Landscape Architecture & Urban Design has gone through some massive changes in the last few years.. there has been a lot of major events that have happened as well as many technological advances within the profession that are leading us to a unique crossroads and opportunity in the field for the next decade. In this video I discuss my thoughts on where we could be going in terms of design in the next 5-10 years

Just a few thoughts on how LA's might be able to guide urban design and address other key issues in development. First, water conservation through creative onsite retention and absorption rather than piping to the nearest waterway. Second, more sustainable design in high risk areas along rivers and coastal areas using recreational land buffers and conservation areas and maybe third, reduce heat island effects in urban areas by creative selection and planting of a variety of indigenous tree and shrub species along city streets and residential areas. Many other opportunities exist.

I agree! There are so many obvious solutions that we as LA’s know of I feel that it just is often left out or value engineered out of the process

@@DesignItGreen agreed. My experiences with value-engineering are that resulting designs and construction usually lead to either failures or increased maintenance and earlier replacement of design elements, “cheaper don’t get it”. Thanks.

Isnt it a paradox to position suburban sprawl which is the leading destructor of habitats, as a savior of biodiversity because a few native plants are being micromanaged by gardeners ? Doesnt this framing give permission to continue with low density housing as long as a few natives are engineered in ?

I think it's definitely an interesting and very hard question.

I'm having a lot of trouble finding the right sources (if any really) to learn about landscape architecture on a nature landscape scale honestly for restoration type design. Our classes focus mostly on gardens and city/village design and a historical view on how landscapes formed and not that larger scale towards designing them and it's rather disappointing. Perhaps I'm just missing the right search term?? Or we're really just completely lacking in experience of making informed designs.

I think knowledge in restoration type design is much more underground than other topics, but there are definitely lots of ways to learn about them. I'd suggest taking classes outside of landscape architecture to supplement your knowledge (plant science, ecology, biology, hydroponics etc.) I think what happens in school is they try to generalize and make it digestible for new designers as restoration projects are not only very specific but are also incredibly complex

@@DesignItGreen Yeah it think might also be our schooling set-up here. We are behind to other countries (we don't have studies beyond bachelor) and our system means we get a set combination of classes, not allowing for diversity and specialization and once our government credit is gone from studying we can't take up for additional studies either. You can see this in how limited local application of permaculture principles is as well, trying to copy one on one when it's not all applicable to our regions. Self-study in areas like biology and such might get me more of a base though. Thanks for the suggestion!

Oh interesting, I didn't know it was so standardized, definitely try to find some books or online sources to fill the gaps in those areas you are interested in!

@zomerbloesem9371 i get you. Same with ours as well. Theres so much to self study apart from completing academic, when do you do it? I am currently trying to find masters courses which can fill my interest on landscape urbanism and waste management. Not mentioning and lets forget the interest i have on building conservation as well. But, How do i do both ? Also to mention, no offence but i dont like the idea of making beautiful parks and knowing names of trees. I think that's more artificial but thats what is needed to be delivered when i work as a landscape architect later, if i am one.
