 and older BT tanks. It has smaller road wheels that T-34, but same amount of them.

I think Spookston already covered that tank well enough.... with it's huge number of terrible design features. Though, he still obnoxiously assumed it used nuclear shells, because fallout, when the setting's wikia explicitly states it uses conventional shells.

The Commanders cupola is a early type used on the Durchbruchswagen and the VK30.01H. IMHO your estimate of the time period is wrong. I never felt it was set in early 1900's to 1915. I thought the show was supposed to be set in late 1930's. I feel its closer to portraying Germany before WW2.

The Saga of Tanya the devil anime does the same think, suprisingly. The first thanks that appear in it are just Panzer III's. The story does toke place in an alternative 1920's universe, but the jump is still a bit much. I think the manga did it better, but I don't remember for sure. Haven't read the light novel.

@@DIEGhostfish in the original japanese version, it would have translated to generalisimo, but in the official translation to english, it became Fuhrer instead. Probably in a way to further reinforce the setting of Amestris in being a german inspired country.

Its more of a panzer 4 chasis, except for the front profile armor angling. The hull mg and driver port layout match the panzer 4, the co-driver and driver both have vision ports on the sides of the hull and the engine bay and rear hull resembles the panzer 4 more.
