well, look where it took place...penalty spot, the dot. He mistook(i used translator, sorry for grammar) the ball with penalty dot, I think there's interview where he said about that , or he just lose his attention :D

He just mistook the white patch of the penalty spot for the ball, an optical illusion. Perfect example of our weakness in peripheral vision + how we actually see in 2D but our brain interpret things as 3D.
