The future of Carbon wheels is disposable - The new Mavic Cosmic Ultimate 45

My debate in the future of wheel tech, the one piece carbon wheels made famous by lightweight, now have a copycat. The Mavic Cosmic Ultimate 45 Disc vs the Lightweight Meilenstein EVO. The weight difference alone is staggering, 125g! The same as 4 Kendal Mint Cake Bars.
Is this the future of all road bike wheels? will ZIPP and ENVE follow?

I love all the new engineering and new thought patterns, but have to admit that I draw the line where something isn't repairable. As you mentioned, there then becomes a problem with all of this carbon laying around somewhere, but it also comes to mind that if you are serious about racing...then you need at least a couple of pairs of wheels like this to race. The last piece of this puzzle is that you are only making product for a very small portion of cyclists... and that in addition to being not repairable is total waste of time.

I have dealt with one other wheelset like this - Madfiber. They came in to our shop 5mm out of true laterally - normally not a problem with proper spokes. After an extensive back and forth between myself and Madfiber they ended up giving our customer a new wheel… that’s why the price is so high.

Glad they have released something top of the line, and slashed prices while at it, though. The "disposability" isn't necessarily such a huge deal, because CF is tough and durable if made well and if those spokes end up mostly outliving the rim itself I don't see a big issue. I have Mavic Crossmax and Crrossmax LTD jerseys. I had Crossmax , but found some at 70% sale so got more. The jersey was quite durable. Alpinestars jerseys I had all split at the neck, chest area, got a V shape. Mavic never did, apart from color fading and some wear on the mest in the armpit area it still is in great shape, great weave too. But with wrist braces they rub some, so wear them a bit more, so so would anything else, same if you wear torso guard. But great fit, durability. I wear EU Medium, have 55mm length arms, they fit well, neck opening is not too big, fits well. I used L with Alpinestars, XL with fox, If it was not for too short sleeves L would fit, So with Fox I have to use XL. I recently got Medium Endura Singletrack II, the fit is great, but sleeves are longer than anything else I have, even when reaching up it still covers my wrist and more. I had a Mavic helmet before, it was quite comfy, and light, and cheap, and adjustment dial did not get destroyed, but the helmet had to be retired. only thing that broke was the liner that separated, and the buckle under the ear that snapped, but that snapped after I retired it I think. But it served me well for few years. But I have been using full face helmets since then.

But I don't own a shop nor looked at everyone's bikes. Buy based on secondhand market DT Swiss dominates. Kind of wonder what the point is - these aren't lighter then asian brands that come in at 1/4th the price that use more traditional wheel design. I also think its great to push the limits of engineering - but only if you're getting a marginal benefit over everything else. Being that these are not light, and their inner rim width seems to go against the trend of the industry, I'm not sure what performance gain is being had at this price.

I have heard from a carbon repair expert that once you break a spoke on these, they go into the bin because the spoke needs to cure while in tension, which is already very hard to do and there isn't anywhere to attach a new spoke, because it was originally attached on the inside of the rim. On the other hand though, maybe ironically, companies go this route because it's simpler to design than a reliable carbon spoke to metal nipple interface. I know wheels with replaceable carbon spokes exist, I own a pair in fact. Mavic won't just copy it, because they know they can't compete with Chinese manufacturers that are using this design.

Seems like manufacturers aren't really conscious of the impact such decisions will have (on the environment, consumer's,...). They are already priced for the very fortunate thankfully which will limit volumes. Also, more and more buyers today are beginning to understand carbon fiber can't be easily recycled. Bontrager Aeolus RSL 51's are sub 1400grams and cost at least 1000 pounds less! And you can service them all throughout not to mention lifetime warranty! And RSL 37'S are 1325grams... I'm sure more good options out there...

Truly the antithesis of the wheels I just built. Mavic CXP Elite rims, old school width and profile, and made in Romania! I trust the DT spokes to not all snap simultaneously and the hubs use off the shelf bearings. With 100kg of timber, I'd likely be amongst the first casualties claimed by those carbon rims. Not rim brake, not retro, through axle on known mediocre hubs. Peak Torque reviewed a set of Winspace carbon spoked wheels and was surprised how laterally stiff they were. He also was impressed by how harshly they rode. I have recycled aluminum rims, but these are not at all, regardless of how many 🎄 were saved in the packaging!

@@Mapdec Ok, I read up on all tubeless tapes sold in Norway, I've also checked out European retailers, will check out what others have, so my conclusion is they all are bad. Atleast if going by the non user error reviews. But I see some retailers sell a blue 3M tape, they just call it 3M Tubeless Tape. Not seen any retailer list the tape product name from 3M. I am sure it's not 3M Tubeless Tape. What I read about Effetto: afhisive failures, does not stick. About Schwalbe, Continental, Muc Off, they might be made by same factory, same flaws, same plastic roll, adhisive failure, tears easily, does not stick well, too dry adhisive, I experienced this with Schwalbe tape, I gave up. I can't have my tyr elose all air due to tape failure. And removing tiny bits of tape with my nails, pliers is absurd. Gorilla tape is not optimal needs a ride to seal up, the tape has holes in it if I out it up to the light I can see trough it. But it's strong, and lasts long. If carefully removed before it wears too much it leaves minimal residue but many do it the brutal and fast way resulting in massive sections of residue. But so fsr I've not found a tape that I even want to try. But don't want to stick with Gorilla tape, it was a temporary solution that kept going for years. I found something bad about all the tapes I researched that were in stock. I will look into other tapes and see what's available around the world. But limited fopyions in Norway, too wide, too narrow, tapes ths ti know are bad, or gorilla tape, but now i can buy Gorilla Tape locally anyway so it's easy to get. I found reviews in a retailer for the 3M Tubeless Tape, "lost it several places, comes off". Some wrote it works a sit should. So far I've checked out most Norwegian retailers, some German ones like bike components, looked at wiggle too. I will chceknou tother retailers i have a bookmark collection of many retailers. But will check out the common ones first.

@@Mapdec how was your experience with it? Why choose it over others? I need something better than Gorilla Tape but not tear or failing afhisive. I don't know if a tape that I would approve of exists. Maybe I will check out the mtbr post about tubeless tapes again see whay I forgot to look into.

Any thoughts on alloy wheels instead of carbon on rim brakes? What about on disc brake bikes recommendation? Alloy or carbon? Whats your recommendation for all around internal external width for road/gravel?
@Mapdec
@Mapdec Год назад
Where we live Carbon rims and rim brakes are a big no! They warp, and fail from heat under long hard braking. I like disc brakes mainly because it opens up a world of opportunities with wheel choice, width, diameter, construction etc. Most internal rim widths start at 19mm. 21mm is getting very common and works really well with 28c tyres.

It might be a useless gesture, but I went with an aluminum frame and alloy wheels for my new build, partly for cost, but mostly because of the question raised in the video.
