Additionally, the plastic container we keep our prepared slides inside in order to prevent them from getting dried up is full of Arthrobotrys now! Apparently some spores ended up on the wet cotton and started to grow and infest our other slides! It's like a horror movie but this time I actually enjoy watching it. 👻 -James

I've always been curious what imagery one could produce with a light field microscope. Those Lytro cameras could choose a depth of field after the fact. Which makes me wonder if one could produce an image showing a microbiome slide in complete focus, rather than rely on what the operator chooses as a focal point.
@theodorostsilikis4025
@theodorostsilikis4025 4 года назад
it would require multiple frames of different depth focus to compose one.this has to happen very fast to cancel any movement of the sample and those microbes move really fast.But in theory it would be amazing to accomplish it because the composed frame has depth information and could be stored as a 3d one.
@frtls
@frtls 4 года назад

As a biocontrol phytonematologist, this is my area of research. It is amazing how looking to nature for solutions almost always works out. Synthetic means as a solution has always proved to have a boomerang effect. That's why now we can study how parasites such as nematode population have been controlled by microbial antagonists and how we can amplify this effect in crop protection research

A similar species called Dudingtonia flagrans has been developed for use in livestock dietary supplements. The spores are mixed in the feed, germinating in the manure and destroying the parasitic larvae in situ before they mature and climb the pasture to infect a new animal host. A wonderful idea for a product which is still too uncommon and expensive to actually be used on a practical scale yet. Perhaps many more species are able to be used in this way such as Arthrobotrys, we could see a big game changer in parasite control if this technology was more widely applied and affordable.
