The Functional Tennis Saber (Playtest and Review) #tennis
I was excited to be sent the brand new Saber from Functional Tennis to test and review. In this video I unbox it and take it onto court to test out.
The Saber is an upgrage from the Tennis Pointer (wooden spoon) and is a ‘sweet spot trainer’.
Let me know if you've tried the pointer or if you have any questions about the saber!
You can find out more about the product through the link below.

(Please note: this is an affilate Link, meaning that I get a few pennies if you buy anything through it, but costs you nothing extra!) Thanks for your support!)
The ball machine I'm using to make this video is the SlingerBag. You can find out more or purchase one (in the UK) through my affiliate link below:

Really good video thanks, I'm busting my arm going for big serves and not hitting the sweet spot, kills the whole game for me. Reckon I'll probably make a bit of scene using the Saber but I reckon well worth it. Thanks again for the video

Just tried using my Saber for the first time today. It is very challenging at first, and I was feathering the ball at first but eventually started hitting out with it. Lots of framed shots, but I’m sure in time, that should decrease🤞

I found my Dunlop Max500GS squash racket and used it to warm up behind the service box like I normally do. I choked up on the handle about 2 inches and started hitting some tennis balls with my partner. It was difficult initially due to the size and swing weight. After a few minutes, i got the hang of it and was able to rally about 20 balls. When I moved to the baseline and hit with my regular tennis racket, I was able to hit much crisper shots and closer to the sweet spot.

Update - just got the Saber today and wow, it's amazing. I warmed up with it behind the service line and then proceeded to move back to the baseline. It plays like a tennis racket and provides audible feedback that will let you know if you hit it on or off center. It's easy to shank it if you don't keep you eye on the ball. When I switched to my regular racket, I hit it cleaner and crisper. For the price of 2 tennis lessons, this is well worth the investment.

After the adjustment period using the Saber, do you find yourself reverting back to the old way of swinging as if you were using your standard racquet, or do you still maintain that extra focus?

I have a Toalson pointer with 60 square inch head size... It is definitely a beast for warm-ups and drills... However, there are 2 important facts: 1. training with it for more than 30 min will mess up with your normal strokes; 2. you need to drop the string tension significantly to compensate the head size, rule of thumb: new tension = normal tension / square_root [ normal head size / pointer head size ]

Toalson already came out with something similar, but with two different weights.

That’s right… I believe Toalson has a 60sq inch head rather than 37?

Hi, very interesting! Few months ago I bought the “SweetSpotter “ from America. It’s quite a cool tool, and also has a good sound, but very difficult at first. I wonder how you feel the 2 compare? Cheers, Charlie
@TheTennisMentor
@TheTennisMentor 2 года назад
Thanks Charles! The guys at SweetSpotter contacted me a while back and I thought it looked great! My concern was that I’d be sending balls over the fence and onto neighbouring courts😅. I imagine (like the pointer) you have to swing with a very flat path, whereas the Saber allows me to use my normal grips and swing path and is a lot more achievable, without being easy! I bet it’s good fun though!!💪
@charlesferber5849
@charlesferber5849 2 года назад
Yep , you’re right, balls do fly off , I use a court which is totally enclosed but still few go astray. The sound is really cool, like an echo boom, so it feels good and sounds good when you get it right, but definitely not easy. I’ve been in touch with Yann Azou for years, he’s a good guy, and he makes it look easier then it really is, but I quite like your new toy, where do I buy it? I’m a big student of the game, a Vet club player, and spend tons of time on the practice court, so love to tinker and try new things, please let me know.. cheers, Charlie

You'd need to add a lot of weight though. Maybe better using a vintage tennis racket and only stringing the centre strings.
