I actually think it is awful they are sponsored by Mercedes. Come on, we need them to BURN any team if they deserve that. No holding back whatsoever because of a partnership. This is what conflict of interest looks like.
“No we don’t take no L’s (Charles DNF in France). Spend 5k on the gold and 15k on the pearls, no we don’t take no L’s (Leclerc DNF in Bahrain). Yeah we don’t take no L’s (Charles gets a grid penalty in Jeddah)”. And so on. 😂
I was so gutted for Piastri after the safety car. He did amazing and really deserved that rookie podium. Hope he gets another chance this season, But he definitely showed that he is worthy of that seat. I don’t know how much difference the extra upgrades on Norris’ car are worth, but he stayed close to Norris throughout the entire race. Major props to McLaren, let’s hope they can keep it up.
And he finished within a second of Hamilton. He didn't give Russell a single chance to attack. Few more laps and he could have attacked Hamilton I think; although Hamilton could have been pulling back in the end seeing he has no chance at P2 once Norris started pulling away.
Piastri impressed significantly and I’m happy to admit I was wrong about him. He held his own at the sharp end of the grid and really was on track for a podium before that SC
It’s definitely very impressive that he kept up just because he’s so new to F1, but the difference between their cars for this particular race has been heavily overstated. The only extra upgrade Norris had for this race was the front wing, based on everything I’ve seen/heard it can’t be worth more than a few hundredths, at most a tenth.
@@armadillolover99I agree, but let it be a tenth and his gap to Norris on Silverstone would have been just 3 hundreds. Piastri might be the best rookie since Verstappen. For me, he is at least up there with the likes of Leclerc, Russel and Norris
I'm a bit concerned about their creative freedom now that they're being sponsored by a team, whichever one it might be. I wouldn't want M&T to end up back in a similar position they were in the last few months of wtf1, just of their own making this time
@@illbeV I think if they saw outside influence, they would rather leave a sponsor than change their own mentality. They seemed to be doing fine the last few months without Mercedes, so I'm sure if need be, they would rather sack their sponsor than to lose freedom.
@@illbeV I think it's only for this weekend - they spent the race at the Mercedes hospitality, presumably in return for the mention on the channel. They did a similar thing with Red Bull at Monaco a few races ago.
@@duuudde12no part of that sounds pretty nice lol. Verstappen winning everything is just boring, love him or hate him. From a fan's perspective, no point having an exciting aggressive wheel to wheel racer like Verstappen in the sport if he's going to win by 30 seconds each race.
Every qualy is exciting. This race was not an easy 1 to win for rb and i like seeing mv win. Even more important he won in the UK. The english booh are a disgrace but i think that is only talked about when the dutch fans misbehave.
@@EdNeaton there a driver who has won every race in a season? I don't know any so it would be a pretty nice feat in the end even though it would be pretty boring
It was like the whole attendance were trying to agree in an unified curse and failed. They should have taken a page from Top Gear: "VERSTAPPEN, YOU PILLOCK!"
Everyone keeps talking about Lando's start (which was amazing) but what about Oscar. If you look carefully at the start, Oscar pulled up right next to Max which delayed Max slightly allowing Lando to get away. Oscar was incredible and my heart broke when the safety car came out.
I've been a McLaren fan for 20 years or more now. We've had a rough few years, 2020 and 2021 started to look good but I think now we are starting to see a genuine McLaren resurgence
Surely it's utterly misleading, both Aston Martin and Ferrari didn't show up, add Perez's failure to deliver again and it looks more like McLaren just got lucky.
So gutted for Piastri. He stayed on Lando’s pace for the whole race and was so unlucky with the safety car. I hope McLaren didn’t just fluke it for one race and he gets his podium soon!
For real, also with how Lewis was losing pace if he just had a few more corners it could have very possibly been p3 even with that luck with the safety car
I'm in the US. What exactly did they do on this Stage? Are there any clips. They just talked about being there, but not a lot of detail about what they did.
Loved y’all’s faces when y’all realized how many people came to see you at the GP. It’s a pleasure to watch good people earn their fame and appreciation, especially when they’re sincere about thanking their audience for helping them get there. Y’all are some good dawgs.
Regarding Bernd Maylander and Track Limits, on the german broadcast the commentators joked about how track limits don‘t apply to touring cars or else there wouldn‘t have been any cars in the Porsche Super Cup after 4 laps because they all took the corners where possible like that 😂
Matt! I met you and Tommy at the box on Sunday, was a pleasure to meet you both, I knew you guys were going to be there but my flight got delayed so when I finally got there on Sunday I had forgotten and you guys were super nice and loud! Was so funny seeing you guys lose your minds when Lando jumped max. Take care man.
I was at the British GP all weekend, and it was absolutely amazing. Watching from the Luffield grandstand as Bottas broke down in front of me in quali, joining in the banshee shrieks as Lando took provisional pole for a few seconds and led off the line at the start, attending the P1 Podcast Live from the main stage, seeing Ferrari Ferrari up Charles's race from the grandstand opposite pit entry at Vale, celebrating podiums for Lewis and Lando and points for Alex, joining in the track invasion post-race and getting to walk on the track and see the pit lane where champions have fought and raced for 75 years now. It is an experience I will never ever forget.
You guys were fantastic and I was shocked that you guys were the announcers asking us to get our tickets ready and to have a great day 😂😂 I'm so pleased for you guys, keep it up lads!!!
When I was watching the Spanish commentary of the Grand Prix, they explained that McLaren had a lot of degradation in the soft tyres during practice, which is why they put hards on
I think we're legitimately seeing the new regulations do what they were meant to do. The competitiveness between the teams now is really good and over half of them have a podium. The regulations just failed to account for Verstappen
Yeah it's an amazing season so far, sure Verstappen walks away with the championship, but everyone behind him are swapping places like crazy at the moment
Ah, the sound of Matt and Tommy's voices. I feel it's now ingrained in some Pavlovian response that I should get the ticket up on my phone, and get my bag searched
I make no secret of it that I would love to see Max smash every single existing record, but if Lando had won the race I would have been in peace with it. For dry conditions it was a good race, and the new rules are starting to show the effect.
I don’t think McLaren putting on hards was the wrong option. When they pitted there was 19 laps left, but when the race restarted there were only 14. Dr Marko said after the race that 5 more laps and Lando would have caught Max, so maybe at the time it was the best tire to be on
I'm not really Lando's fan but I'll give him the driver of the year so far award. Imagine if we could have him in that second RB. And yes, the moment I saw Maylander going off I automatically thought: "5 seconds for track limits! "
The cool down room podcast idea is fantastic!!!! I would love to see a former driver like maybe Riccardo maybe and do a 5 minute post race conversation in a podcast like format. 😳🙏
I think we all thought the same about the hards on McLaren, but we also all have to admit that IF the McLaren fires up the front tires as fast and as well as the commentators think they do, the hards probably saved them from cooking those softs into oblivion. Mediums were by far the best tires in Silverstone. After 3 laps everyone was complaining about how softs were overheating and 2 laps was all it took for McLaren to put those hards into a driveable temperature, just in time for DRS, that probably saved them from an attack from both Mercedes at the later stage of the race. I do wholeheartedly believe everyone on the grid got their hopes up when they saw Russell driving 30 laps on the soft tire while staying within 5-6 seconds from McLaren in the first half the race, putting them under the impression that soft tires were faster than hards even if they were to babysit them. So, looking at it from another perspective, they only had 2 real choices: - Use the softs, being safe through the SC restart but under severe pressure on the later stage of the race due to how much babysitting the softs would need or; - Use the hards, suffer through the first few laps while nobody had DRS and pray that the data from free practice stayed true on how long it'd take to make the hards viable. With all that said, Stella gave everyone the reason why they put hards on both cars (iirc it had something to do with the softs not being ready or something along those lines/issues), so all these discussions are ultimately worthless. Using Lando's words, it worked, so who cares.
I’ll just say we know the hards were not the wrong call for McLaren. Remember that they pitted under the VSC, so Lando would’ve had a buffer to warm them up.
4:55 - yeah, Sainz forgot what even the strategy was at some point, over the radio! "Can you pelase remind me what the plan B was?" :D 8:10 - It's amazing with what confidence they made the hard tyre call. Both drivers - no whining. No trace of doubt. Not doing a gamble one driver soft, the other hard. They knew.
And so on. 😂
I said this elsewhere, but if there is even a smidge of a chance that Max gets DSQ’ed from the whole year, that will completely reshape the dynamic of this year from a Verstappen bore test to a truly EPIC all out brawl between drivers and teams! That’s just how good this battle for second is!
@@greatsageclok-roo9013 The only chance that Max is getting DSQed is if he decides to emulate Michael Schumacher in 1997 and take out his rivals in order to win - which he doesn't need to do cos he's winning already.
@@abigailcooling6604 Imagine if he did it just to keep his winning streak going. I mean, how much of a sore loser do you have to be to deliberately try to take out a rival racer just to ensure you keep your winning streak when you don't need to?
@@greatsageclok-roo9013 I wasn't suggesting Max was actually going to do it, I think he's above those sorts of dirty tactics. Schumacher only did it in a failed attempt to win a championship in the final race of the season, while Max has no need to do something like that in order to win.
@@abigailcooling6604 Well, we have seen Max do reckless/selfish things when he didn't need to before, so... Well, let's wait and see if anything happens. (Probably not.)
One thing I don’t understand why lando blocked oscar at the start. Yes he would have lost position, said so himself in cool down room. But surely having two cars infront of max would have outweighed that negative
I don't know much about tyre strategies yet, but I think hard tyres were a bit of risky or something maneuver. In my opinion, they may be thinking about going on longer if let's say Verstappen pits. But luckily with hard defending of Lando against Hamilton, the hards were obviously difficult but they were suitable to take the hard beating of defence. That's my take.
Given how many laps most cars were able to get out of the mediums, I thought they would be the easy choice for McLaren. Of course, the softs would have lasted as well, but if you wanted to play it cautious, the mediums were sure to last and it seems like they had pretty decent pace. There just seemed to me to be NO reason to go on hards. According to Andrea Stella after the race (or someone in the McLaren camp), the hards were chosen because I guess they had already prepared them for the pit stop and they didn't want to change compounds at the last minute which could have caused a problem. But then that begs the question why they were planning on going to the hards for the last stint anyway, especially since they kept asking Lando how long he could keep the pace up (which, again, is kinda a dumb thing to ask your driver) until finally Lando told them "I'll tell you when it changes." It's like they expected to pit him much earlier and then go onto the hards to finish the race, but NEVER changed their strategy after Lando stayed out. It's baffling. And then Zak Brown reiterates in a post-race interview that the hards were "the right choice of tire." No, they weren't. In no reality whatsoever were the hards ever the right choice of tire at that point in time. But for me, the bigger mistake was pitting Piastri as early as they did. The broadcast crew even mentioned before the start of the race that there's an 80-something percent chance of a safety car at Silverstone, so why the hell were they not trying to get as much out of those tires as possible until a potential safety car? Don't get me wrong, I know at some point you have to cut your losses and just pit already, but Piastri was not losing significant pace, he did not have to pit that early. And Hamilton's garage were banking on a safety car, just like a smart team would do. Hamilton himself said they were just going to run those tires to the end if they didn't get one. Why was McLaren, who was ahead of Hamilton at that point, not already thinking the same thing? It's utterly baffling. This is like the Sprint Race in Austria, when Hulkenberg finished P6 and everyone was congratulating Haas on making the decision to switch to slicks early. But he did it a full lap after Russell did and was on the radio telling the engineer that he thought the track was ready for slicks while his engineer tried to talk him out of it for almost 2 whole laps right before they changed their minds and pitted him. Hulkenberg could have finished ahead of Stroll if he had pitted just a single lap sooner. I don't understand why these struggling backmarker teams aren't jumping on these obvious advantages they can get by taking just a slight bit more risk. They're so enamored with any points at all that they overlook the possibility for better results and throw away points in the process. I love rooting for backmarker teams, but these missed opportunities are frustrating to watch. Lando finished just under 4 seconds behind Max. Other than Hamilton in Australia, this was the closest margin that ANYONE had finished behind Max all season (including the races that Max didn't win). I don't know that mediums or even softs would have changed that too much, but it would have given him a better shot for sure, and the gap probably would have been lessened if only because of the decreased amount of time required to get the tires into their optimum temperature window. I'm not even a Lando fan (although that was a HELL of a drive by him), but it would have been great to see what he could have done with better tires. What a waste. Edit: Because I confused the Austria race results with the Austria Sprint Race results.
First you must know that every car has to use two different tire compounds in the race. So if Lando was on the mediums he has change to hard or softs because he had not changed tires until that point in the race. Second McLaren made the right call because Mercedes was good on their tires and didn’t pit just like RedBull but McLaren is harder on the tires so they believed the softs would be spent within 9 laps on Lando’s car and Lewis could catch him in the remaining 5 laps. McLaren call worked so what if Lando had to work harder to keep Lewis behind - Lando was not catching Max on softs even he had softs.
McLaren *is* a loveable team. The CEO is a bit of a tosser, u fortunately. Why is Andrea Stella _not_ the face of the McLaren pit wall? Zak Brown sucking up all the oxygen is a bit annoying. I want to hear from the Team Principal, not the suits from the head office. Even so, I'm _still_ excited for McLaren.
I remember Matt saying, he used to absolutely love watching Schumacher win GP's all the time when he was a kid. So for some of us, we love watching Max win, why do you always downplay his efforts and hardwork, look at Perez where is he finishing, you should at least not diminish Max's efforts by saying ah he won again, he always wins. And don't forget the hardwork each individual did in Red Bull factory to make that car possible, its not only Adrian Newey. Dont forget all those people's efforts. Its a team game, even if you don't see it as one. Lewis dominated for 7 years, but this new DTS fans don't know about it.
I think Sainz experienced the heart-breaking event Leclerc had last year trying to fight with used hard after a safety car restart. Also, is no one gonna talk about how Sainz said he forgot what plan B is? A prime example of why labeling to plan G does nothing, unless plan G is your only plan.
I definitely think the hards were a good choice, the McLaren seems to eat tyres up and I think lando would have lost a lot of time and maybe even the position to Hamilton due to the degredation if he was on softs
The Mclaren lights up their tyres really quickly (compared to other teams) so I think Mclaren were confident that the hard would work for them, better than others. But on the flipside it also chews through their tyres really quick so I think it would've been a matter of either try and defend from Hamilton after the restart or defend from a Hamilton charge at the end of the race. I don't think Lando would have been able to attack Max with the softs cause they would have been too concerned about trying to prolong tyre life.
I think I’ve got the same condition Matt. N.V.B.O.L (No voice because of Lando) is a nasty bugga. See you’ve got a nice bit of sunburn like me 😂. Nice to see you and Tommy at Silverstone, keep up the good work 🎉
I think on softs Lando would have also finished p2, so it didnt really matter which tyre he would have fitted, for Oscar though with softs maybe he could have attacked lewis because the pace was there he should have tried
Awesome stuff - Glad you guys made the big stage! That's incredible. I imagine a bump in numbers from that. Tommy's tweet - that is gold! I laughed uncontrollably that one. Dont do twitter or memes - but if I did, the perfect one (as a lowly HAAS fan) it would be a screenshot of Hulks front wing end plate flying off and underneath that great one of Bottas kicking back a beer captioned " It'sTradition" ....
Having you two on stage is the way it should be. Instead of a grid full of celebrities who seem wholly uninterested in the cars, drivers, or talking to Brundle during the pre-race. Two genuine F1 fans, cheered by a mob of F1 fans. Glorious.
An incredible weekend for the boys at Brixworth, if not particularly awesome for their colleagues at Brackley. Of the eight cars carrying a Mercedes engine at Silverstone, SIX of them earned points. Am I really the only one to notice this?
Genuine question: if Twitter dies or falls out of favor, will you still call this series as "Funniest Tweets" or will you have to go with something like "Tastiest Threads"
i just fell it was the binotto effect. i mean in the race he pops his head back in, the team moves back from somewhere in the front to strapping points from the barrel.
