I'm surprised no one here has mentioned JPEGMAFIA. He's been doing a healthy blend of Hip-Hop mixed with rock as well as DnB and blending really interesting samples, not to mention a lot of his earlier electronic type work.
just like rock was a regurgitated thing originated from blues, just like metal was a regurgitated thing originated from rock, just like hip hop was a regurgitated thing originated from soul and spoken words
I was thinking something similar. This sounds like early DnB. Which fits in the right timeframe. Like 92 ~ 97. Overall though, this particular cook-up sounds like Prodigy.
The only real way to get it to stand out is in how you approach it. Because at the surface level, yeah, you just have The Prodigy with a few extra layers. This is where it helps to get a little creative IMO. Hell, go cinematic with it if it means clarifying that you didn’t just recreate Voodoo People or Hotride and call it something else
@@NavieD I thing the idea of rap mixing with rock being weird shows how algo conservative things have gotten. Check the 90s Judgement Night sound track for the blueprint...Teenage Fan Club and De La Soul, Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill
Grunge is really already present for few years in mainstream hip hop in form of rage stuff. Yeat, pbc, ken carson, destroy lonely and others. Its kind digital version of grunge from 90s with less of organic sounding stuff.
the idea of combing rap and rock really was revived in the last 5-8 years with scream rap and then eventually trap metal, with artist like ZillKami and SosMula standing at the very front of it. I would love to see you do a breakdown on their more grungy sounding like "the give up" or "draino"
Love this. I think we need to go back to the 60-70's songwriting era. Emphasis on poetic lyrics, social commentary, soulful vocals, live instruments, etc. Please keep these coming.
100% agree, and as an artist who is trying to mix all of these aspects in my music, I can only hope more music incorporates aspects from 60s-70s songwriting
It's like you've been watching me. This video has given me so much inspiration to keep going with my music. Thanks for uploading. I named my indie record label after that Tribe Called Quest song you mentioned at the beginning. Excursions changed my life.
Im expecting a resurgence of jazzy/chill (easy listening) rap to come through again. I think similar to pharcyde coming through as a counter to the more agressive NWA sound. I expect something to come through that counters the harder drill sound that is dominating right now.
Tbh I recon it'll be a mix of both, the way were heading spiritually, politically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. I recon music gatekeeping is going to die as we move into a more free-roam society with all these century-old stereotypes falling down. Soooo I recon genres aren't gonna be as cared about anymo and ppl will just like what they like and make what they want
This is exactly what will happen. It’s already happening now. We see that new EP from drake with those heavily Jazz influenced instrumentals. He’s even releasing all the instrumentals soon so people can rap over it. I’d say that’s a start
I still click on your videos expecting them to be the usual youtube ramble about a vague point, slightly related to the clickbait title. I am wrong every time with your videos, they are well thought out, concise, and have some awesome knowledge and opinions sprinkled throughout. Big fan.
Although New Jack Swing first merged in the late '80s, it's really more associated with the early '90s. Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison" came out in 1990. The movie "New Jack City" came out in 1991, as did Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' album (which had several New Jack Swing tracks produced by Teddy Riley), and The Arsenio Hall Show, which featured many New Jack Swing artists as musical guests, propelled the genre into the mainstream in the early '90s. As for Hip-Hop, I'm down for anything new. The whole trap-derived sound has been soooooooo played out, it's a joke. It's time to bury it in the ground.
it's weird, but as a producer and a rapper, along with the new wave of rap-rock, not realising it, I also started listening to more rock'ish, or even metal'ish things like System, Slipknot or Nirvana and even playing the guitar again (I first picked it up in 2018, but didn't like it back then)
I've been a believer in the cycles concept in popular music for a long time.. I was born in 1987, so the recent 80s-pop resurgence has been super nostalgic for me, even though it's a period I was far too young to associate actual memories with.. Instead I think my brain creates emotional connections automatically when I hear it, which is really interesting. But I've been considering the 90s thing for a minute, I had a feeling it was coming soon but I had no clue what it would actually sound like. If this is any indication, it's going to be a lot better than I expected. Brilliant video man, I've seen a couple of your videos in the past but I'm definitely subscribing right now.
It's quite simple, really..... Just find the hipster with the most social clout amongst the 'wannabe' culture morons, strap your knee-pads on, and say, "AAAAAAH!" You will immediately receive your anointing by injection! 😂😂😂😂
that beat was dope!!!! And as someone who grew up in the 90s and loves hiphop and grunge, I am excited about this new age of music. Bring on the GRUNGE!!!!
I feel like the next wave is going to be between the Earl Sweatshirt/Alchemist, MIKE, or even Griselda sound and plugggnb ect, because those are the most prominent underground sounds that aren’t technically mainstream, and don’t get me wrong I can definitely see that ken karson, or kinda rock rap sound being mainstream but it’d be really niche, or have a low chance of doing so. Pluggnb and that abstract soul/boombap-ish sound is the most reaching niche of the underground and thats why to me I think it’s between those
I’ve been producing for about 11 years now and with the more experience I get, the more I inevitably go down uncharted territories. Music has very interesting times ahead, I think we’re going to hear lots of things we never expected and I’m proud to bring some of those things into the equation myself.
This video was definitely interesting for me since even before realizing this boom of Rap Rock was happening I was mostly making beats (although stylistically it's something more leaning towards what Billy Woods, Lil Ugly Mane and ELUCID would rap on than Slowthai) that sampled a lot of Rock/Metal artists. I might even site some of these artists as my main inspirations over most Hip Hop artists tbh. Bands like Manic Street Preachers(their earlier works), Swans, Soundgarden, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Electric Wizard, Shining, Unwound and Black Flag all influenced me heavily when it comes to both sound and lyricism so it's really cool to see this phenomenon being more common
@@yetal1t city morgue is way more metal, but zillakami on dog boy did a lot of rap rock. he also talked a lot about making a pure grunge album, which i would like to hear as a grunge fan
great video! one thing that I think about a lot as an aspiring producer is the history of recorded music, but primarily how that impacts modern day music. In the last 10 years or so, we've had a lot more accessibility to countless eras and times of music unlike any year beforehand. Likewise, its easier to discover new music from any style or any time in history. Compare music platforms to the early 2000s for example, we don't need to go out, find a CD someone might have reviewed, and check it out, you can just swipe a screen and find polyrhythmic gregorian chant music if you wanted. That being said, this era in the music industry is really unique in history because of how many producers throughout many years can implement their influences of any year or style of music into modern music. To build off your mentioning of the cyclical nature of music, I think the era of music we exist in is the equivalent of duct taping that cycle onto the wheel of a Porche 911 on the autoban. Artists are trying to get the motown tonality feeling while incorporating phil collins styled snares with gated reverbs, and this could al be on some ska track. Ultimately this is all fun and good to think about but so what? I think if you're an aspiing producer, you should go out of your normal listening routine and find something you might not have heard before and break it down and allow it to drive you to create something new. How does Joy Division craft an ambiance and where do the instruments sit in the mix? how does that compare to a Funkadelic mix? Whats the tonality difference between 70s funk drums and 80s pop drums? how would you create that? I think by doing exercises like this will fundamentally make you a stronger producer but also help you find a blend of different genres through time that might not have been done before.
Dude you're an amazing producer !!!!😁😁 You've changed the way I listen to music but going as far prophesying the future of rap culture, though it might be a feasible prediction its not exactly your forte. The universe has endless possibilities
Everything goes through cycles the pendulum swings from one extreme to another. Im a marketing student but i took one trend forcasting class in the fashion major and i swear to God it allowed me to see things I'd never noticed
i know the aim of your channel is based in teaching/advising beat PRODUCTION. However i wish you would have continued the "Music goes in circles" theme of topic, it was really interesting . is there any possibility you could make a full video on this .
I don’t see it going from 808’s to this style of Hip Hop. More so it’s probably going to go back to more of a sample based form of Hip Hop. This kind of Hip Hop will not get in play in the clubs or cars nowadays. Maybe it’ll work on a smaller scale as far as some niche off brand underground stuff but not on a large scale. Sample based Hip Hop is about to take over again.
I agree with you but the cycle is becoming randomized everyone is doing whatever they want whenever they want like early 2000s pop punk sound is being implemented more and more these days and then the next week we just flash right back to the 70s then the next week we jump to the 90s it is a cycle for sure but the cycle is being randomized
shoegaze n alternative + rap is already a pretty big thing and i feel that it’s the actual next huge sound for the reason that sampling things like deftones riffs and some people are even going far enough to sample weezer
Id love to see a video on netuh beats type of beats like his crazier ones. Sorry to be so vague on that request i just can’t think of any specific names atm but any beats in that dark underground horrorcore type of genre.
And trance-ish influence is all over the place in modern main stage techno. And it starts to evolve into hard style even more, because young ravers demands faster bpms.
The templates of the past can be an inspiration in the beginning phases, but it's helpful to think beyond what's been done before. The World isn't waiting for more of the same.
I’m tryna understand what he’s heard that makes him think that Grunge Rap is the next wave lol cuz I haven’t heard a single hint of Rock elements in ANYthing current. Also, how’s he already setting rules and standards for a wave that isn’t even here yet (if it even does come) talking about some “bpm has to be this, you can’t use 808s, you must do this!” 😂😂 ANDDDD, he keeps on saying “these beats have this,” “these beats have that.” WHAT ARE THESE BEATS he’s talking about??!! 😂
@@Bagheera_Smoov yeah, I mean I can see how you could argue that some grunge elements are going to become more mainstream soon, but the underground is deeper than that by definition and he seems to be arguing that grunge is the norm there? Which isn’t true, despite what youtubers may tell you underground hip hop is deeper than Griselda (which is hardly underground these days) who aren’t that grungy anyways, if anything in recent years I think there’s been a much bigger return to acoustic and live sounding music underground than anything more electronic. And pop music certainly isn’t gonna become any more dirty anytime soon. Listen to that new Drake album, or really any other pop album. I don’t see much distortion there.
@@Bagheera_Smoovhe’s talking like nascar aloe or triplesixdelete beats it’s kinda a passing wave at this point but it had its time in the underground and has and probably will influence more mainstream artists to some degree, but I’m with you on the opinion that no major artist sounds fully like this style and it doesn’t appeal to mainstream audiences so it would have an incredibly hard time surfacing as the “next wave”
Culture goes in cycles. Every 20 - 30 years you hear the music influence & see the fashion of about 20/30 years prior. Just missing some held out power chords on an electric guitar at the start of each bar
I'm glad people brought up city morgue as somebody who's already covering this genre but I'd also like to bring up ghostmane, he has been doing it as well
I already am onto this just today I thought to myself today whether it is even rap that I am creating and mixing for myself at this time, a couple hours later at 4am I see this video, well, I also have some punk, rock, rnb and trap influences in my sound, even pop however this is very interesting idea, it might be God giving artists ideas each "cycle", I am just conspirating at this point however..
