The Future of Solid State Wind Energy - No More Blades. Go to brilliant.org/Undecided to sign up for free. And also, the first 200 people will get 20% off their annual premium membership. Wind power is one of the fastest-growing renewable sources that works well at scale, but it isn't perfect. What if we could scale down wind turbine power to something that could fit on your roof? And be self-contained with smaller moving parts ... or maybe no blades or moving parts at all? Let's look at some future alternatives for harnessing wind power.

I would install a PowerPod like that on my roof without a second thought. In the past, there was a chimney on the roof, but in the future there will be PowerPods like this. So why not, especially since they also produce electricity at night if the wind is blowing. The large wind turbines on land have an enormous disadvantage that cannot simply be wiped away: they actually disfigure the landscapes, are noisy, require a great, great deal of space and are death traps not only for birds but also for a wide variety of insects. It is therefore fair to say that wind turbines do not contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. Wind turbines at sea, on the other hand, make much more sense than on land, in my opinion. There are some birds at sea, but significantly fewer than on land, and insects are almost non-existent on the open sea. So why not PowerPods or similar power generators on the roof, especially as they are hardly visually disturbing and are the chimneys of the 21st century?

It's silly and would damage any building you attached it to. Frankly, the unreliables (wind and solar) would be great if we had more cheap storage. Anywhere with the topography to support a gravity battery (water pumped uphill) and a good wind resource should be loaded up with wind turbines. The places in the world with the most unreliables are also the most expensive energy markets. Germany, for example, has 3 times the electricity costs. Meanwhile China added over a hundred gigawatts in 2020 in coal. In China, coal is king. Whatever we do will be undone by them.

The same thing would be the case with how using scientifically accurate Latin nomenclature to describe everything even in everyday conversation would be accurate but incredibly ungainly and wildly unpopular. Context matters. If we were to say "Housecats cause billions of deaths per year!" without mentioning the specific species that were dying? That would be a scientifically accurate but effectively useless statement. Essentially "Misinformation". I believe it's called the Wind Augmented Natural Generator. I say we could just embrace its beauty and maybe add some intricate branching paint lines along the side (you know, like adding speed stripes to a car, but I'm thinking a deeper red or blue color to really make it pop) and a retractable fabric cover at the tip to protect it. And it's going to get covered in dust, so instead of being bright white, maybe paint it a light beige to hide the dust. Obviously it makes sense to add a hole at the top in order to allow the necessary lubricant oil to slowly drip out (a pre-lubrication phase) and recirculate down the sides, followed by a few strong squirts of oil every ten minutes or so to shower the device to ensure proper operation. I'd want to do the full oiling more often, but I think if we squirt the oil too often though the pumps needed won't have time in between to cool down. Finally, if we could make it portable, that would be awesome. We could build a more manageable version, maybe 8-12 inches long, and replace the permanently rigid shaft with a collapsible one containing bladders that we can fill with fluid to recover its rigidity. Then the portable version would also include two detachable spheres (low surface area to save on manufacturing costs) to house the generator and inverter. I'll start focusing on building a prototype and see if I can find any photos online that look similar to the redesign.

The government arent doing anything to help the energy rape taking place here, whilst in France the energy firms have had their increase capped at 4% here in the UK we are looking at a 200% price hike in energy costs. Thanks for your informative channel, I would probably opt for 6 of the Powerpods along my house ridge, but a planning permission application is £400 ($500) and that covers just one device, each additional device is another charge. So you see they would let me fit them - but they want their cut of my investment and my savings. We are all being charged.

Another advantage to Savonius "egg beater" turbines is that they can operate in higher winds. Ironically, traditional "propeller" type turbines have to engage brakes and stop in very high winds or the extra forces can damage or destroy them, but egg beaters just go faster. They're attached at the top and bottom, usually, so they're more stable.

I like the solution that teenager on an island came up with. He strings ribbons between two masts in a window frame. One end of each ribbon is tied statically to one mast, while the other end is tied to a rod magnet that is mounted to the other mast by a rubber band. The magnets ride inside copper coils connected to a battery, capacitor, or electricity-stabilizing circuit as needed for the application. When the wind blows the ribbons shake, causing the magnets to translate back and forth inside the coils, thereby generating electrical current. It's enough to power a few devices, but it can be cheaply and easily expanded to provide power for a small house. Smart kid!

One careful consideration in wind marketing power/energy output numbers is where they're pulling their available wind energy data from. Most of the time they use data from an airport at 50m, which is much higher than what you would experience on a roof in a suburb at 20m. This is a very common practice in marketing, so be sure to perform a wind energy analysis if you're interested in wind power at the exact location. There are ways to estimate power at lower heights if anyone is interested.

According to the Powerpod's website, the company "lacks the ability to produce a quality, custom blade to place in the powerpod." So, predictably, they're asking for kickstarter money -- for engineers, more development, etc. In other words, the product doesn't actually exist. As with nearly every other green energy "breakthrough" out there right now, it's basically someone's pet science-fiction idea cosplaying as an "invention," and the patent owners are hoping that all of us will invent it for them by paying other engineers to figure it out. Don't expect it to be "available by the end of 2021," as the video above suggests.

The power pod is essentially a jet engine that's been retrofitted to change how air intake works, but otherwise uses the same basic concepts of compression along internal blades to produce massive amounts of force and spin them faster. Presumably with magnets inside a loop of wire to generate electromagnetic fields. It's actually quite brilliant but also probably works best on flat, horizontal surfaces rather than on angled rooftops in subdivisions. I'd love to see it progress and get notoriety, though.

@rabidhellhound9714
@rabidhellhound9714 2 года назад
@@LeMayJoseph Agreed. Even on buildings, however, it's still incredibly useful if they have flat tops. Also, if you can adjust the air intake angles, you can easily make them operate sideways and attach them to the sides of buildings. Predominately, those that don't face towards the sun. Depending upon the exact design, you may even be able to produce column long ones that lay against the side of the building like a water/electrical pipe and catch crosswinds to passively generate power. If I ever one a lottery and became a multimillionaire, I would love to set up an airponics farm and use experimental solar and wind technologies to power it. Like, INDUSTRIAL scale, not small little home scales. Then record all data and release it to the public for free to provide real world data on how possible it is to grow food and go green using far less invasive or poluting methods. Show up all of these billionaires *claiming* to want to help out the earth by going to space by ACTUALLY helping out the earth by providing real world data on stainabilty for large societies (not just hermit huts) and what steps we need to improve upon it.

I wonder about some energy loss through friction and turbulence. Some tiny part of the wind might even bounce off. But perhaps these effects are minimal thanks to that long experience they have and so a optimal design, as you mention.

I am an expert in both EFD (Electro Fluid Dynamics) and Fluid Mechanics, I have published many articles in the field. For EFD systems, for ion injection in air; there is a fundamental power limitation to around 1mW for a square meter of surface in standard air. Using water droplets do improve things to one order of magnitude according to droplets size (10mW to 100mW/m2). For resonance induced by Karman vortex streets, the situation is similar; a resonnance is necessary to obtain large amplitudes but as soon as you extract even a tiny fraction of the oscillating energy, oscillations are rapidly damped leading to extremely low efficiencies. There is a single rule that you must keep in mind when reaching this type of content: audience is more more important than facts. More generally when someone pretends to quantitative breakthroughs in a field that has been extensively studied by experts for more than a century, there is a 99.99% chance that it is either a naive dreamer or a crook, pick your choice !

As your reactions to my post are positive, just a little more info concerning EFD generators: When you want to produce electrical power with ions in air, you must carry the ions against the electric field that is trying to bring them back to the electrode they were extracted from. As ions are very mobile in air, for high-field levels they drift among neutral with velocities slightly above the speed of sound. It means that you must use a supersonic flow to carry them toward the high potential electrode (the collector) in order to reach acceptable power levels. As hydrodynamic pressure is in v^2, the power level is in v^3; If instead of using a flow speed in the km/s range, you use a flow speed in the meter per second range, the allowed field level gets extremely low and the power level you can reach is around 10^9 lower!!!!! For the record, in the years 1980 when people and researchers were not as dumb as they are today, some teams in the States have tried to make such EHD high-power (and high-voltage) power generators for airborne power lasers using supersonic flows. Unfortunately it led to poor results, as they were themselves ignorant of the EHD instability that was studied in France twenty years earlier (in the 1960) !!!
