I remember a few months ago saying that everybody looking for a 4 season tent should be looking for your opinion. Now it seems, to me at least, that a brand is also willing to rest part of its own image in your opinion, and not any brand but one whose tents retail all above 1k euros. I think that is only fair and up to theh quality of your videos. I'm genuinely happy for you. I hope this is only the first of them and that the numbers in your channel keep growing. Cant wait to see that tent in high winds. Regards from Argentina. (sorry my English btw)

Hey Marco, thank you for your comments. I really appreciate them.. Yeah I have been working harder lately making more videos so getting approached by Samaya was fantastic.. A bit of a breakthrough. I hope to review more of their tents too to offer something different for my viewers... Very soon I hope to do some real world tests.. Your English is perfect by the way.. Thank you once again for your kind comment it's really nice to read.. Take care down there.. Tom

Also, I highly recommend the ground sheet on this. DCF is great but extremely prone to rupture and catching fire. I ordered their ground sheet which is not made with DCF. There is absolutely no moisture even during cold -5 nights I’ve spent in it. This is a great tent and a little vestibule space will make it perhaps the best 4 season single skin

Hi Tom it’s really a futuristic tent I like the ventilation on top of the tent and I think that it would be the best method to handle condensation, you should try out the tent in humid conditions without wind. To check the breathable fabric.

Hi Tom. I was quite hard on the the previous model in my comments, but I can really appreciate this tent for what it’s intended purpose is. As you said it’s a very focused alpine bivvy style tent. So that comes with a minimal footprint. However I can see the additional design thought that had been input to this tent over comparable bivvy style tents from black diamond, rab or MSR. The ventilation options look considerably better, as do the storage options, and it’s a lot lighter than say a black diamond eldorado. It looks a brilliant bit of kit for its intended design use. It will be interesting to see it in some wind and rain. Given our climate as you said, you won’t struggle to find either! Cheers Gary

Hey Gary great that you like this one... I hope to get it out soon again for some testing.. If it works it could be the way forward for me. Even if there is some condensation (I will soon dispatch it) It wont bother me as I prefer the strength and lightweight and space for one... Looking at some of their other design too now that the brand has got may attention... Tom.

Glad you got this, Tom. I’ve used this one in recent wintery conditions in Lake District. Works like a charm. Looking forward to detailed field test. One thing I found is cooking or lack of vestibule space. If it is raining, which it often does in UK, it could be a problem. So good you have a vestibule. I thought it was nullifying the advantage of light weight tent to add 500gm vestibule.
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 Год назад
Hey thanks for the double comments as an owner of this tent. Great to hear you are in the UK too.. Yeah regarding the size of the vestibule Samaya didn't want to compromise in that so they made it a big one.. No doubt it's really functional. I think 💬 the modular concept is great as on a good amount of trips in the summer I wouldn't take it and save weight . ATB Tom

If the Samaya functions in summer with the bug/mesh, this could be a tent for all seasons in Norway, and supplant the need I have now for many tents. I would like though, to know if the vestibule could be connected to or stay connected without using the poles. If not, it must be assemled using gloves, which in that case have to be easy. Winter conditions in Scandinavia dictate using a fluid driven multifuel burner, so the vestibule is a must. To me, this tent must be the Hilleberg Tarra and Rogen combined if I'm gonna buy it. I would advise Samaya to do a full pitch video where they display clipping on the mesh and the vestibule. Great review as always, Tom.

Why are tent makers so resistant to making tents big enough for the British market? Plenty of people keep asking for longer / taller tents. Just add 30cm on the end tent makers; it's not rocket science, for goodness sakes.
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 Год назад
Hey Timmy, this must be frustrating... So many tents are close to the limit length wise I agree. Its possibly a weight issue as increasing the dimensions adds weight and buyers today are so critical if they think a tent weights even a few grammes more than it should... It's a real bug bear of mine. I'm 6'3 and yet the majority of tents are too small. There seems to be a universal '210cm' but depending on the shape of the tent, then adding a mat and sleeping bag, the reality is many end up being around 180cm or less. It's ridiculous. I ended up going for the Sierra design clearwing tent because the sides are vertical for quite a way so I fit in easy. But yes, tent manufacturers have to up their game.
@jamiegoodhart7069
@jamiegoodhart7069 Год назад
I'm with you on that. In general and here. This tent is too small for me at 6 foot 3 and a bit. The Ultra assault tent with the inline vestibule may be slightly better option, but marginally. Tenting is the only thing I wish I was short for!

Tim, just a recent viewer of your channel and from the same 'neck of the woods' as you. I like your thorough reviews.. I don't know what the future of single skin tents is because tent buyers have never gravitated towards a single ' way forward' The people who camp are everything from the basic happy campers to the informed, savvy hikers and everything in between. Add to this affordability and you are into another discussion Right now in this double skin world I'm looking for a tent that can pitch ground mat/inner/ outer all in one go. I'm only looking for a three season tent..I can't pay a fortune because family and keeping my head above water come first. But I still like to get out...and my Naturehike Cloud Peak 2 ticks the boxes for what I want time and time again. It's not a Hilleberg, but just fine for what I want. For as long as there is development choice or China can be allowed to rob and duplicate alternatives there will be a future for tents of different types and at different price points. Nice tent. If it takes off I guarantee there will be a clone in 18 months or less, which for 80+% of users at a lower price and with minimal compromise will be just fine. Just my tuppence worth..

They have it going on now. That's a superlight tent especially for motorcycle and any other camping. One thought I have is I would like to see the vestibule built on the original tent. Hardly ever have I not needed one. Most all but not all have them as part of the fly or body. My old Eureka 4 person has an add on unit. Never an issue but that much more to deal with in a fast set up scenario. Do the side doors have a mesh panel to keep bugs out? I like that tent. The lower portion is extended for snow or rain runoff. That's good. Got to like the built in storage. Many should do that. If nothing else I hope other manufacturers take note of this design and incorporate some of the best into there's. Always room for improvement. Take care Tom. Be safe out there.

Hey Sam, you are watching and commenting on so many of my videos so thank you very much.. In my next video of this tent I will demonstrate the vestibule set up if that's what you mean...I think I understand. Yeah all my tent s have always had one as part of the tent. In the summer or better weather I totally get this idea as I frequently cook outside and don't need a vestibule... Also it gives you the choice if you know you might camp somewhere where there is not much space for the tent... I am kind of growing to this modularity type concept... Lots to think about.. Take care and once again thank you for your time.. Tom

Hi Tom, it’s taken me a couple of days to catch up with this video (sorry). What a great combination of technologies, from the pegs through to the modular DCF vestibule. A brand that is certainly looking to revolutionise tent design! Now get out there and test it 👍 I’m pretty sure it’s a robust and weathertight shelter. I was a little puzzled by the vestibule valance, I assume it’s a snow valance, but it didn’t quite reach the ground - does it need to be longer / wider? Anyway great video 🎉

Yeah a lot going on here in this tent and very forward thinking from Sayama. I actually love the modular vestibule idea and would not bring it for many of my camps in the summer when I love to sit and cook outside the tent. the vestibule attachment is very easy and slick too... The Valance position was probably just the way I had it pitched as it was the first time... vestibule is massive and really allows two people inside to do cooking etc at the same time... ATB Tom...

An interesting video. I can't say I'm convinced by single wall tents. Possibly, some of this is with me starting out with canvas tents in the 70's. Touch it and it leaks until you run it down to the floor. With an inner, it keeps you and your bag away from the condensation on the outer. Almost all nights I'm touching the inner at some point. That tent doesn't look big enough for me, I'm 5'11" with a very long back. I think you'd get away with that size with 2 skins but not one.

Its a very tiny minority that have a real love for tents. I as well am in that club. I just love the bigger poles..I recently found a company www.wildernessequipment.com.au/our-gear/shelter/expedition-tents/second-arrow-x/. who have 11mm poles in their tunnel tents... The companies have to make a decision somewhere between weight and strength as the market is ultra critical if a tent is a few grammes heavier than it should be. While this and the Alpine version are basically lighter and more poised versions of existing tent design, I actually think the 3.0 looks like the most interesting tent Samaya do. Okay this one has slightly smaller diameter poles than the Assaut2.. Both need to be oriented narrow end into the wind for best performance so without the vestibule s not much difference I would assume.. But when you add the vestibule the Assault 2 can still be set up tail to wind whereas if you do that on this one you either expose the long side of the tent or the large side profile of the Vestibule.. This is exactly why I went for the Assault 2.. Hope that is explained okay.. Anything else just ask.. Tom

Hello Tom, I’m from Scandinavia. We do have a lot of bugs in our nature. Do you think this tent it is a good choice for a Scandinavium nature? I’m thinking there is no mesh wall option… Thanks, I do really appreciate you videos! :)

Hi, thank you for watching my video on the Samaya 2.0. As far as I am aware there is a mesh attachment for the rear opening but none for the front door. You would need to double check this with Samaya as this model was a demo tent.. You understand I am sure that it's hard to get a tent that will excel in all conditions. Winter is great for this tent and summer good too if it's windy to keep the bugs away. If you have the vestibule it also gives you further protection but there are no mesh options here for the doors etc... best wishes and I hope this helps... Tom

Very much reminds me of some of the tents made by crux who use single skin carbon impregnated X-tec fabric.

Yes I have looked at the Crux tents on many occasions. As far as I am aware thought this fabric is theoretically x2 as breathable.... ATB and great to har your thoughts... Tom

Hi Tom. Can I ask what your thoughts are when comparing the Hilleberg Unna to this Samaya 2.0. They are both very similar with the doors being on the long side. If you had to choose which tent would you go with and why?
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 9 месяцев назад
It would be the Samaya as weight is important to me and it's a Kilo lighter... Even with the vestibule which is massive it's 400 g lighter and generally more livable in this set up.. The modularity of being able to use the vestibule or not to use it is great... The Unna though will suit some conditions a little better and stand alone does have a small usable vestibule... I just think wnen you get to 2.4kg weight there then are other options apart from the Unna such as a Nallo which is way bigger, and has a great vestibule but obviously not freestanding.. I hope that helps.. best wishes Tom

Hi Tom, thanks for taking out the time to respond. Do you think these Samaya tents match the Hiklebergs for wind resistance? I know you went for the Assaut 2 because you wanted the door away from the wind but I like the bigger opening door to be honest. Can I also ask if the 2.0 you reviewed here had big netting on the door? I think the more modern version of this tent has this feature and for the UK this is essential due to the midges if you use the tent outside of winter. Love the channel as you do thorough reviews and really put these tents through their paces. Keep up the good work!

2 Doors, 2 vestibules, 88” long, 51” wide, 3lbs, and only $400USD…I’ll stick with the Nemo Dragonfly for now I think.

Thank you for your thoughts.. The dragonfly gets great reviews. Pro's and cons for all tents but good to hear that it works for whatever type of camping that you do.. All the very best Tom

Often times tent designs endeavoring to mix & mate such different materials of such dissimilar properties have several consequential reliability issues... as well as likelihood for reduced longevity. I'm not at all a fan of the top pole (the way it appears to connect), and very much dislike the 'bonnet' topper cover. For this kind of niche... I rather have two doors at either long end (ie. no side entry), and it would be more applicable for alpine ridge and shelf running. I would not recommend this type of overall design having just single side entry. I'd likely skip the side attaching accessory vestibule. For Clarity: It was not quite clear how (both) poles go into sleeves. What's demonstrated pretty well is the 'black' end going into the one sleeve. However... is it an only 1-way entry into sleeve that terminates into a pocket or grommet? What do the pole tip end-components look like? For example and important especially when solo in demanding conditions: Can you 1st peg out stake loops at the terminating ends 'wind-side' (both corners of highest exposure secured)... then drive black ends through sleeves as you face into winds from leeward side... then pole tips placed in grommets??? In my experience going solo, this is where Slingfin Hotbox got it right (grommets on all corners) --- but keep in mind unlike Samaya 2.0 --- his sleeve is functionally (and really) an enhanced clip-in-system that is highly suitable.... ALSO... Todd Bibbler (way back when, though internally structured and no sleeves) got it right with I-tent (ie. secure windward exposure end, climb in, place pole ends to back corners, suck pole's door ends into corners, hop out to secure rest of tent.

Hey thanks for the comments and detail once again.. Samaya has a few tents like this with an end entrance instead of at the side which I too would prefer.. I will be testing the tent in wind and rain so we will see how the top vent cover gets on.. The pole sleeves are closed at one end and the pole end is smooth just like Hilleberg. Personally I prefer a combination of pole sleeves and clips for pitching or something like the Slingfin webb truss.. This was a first look video and I can't cover everything but can explain further in the comments.. The Modular vestibule means you can skip it or not take it depending on conditions so I think this is good.. The x2 breathability comparison to any other single wall tent I can find is another big positive.. The tent is not for everyone and that's why companies make many different options depending on individual preference.. I hope this has answered most of your concerns and I will incorporate some of this into my next review and test of this tent.. ATB Tom

I've gotten rid of my DCF fabric tent because it is terrible at abrasion resistence. If a rock even looks at the tent, it'll tear.
@petergilbert72
@petergilbert72 Год назад
Using DCF on the floor is an odd choice without a compulsory footprint. Tarptent say their silnylon tents last 50% longer than DCF on average. So apart from poor wear resistance DCF isn’t environmentally friendly with its relatively short lifespan. Second hand values should surely be low with unknown remaining life expectancy. I read of a couple doing a long distance trail in USA whose DCF tents went into lots of holes after around 100 nights.

Great use of materials. Way too small though. Without a pad or bag, reviewer's head and feet are both hitting the ends. What if one is 6'5"? Never heard short people complain about tent being too long; they can always store things in any spare tent-length. One-inch too-short and the tent is useless to a tall-person. Zpacks and Durston both recognized they were losing valuable customers, so they've extended the length of most of their new products and are thriving. Tarptent and others are declining by only catering to little-people. Would also love to see the first pole-connector bent 35° to make room for pads/bags at the ends.

Hi Tom, yeah a good few views have mentioned tents being too short in some of my other videos too... Not just the Samaya here but many tent manufactures stick to the 220 cm long.. I get it to re the pole connector bend so thank you for sharing your thoughts.... ATB Tom

Such an expensive tent with a DCF floor? That surely isn't the future of tents, except maybe on snow.
