It’s hard to imagine a future for college that isn’t touched by the ongoing digital revolution. But the disruption coming to higher education may not be what we expect. On-line courses may well transform how universities deliver knowledge, but economists say digital learning isn’t likely to replace universities entirely.
In a world where technology is upending jobs and industries at an ever-faster pace, graduates may need to retrain and learn new skills long after they’ve received their diplomas. This could mean colleges may become more necessary than ever, but only if they rethink the time spent there as a single stage of life.
That’s why institutions like Georgia Tech are betting on a future where schools welcome back students throughout their careers, helping them stay competitive in a job market that’s transforming faster all the time.

Perfectly articulated. Realistically, college is a relic that is preserved by companies requirements for a 4 year degree. If the employment market was meritocratic, most bloated colleges with their legions of tenured administration staff would disappear overnight. The only reason I pay tuition is because I get a piece of paper. Everything I learned in college I essentially taught myself anyway from the book. The teachers never helped me and most of the diversity admits slide by with a C anyway and end up plaguing the job markets, making the working world an eroding hellscape of incompetence.

That is an interesting idea. Academia outside the USA, in Great Britain and Germany for example, do end general education classes earlier in a student's curriculum. This does force students to choose what they want for their professional studies at a younger age.

@@Qznews The role of primary and secondary education should help young people find their path. Why are so many high school students bored in all their classes? Because it's all a chore. No interests. If they knew what they wanted to do in high school higher education wouldn't be a waste of time and money.

Quartz (qz.com) is a very large media outlet. They get 22 million page visits a month. They might not have a huge RU-vid presence, but that's like saying PewDiePie has a small Tumblr presence; it isn't his primary outlet.

I hate this stat about people not finishing their online courses. I admit that I have probably finished 4% of online courses I have take. This does not mean that I haven't gained a ton from learning online. Excluding mathematics, I have probably learned more online during my computer science degree than I have in a classroom. The reason for this deflated figure is because these courses are so accessible that I can enroll in them for only the information I need. Furthermore, if I find that a course is either not useful or poorly taught, I stop and find another one. Unfortunately, I can't do this in my university courses.

The future of college - it seems- is that education should be ongoing. Sure, pursue a degree and get a job, but also be ready to be flexible over time to keep learning and adding skills as industries change and evolve. As for gathering information on the internet, this is a good option for those who are autodidact. Perhaps, sometimes it is best to get training directly from accredited institutions or experts. What do you think @Aniket Sahu?

@Quartz But, you need a job to get a job. I heard most employers care mostly about work experience in the field, not the GPA you get at college. That means the best place to learn the required work skills is by working in industry, not studying at college. I also know that 90 percent of what is taught in college is not useful for real jobs. That’s why a lot of college students are doing internships in addition to college as college doesn’t really teach the required job skills.

@Quartz If colleges focused on useful practical knowledge instead of rot memorization of theory before exams, students would have no reason to go for internships to get the required experience, and everybody would stand to benefit.

in my opinion we need both. Not just one. Recording of the physical along with recording of topics that are taught in classes. Teacher shares their insight in physical classes which are invaluable.

My question is of the richest and brightest minds ever lived, most of what they learn't is self-knowledge, not from swatting and regurgitating the same thing for a mere test and forgetting it seconds after the test.

While this can work in some fields like Tech, other fields this model would not work. For example, the field of surgery would not fit. Do not want random people with no education cutting into other people with no guidance or supervision!!

@@Ruffles2012 So? In Europe people skip regular college and immediately go into medical school. It works for them. Yeah, for certain fields like surgery people should have to go to school, but you shouldn't need a degree just to be a receptionist or secretary, etc.

Why are there no standard, widely accepted alternatives to university education? Why does the university model have monopoly status in the United States (and probably elsewhere, especially in the Western world)? And why are instruction and certification so often inextricably linked? Why aren't there institutions that specialize in either teaching or accreditation but not both?

Like this video just explained everything that am doing right now,the thing that people around me just don't get please share this video guys...am 24 with a bachelor's of science in accounting, I actually go to work to save up for Georgia tech $ 9000 masters programme for analytics at the same time pursuing another certificate for data science edx Micromasters MIT to get a pHD in social science at the same time learning coding with CS50...I live in Kenya and everyone is just confused about this plan,but I keep telling them the future lies in the hands of the people who can learn and relearn using MOOCS.

The biggest problem with online education is that public and established physical universities have the edge. To be accredited and allow your students access to financial aid and PELL grants, 50% of your classes have to have a physical class. There is no 'pre-accreditation' for online schools, you need millions of extra dollars to give smart students free school to become accredited (you need smart students so you get good hiring percentages, needed to become accredited.) Law and Medicine, Forget it! The US doesn't allow it. You'd need better lobbyists than Uber (I couldn't start a nationwide taxi service that rarely buys taxi medallions, but they did it.) I could start a school that charges community college rates for all the way up to doctoral classes, pay teachers far more than they get, create better opportunities for students than most schools; and still become a billionaire (but I'd need capital and lobbyists.) The only thing the school would not compete with major universities would be research, that's where a lot of your tuition goes; a research project you get nothing from (you can't even go in the room if you're not one of the researchers.) I wrote a 27 page business model (I don't waste words) before finding out how hard it would be to get access to PELL grants (which basically let the student go to school free if it's community college prices, they may even get some left over.)

Except the best online programs to get accredidated from cost a lot. For example, Harvard's online degree cost like 7k a semester. Not much cheaper than some public school

Ruffles2012 no one cares about the degrees anymore and it will become even worse later on... people will have to prove their worth with independent portfolios & experience. ( if you don’t work on your own and take initiative, you don’t deserve working in that field - on the exception of a few select fields ) Samuel, quality education won’t be free, but it will however become a lot cheaper such as memberships under 300$/month or a couple thousand dollar courses etc.

@@Qznews Not Victor, but obviously Medical and Law degrees do require a college. I think MOOCs are more than adequate platforms for CS or any other STEM students.

It depends on the course. Medicine and other sciences absolutely need a lab to train in, you cant do that at home. Art and fashion would probably be done best on-site as well . But other subjects, like some humanities, can surely be done online.

The Arts absolutely does not need the university to introduce itself to curious learners. Most people in the arts goes to festivals, exhibitions, and galleries where they're in a community of artists that can mentor and teach them some tricks of the trade. Some artists offer classes themselves, which is sorta like a really small academia, but it's not established like a university. One doesn't even need any mentors to learn, they can learn from the plethora of youtube videos, vimeo videos, articles, and websites on how to be an artist. Your portfolio and demo reel are your credentials, not a piece of paper.

i took a cs class online and i absolutely struggled the lack of being able to stop the instructor and ask a question makes understanding the concepts way harder being able to talk to a expert and have them help you understand is the only reason i go to class

You need a GOOD math professor. You can love or hate a math subject based on your teacher. I loved my algebra 2 professor because she dumbed everything down. I loved my trig class because my professor allowed us to use a formula sheet, unit circle and identity sheet for exams.

As a german I am so used to college, university and also retraining between jobs beeing free that I find it difficult to understand the US american approach to having people pay for their education. Why would you ask somebody to pay for a service that will enable him to be a more productive member of society right in a situation where he or she can least afford it? To me it seems educating people for free is a good bargain for society and also for the german state in the long run because people can be productive much faster and will be able to contribute through their taxes and jobless insurance payments.

I applied for Minerva years ago but didn't get in :/ sounds really interesting though and the most important to me about their model wasn't the live online classes but the fact that they put you in a city for away from your home town so you actually had to learn about different cultures and be out of your comfort zone.

That's a good point. You are correct, removing stigma is a dimension of the successful adaption of online courses. Perhaps as more and established institutions adopt the practice stigma will fade.

Lifelong learning is a general trend, it applies to everyone and everything not just colleges. A guy that learned how to screw in a screw decades ago is doomed, you can see that from growing 50+ age group unemployment, some of those don't even know how to write an email and once laid off have no way to enter the job market again. Not as much of a problem in the US because there's always work but salaries went down for sure.

I graduate 1985 with a psychology degree and was in field which hated it. 1995 majored in electronics and networking which I enjoyed today. Today the new technology is voip voice over ip phones. Keep learning. Downey California

it is an economical education business world, We are facing a qualification degree booming age. They could be selling it to you as a product, you will complete a qualification degree fast enough, if you got enough money and good relationships. It does not mean you could handle your work.

The problem that I see with college is the added costs. Sure, you might see a class at $500 per credit hour but the book is another couple hundred dollars and added software, and the professor’s added text all increase that cost

so what was the gist, is it good or is it bad? my understanding is that it is good for the society to constantly be getting higher-educated professionals, but people don't live forever, and young people don't get jobs which someone else can do better (which in this case would be the same thing as older). besides, nobody wants an automated life, and being caught up in a system which asks that you sign a contract to work for them your whole life sounds good as a kid, but it gets harder and harder as life goes on, limiting how financially independant you really are.

Why is the state of our society and the way it's heading "scary?" 7:35 Why is it unfortunate that we have to keep retooling ourselves? 7:45 Education has always been a continuous pursuit. It's exciting there is a driving force behind personal/professional growth. Engage and succeed or step aside. It's an incredible time to be alive. We have the ability and opportunity to reach for our wildest dreams. I'm a dad and R&D engineer. I will encourage my son to learn programming, machining, design, welding, dance, music, art etc etc etc. Acquire skills that have utility and showcase them to the world creatively; in a way that adds value to those around you and the world.

The important point that can be inferred from the video is that the pace at which technology is changing, the knowledge earned in a defined duration degree is not going to serve you for the entirety of life. You need to keep learning to keep up and these online courses or programs are the way to go.

@@Qznews Income-Sharing Agreements are 10x better than the current system. Higher Education Business Model: students pay a ton of money (120k) upfront with no guarantee of employment Income-Sharing Agreement: students pay nothing upfront and only pay if they get a job after college (20% of Income) It aligns incentives and holds higher education accountable to deliver employment, in order to get paid. Salespeople at universities shouldn't focus on recruiting students, they should focus on recruiting employers.

What is equity? i went to Kaplan Online. i graduated during the Lehman Bros shock. There were no programming jobs available in Nagoya at the time, having JLPT 2 （before the pre-levels and N-levels. ）was not enough. i worked with 60 year old who lost his job with a trading company due to 9-11. i've worked for 15 years in Japan. i would be a fish out of water in my home country. My wife pays the bills, i don't mind being a house husband. My brother-in-law has been one while between jobs.

Degree is a waste of time. And the education system is already failing as you can see. Students dont want to go to college at all. They want just the acute knowledge not the lumpsum course that has been set out of which only 10 to 15% is useful in real life. And yeah education system just creates workers nothing else. It was designed that way by the large corporates so that no critical thinking can be developed in young minds. And yeah if these great teachers are saying that yup degree is necessery in life then why havent they become a millionair by now atleast if they were that confident. In short its a scam and you will be always stuck in the rat race by yourself. Wake up and take real experance from the movers and makers from your field of interest. Meet people, make them your mentor, even work with them for free if you have too if you can gain knowledge with from them and then make your way up. Cause this single piece of paper doesnt define you or say what you are capable of. So rise up and make it to another life you want to live on your terms not the societies. Trust me, I'm a millionaire not like these teachers who say things without proving themselves and i know hundreds of people in my city who are rolling on high stakes and havent even graduated from high school.

well I paid enough that you should owe something to me for the rest of my life other than those personal attacks whenever I went in due to depression. Collages are filled with people who think they are fine with attacking you emotionally because they believe themselves to be better than their customers. I had a counselor, who I went to due to depression, attack me personally saying it was all my fault not the school's and i was just an idiot who did not belong in collage. I almost committed suicide, thankfully my friends were there to get me out of my depression

as i have done my bachelors in electrical engineering from nepal, our courses has not changes since 1980s, and from that time the world has changed a lot but except for our course which is just the same with no practical education. And the irony is most of my friends who are graduate even don't know the meaning of programming or coding. So, courses has to be changed.

The future of work isn't stagnant, you will need to keep re-educating in order to stay relevant. Upending your life for another 3 years at a time just to stay relevant isn't going to be a viable solution, especially in today's economy. Colleges can either embrace that or be left behind by all the other alternatives that will come out to fill the void they don't want to. If they fail to meet this gap then the marketing behind college (exclusivity and a name to put behind your education) will largely become redundant. Possibly to the point to which we view high street to designer clothing, at the end of the day and for the most part, the only difference between a designer white T-shirt and a retail white T-shirt is the price.

Retail you it will disrupt the mainstream education, but innovation diffusion here suggest there is a need of a hybrid system I.e. 50:50 onsite:online. Eventually there will be no more visible educational institutes, we don’t need that infrastructure and environment for learning, things and though both has changed ! What didn’t is the habit or cliche.....

03:00 "If you do online right, it's not cheap". What did he mean? I don't think this was fully explained in the video, but it seemed interesting. I myself have taken a couple of MOOCs on computer science and music theory, and I've enjoyed them a lot, and they were free (got financial aid from coursera for a couple of them to get a certification, tho). Maybe he meant that creating a whole online bachelor degree with the same validity as a traditional one, in other fields different from computer science, would be really expensive? I'm not sure...

its kinda weird seing this being posted on youtube, or better on the internet, using existing material that is openly available and is not owned by anyone is how most are learning, sometimes its even part of the official "offline" curricula! Offcourse theres the stuff people just post online because they know something others dont and they want to show that, that is owned by the individual! But still, there exists so much stuff to learn from! Often times its the students who are not spoken about who are already living the future! Look, I am not saying there is an advantage over offline or online learning, but there is from a mobillity sense! I can not believe it that setting up a website is that hard where people can come to and learn, and are tested, maybe its okay if the data of students is not available in one place, videogames could save your data with just a code! If a student just has to submit a code, like QR, or a seemingly random sequence of numbers and letters, for the university to see all his progress in all its detail, why not? Sounds like it can save a lot money!
