I managed to cut the top of my head off in this video but since my hair isn't super important to the subject matter, I decided not to redo the video. Hopefully it is not too distracting : ) This is a long video, so I have also created a link to an outline that summarizes everything discussed in the video and a few things I left out:

This was an enormously helpful bundle of tips and guidance on how to learn a piece. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and insight, and making this beautiful instrument with its rich tradition more accessible to everyone.

Laudon, this is a great video, thanks for putting this out there. I do have a general question for you regarding RH fingering. I find myself in sort of the middle ground of historically informed performance on the lute when it comes to RH fingering. I love ripping a good ol p-i scale and see advantages and differences in some cases, but when it comes to the more unique passages of music for the RH, generally speaking, I always prioritize my comfort level and RH efficiency (as my classical guitar teachers called it) on the lute. Meaning, I hesitate to get into weird crossing just to make sure I play "m" on the strong beat. I tell myself, I can play "i" strongly if I want to, and think about doing so. Same could be said for a weak beat. If "m" is sitting right over the string, it feels easier and more controlled to just play it with "m" rather than hopping "i" around just be "historically correct." How do you handle situations with weird leaps for the RH, is it worth adhering historically informed fingering for strong/weak beats?

Hi Neal! I think that is a great question. I used to be a zealot when it came to right hand fingering and position but if you look at sources like Folger or Thomas Robinson's "Schoole of Musicke," etc. Really anything with more detailed right hand indications than just the usual index dots, you start to notice that they were using a lot more nuance than we tend to give them credit for, especially when trying to avoid weird crossings. Robinson is interesting because he considers anything that is an upstroke (I, m, a) a "weak" stroke so you see some very interesting RH fingerings with him. What I think it boils down to is this: the simple, accent-based fingering system (P and I, with M on chords) is the best place for beginners to start but it shouldn't be a mindless system that we paste onto the music. There are passages all over the repertoire that call for more nuance and I think the idea is to deviate from the accent-based system for those moments that call for it, and then pop back in. It will definitely be a topic for one of my future videos on more advanced right hand techniques! : ) I hope that helps a little! Cheers, Laudon

@@laudonschuett3019 This does help, many thanks for you insights here. I'm glad to hear those sources provide some context for the more nuanced situations. I will be looking at those mss sources for sure. You describe my situation well, I started with P and I, with M on chords as a beginner, but I eventually ended up in some situations where I thought to myself, "there is just no way this makes sense anymore..."(mindless system I'd pasted onto the music). I very much appreciate your thoughts on deviation when truly needed, while still utilizing them both. Is there a specific repertoire you play most, or are most fond of?

@@nealzshipe I really love almost anything Renaissance. My biggest problem is stopping myself from jumping around too much! I am down to the one lute so that helps, but I would love to change that LOL : ) Gun to my head, if I had to choose, I would probably go with the English repertoire from John Johnson on and then the amazing fantasies of Albert de Rippe. Those could sustain me on a desert island. But again, I really like most of it!

Learn how to tune the thing, at least two or three times a day. And thén, if you have time left, practice.

Yeah, that’s true 😂 that is why it is very important to be efficient with your practice
