I was trying to be a little understanding on the commercial side, but no more. To hll with them after hearing that! Glad Dunbar opened his mouth to let me see how they are!
I’ve made it home for vacation in NC this month. Two days ago my father-in-law get with his friend to let my son ride on a boat out around Atlantic Beach. His friend who owns the boat starts bragging about how he got his commercial fishing license and how he can keep flounder but others can’t. I almost lost it on him. I was so pissed and refused to speak until I got my son of that boat. My father-in-law didn’t understand why I was so mad. I had to break down to him with deer hunting season for him to understand how unfair the recreation angler is being treated in NC.
The license transfer rules were ignored by DMF for many years. The result was a lot of licenses winding up in the hands of random rec fishermen that just didn't want to follow the normal limits everyone else has. It's wild to me that people feel like it's ok just because it's legal.
A real commercial fisherman is fishing for the people who can't fish in North Carolina less than 2,000 commercial license are active. The county of Raleigh has over a million recreation license sold.
Brewski - thanks for doing this. As you said, we need to consistently contact our representatives and keep this top of mind. Our fisheries' management practices need to change.
Recreational anglers need to make plans to attend the next MFC in Raleigh in August if at all possible. Calling your legislators is important for spreading the word about our concerns for the future of our fisheries, but the fight over speckled trout is in the hands of the MFC right now and we absolutely have to have our voices heard!
How does NC’s passage regarding the right to hunt and fish impact this? I heard Joe at Salt Strong say that law can be used to sue the state of their action interfere with that right.
It is about about recs vs comms it's obvious that most of these commercial guys are not the kind of people that will listen to good reason. It's about time to stop playing nice with them and trying to make a fair deal. They have no more right to catch and keep a fish than I do. Needs to be another lawsuit
The JA commercial interests destroyed the Delaware Bay weakfish population(cousin of the spec). They’ll do the same to the speckled trout. The reason because they pay off anybody they have to, to get what they want. We know what they want more for themselves and less for everybody else. Recreational fishing produces way more revenue than commercial interests. The big difference they grease the palms of the few that are the gate keepers. In the D-Bay it went from no limit (other than size) to 8 per day, to 1, then it was all over. Destroyed family business, marinas, bait and tackle shops, bait companies. 100’s of millions $$$ in boat, gas, and food saies related to recreational fishing trips. Not to mention the mental and physical health of thousands of anglers that work hard at their jobs and need a recreational day now and again. Sickening what happened.
I'm not positive, but I'm fairly certain that a large portion of that DB stock was destroyed right here off of NC as well. I've been told that a majority of the East coast stock of weakfish gathered off of Hatteras in the winter, where they were decimated by the flynet fishery. In any case, our weakfish suffered the same fate as yours. They used to be one of the "big three" that everyone in NC fished for. They've never been very valuable commercially per pound but there was a time when it was the number one commercial fishery in NC just from the sheer volume of fish caught. Now the stock is collapsed, and they still kill millions of juveniles as bycatch in the trawl fishery every year.
The Pamlico sound can’t support a large commercial fishery. I feel for the commercial fishermen but their chosen vocation is a dying one. Recreational fishing contributes way more to North Carolinas economy
I'm a local here on island and Ive personally stated i believe there should be no net fishing in the sound. its like fishing in a preschool. most baby fish start in sound and migrate towards the ocean. and over fishing the sound is where the problem starts. and the trout is exactly the species in mind when Ive thought of this. their so fragile as babes just being stuck in a net for just moments kills them. Ive been on the commercial side of this. its not pretty. commercial net fishing in ocean only is my plea. i also believe this for flounder too. imagine if we let them breed in the sound without nets for a couple years. we may actually be able to fish for them in the ocean again. because there not in the ocean like they used to be. just saying
also water quality of the sound...lots of septics leach in to sound...also ocean too in spots...maybe better regulations of houses near water systems. you know the "ones" just letting them falling in mostly insurance issue as ive learned. but high tide should not be washing a whole house of debres and septic aways because paper work is in the way.
@@jeffreykennedy7190 you are absolutely right Jeff. Shrimp trawlers in the sound have devastating effects on this nursery. I fished the sound in the early 80s and it is night and day
This needs to hit the media. I agree to call legislatures also. It doesn’t take as many calls as you would think either. If they get more than a dozen calls they will change their stance on this. They want their jobs a lot more than you think. But it also needs to hit news stations and newspapers. I for one want to see NO COMMERCIALFISHING INSHORE! 3 miles out! Can you get us contacts names of the legislatures we need to call please? Are you talking about our state House of Representatives and state senators?
You'd be surprised. If you haven't seen "the truth about flounder" yet you'll need to see that. There are hundreds of thousands of dollars flowing into political coffers to keep things the way they are. I am meeting with legislators pretty regularly but we need to keep the pressure up consistently. Coastal legislators are the most important for fisheries mgmt with both NC house and NC Senate and Governor having big impacts. The Governor has almost total control over standard mgmt but currently that is a lot of the problem. I make videos almost every week and I highlight specific calls to action each week. Feel free to call me if you'd like to be more involved. 910-581-4415
Commercial fishing is obviously the issue with the vast majority of the problems with fisheries. Honestly they should completely ban any form of intercostal commercial fishing and ban any form of net fishing that could result in the damage of reefs or habitat. They should also restrict the lbs they can harvest and species harvested.

@@jeffreykennedy7190 Not to mention the pollution from lawn care and poorly regulated farming. It blows my mind that they even let places like a golf course be so close to wet lands or the intercoastal. As far as what you're suggesting I completely agree, if we want to improve our fisheries we have to protect their spawning grounds and stop allowing the commercial side of the industry dominate our waterways solely for the sake of the dollar. Something has to change or it's just going to keep getting worse
The commercial fisherman are killing the waters. They did the same thing in Ohio on Lake Erie commercial perch fishery they overdid it now you can barely catch 10 every time you go out you run into their nets lose hundreds of dollar and tackle.
That's good to know. I'm always interested to hear about different examples around the country. It really seems like any animal is doomed if there is a pricetag attached to it. Market hunting wiped out most of the land mammals and its only through a lot of conservation efforts that their populations have recovered somewhat.
The comm guys take from other comms too. It's all just a race for money. VA just opened the winter crab dredge fishery again. That fishery catches roughly 90% female crabs.
WOW!!! So the commercial boats want all the fish and nothing for recreational people? Do any of the commercial guys understand that recreational fishing is a big part of the Outer Banks? What are the charter captains saying about it? This directly impacts their livelihood. I hope it doesn’t get that bad here in Virginia.
The charter captains have been screaming about this stuff for decades. OBX is another story because a lot of the charter captains are also comm fishermen so they tend to side with commercial. The predominant belief up in Dare County is that there are no stock issues at all
@@FishingwithBrewski Geez Brewski!!! I didn’t know that at all. Several times a year, I’m in Kitty Hawk or Nags head. I’m going to make it a point to spread the word and sign petitions as much as I can even though I live out of state.
How can someone who has a primary residence in another state , yet has a secondary home in NC, a boat in NC and pays marina fees to a NC business make an impact on those making decisions?
You can help spread the word, support the CCA lawsuit, and stay up to date with any future videos that come out for when it's time for us to take further action.
I can see how you might think this is part of some grand conspiracy from on high but I can promise you if you really get involved and meet all the people who do this you will see that is not the case.
Do a segment on why blue fish is a 3 fish limit when the water is so full of them that they chewed off 22, and I am not exaggerating, 22 Diamond jig gold hook rigs just this past Tuesday (9/10/24) while I was jigging for Spanish off of a pier on Topsail Island. It is good thing I make my own because I would go broke if I had to but them already made.
@timstroud2112 bluefish is managed federally. It might seem difficult to believe, but the bluefish population is way down from what it historically was. I know they're annoying 😆. They drive me nuts as well, but NOAA has actually just taken them off the overfished list so don't expect any more cuts. Don't expect limits to ever go higher again either because it's those limits that caused the need for reduction in the first place. Whether we like it or not, NC is seeing the success of those reductions with this spike in the population, and that's a good thing.
@timstroud2112 I absolutely love catching them on topwater when they get to that 6-7lb range. Years ago we had some runs in shallow ICW creeks that were amazing. Nothing like a 38" blue crushing a topwater when you're expecting 18-20" trout.
@@FishingwithBrewski I love catching the big as well, but when I am jigging for Spanish and the little 8" to 14" blues are ripping apart my gold hook rigs as fast as I can tie them on it gets rather frustrating.
@@timstroud2112 I have an ICW spot where I trout fish in the winter and the blues get absolutely insane. There is a wall of them in the top of the water column and the trout hang out under them. Before I figured out how to mostly avoid them and started using zman swimbaits I was spending 20-30$ a night in soft plastics to fish that area
The problem is simple. The money being made from selling fish to the people who do not fish is way more worth us who can go fish for ourselves. It's the market as you spoke about. They are willing to kill the recreational fisherman's ability to catch fish because they are not making any money off of us. It's always about the dollar. Plain and simple.
I could surely use your help. If you go watch my most recent video, we're trying to get some people together to request that we call into the meetings via zoom. Then we're going to request that a quota be put on the commercial sector. If not, all our rec side reductions are just going to become part of the commercial catch. I think if we play this right, we can get a win. We'll still take a hit, but at least we won't wind up like flounder.
@@FishingwithBrewski I was thinking over the weekend about what it would take to get the corporate's Diawa, Minn Kota, Penn, etc and all others who sell to us recreational fisherman ,to put up and help fight. They make their money on guys who recreational fish and it will hit those pockets just as hard when your not buying lures, rods, reels, boats, etc. We need some big fighters to help set this back upright.
Wayne is a commercial fisherman, charter captain, and fish house owner. You apply for the spot, and the chairman of the MFC selects from the applicants.
Like in Virginia if they want to speckled trout omega protein do all killing of stripe bass weak fish and a lot of the low numbers with all the by catch kills but why recation fisherman always pay the cost for big corporations when they are the ones destroying the fish
Yeah how the hell they trying to say they not killing the specks if everyone go out catch them all then what then they wont have the fish to catch people need to realize they're more an more people each year starting some type of commercial fishing the more people fishing the less fish the more u catch the less fish they will have people need to give the fish a chance to grow
What about all the tourist dollars lost when they push us Kentuckians to go elsewhere to recreational fish. Go every year to Nags Head. If you boys can't get it together, may have to go elsewhere. Hope you can because it's a gem and love it's beauty and people.
Once the government has the ability to tell you how many fish you can keep to feed your family, they can also tell you that you can’t keep any. This is evil. This regulatory body needs to be voted out of office and a movement needs to start to disband the government commission that regulates this. And the catch and release thing is part of the scam. This whole thing is bad.
@@FishingwithBrewski I can tell you who loses, every American citizen. I do believe the catch and release movement is part of conditioning kids that there is limited resources so “your” government will regulate the resources for you. I’ve fished my entire life and worked for many years in the fish industry. I’ve never seen a lack of fish.
VA has Omega protein running the pogie boats and just reopened the winter crab trawl fishery that catches roughly 90% female crabs. They definitely have some issues. SC is another story but they are definitely working far better for the interests of the people.
Let’s be honest, why would we entertain this stuff? Fish & keep what you decide you need. Politics and commercial fishing/expectations couldn’t be more irrelevant.
If everybody just keeps what they decide they need, we will definitely push the population down to a point where we don't get the best crop each following year. Sometimes, we have to back off for things like cold kill as well.
I'm trying to keep it where people can trout fish. The freeze definitely makes it feel like our efforts are wasted in a way, but the better the stock is doing when it freezes, the more trout survive and the faster the recovery is. Having more fish in the water benefits us all in the long run.
@@ecountre I would 100% agree that recs aren't hurting a lot of populations, but speckled trout isn't one of them. Some of the Neuse River creeks will have 30 boats and kayaks in them all day on weekdays. I'm sure it's much worse on weekends but I never go because I know it'll be a clown show 😄. There's no way we're not making a dent with that kind of pressure
Soon, it will be where you just have to go out and keep what you want...let them check and give you a ticket. Have seen this song and dance bull$hit too many times
It doesn't have to be that way. Roughly 1 of every 12 people in NC fish the coast. If they all knew what was happening and were willing to make small efforts to make changes, we could turn this system upside down.
@@FishingwithBrewski The recs kicked and screamed for years in VA about menhaden fishery. Didn't do an ounce of good...see the same thing going on in NC. I applaud your determination...don't get me wrong.
As a recreational fisherman with commercial background. I have seen first hand the bycatch of trawling and netting!! So I’m not talking thru videos seen on RU-vid as most rec. fisherman that talk trash about commercial fishermen! There were way more fish and larger fish when the size limit was smaller. There are millions of fish that are messed up by catching them and releasing due to mouths sore and can’t eat and become weak ,which then become dinner for other fish crabs , so on !!! The commercial guys just want to do what they been doing since before Jesus and that’s fish !! Rec guys just want everyone to stop taking fish that they can’t catch and show off! You said most of the seafood that’s caught in nc is sold other places and maybe true but that’s not the commercial guys fault that’s the fisheries fault , we commercial or rec can’t not catch flounder but it’s sold in every seafood market which ins imported from somewhere else , that’s not right !!!!! If we aren’t allowed to catch it we schools not be able to buy it in our state ! Our food should stay in our state plain and simple !!! Rec guys should not be able to fish for fish where commercial guys can’t and commercial guys shouldn’t be able to fish where rec guys can’t !!! Fishing is sport , and commercial fishing is a job,way of life! The daily catch should be more for commercial due to the amount you license cost. Commercial is 500 give or take and rec is 60, if rec guys want to catch more then pay more for you license!! They took striper fishing in eastern nc said 2 years , that was 5 years ago and there are more stripers than an ever and we can’t catch them!!! Nonsense now flounder , and there are more flounder than there has ever been in my life !!!! I think it’s all nonsense to tell me or you or anyone that they can’t catch what God has created and gave us ti eat. There should be Seasons on them if any thing but to say we can’t is not right!!!
It's hard to follow all that exactly, but I agree that any seafood caught in our state should stay in the state. If there is an abundance of fish, however, just catch and sell them to whoever will buy in state or not, but there is no way we should be feeding Japan when a NC stock is not doing well.
