The future of this channel... (PART 1/2)

Hello everyone and welcome back to my channel!
Today's video is somewhat gloomy and upsetting, but I think it's something that needs to be discussed as it has been on my mind the past four weeks or so. For the past several weeks, the views on my latest videos have been down considerably. It has been very discouraging.
Last week's episode of the Andrew Ball was the least viewed video on my channel since a vlog I did in June 2020. The week before that, the Retro REMAKE of the USAir commercial had very slow growth compared to other videos. Especially compared to other Retro REMAKES which tend to be the best performing videos on the channel.
While I have said often before, the point of this channel and its videos is not the amount of views and subscribers, I also know that if I want to do RU-vid or video production full-time, there needs to be some statistics or analytics to back that up.
I am unsure of where to go from here... if it's time to retire from RU-vid, if it's time to reevaluate the future of this channel, or if it's time to take a break for a while. I also am unsure of why interest is down... if videos are being posted too often, if the content needs to be switched up, or if people are bored or uninterested in the latest videos. I think it's important to note that this channel and its videos have not gained much traction (on RU-vid or TikTok) compared to other channels/creators who work hard on quality content. Maybe this is not meant to be.
I have always felt the need to be honest, open, and transparent with you in regards to how it relates to the channel and its content, which is why I decided to share my thoughts with you in this vlog.
I also seek your advice as to what to do and your opinions on the channel: Are videos being posted too often? Are you (subscribers or non-subscribers) uninterested in the content? Is there something that you would like to see or see changed? Is there a certain type of content you would like to see? Are there any ways that I can keep you engaged and interested as an audience? I value all your thoughts and comments.
I also don't want this to be taken as me complaining... I am always and forever grateful for you, your support, your views, your comments, and your subscriptions/follows. I am just trying to understand the recent downward trend in interest in the channel.
I hope the channel hasn't peaked. I hope we are not nearing a goodbye. However, I must admit: I am uncertain about the future of the channel as it is presently.
Thank you all for your continued support.

I wonder if the videos that didn't do as well were due to their relevance to a broad audience. I think your channel has a great niche that can appeal to a lot of people, but even though I like the airline commercials I don't personally remember them from my childhood (mid 1980's-2000). So maybe they don't have the "clickbait" power a video like something Stranger Things related would. Also I think the comedy of the newscasts, Andrew Ball Show, and bad life advice are what keep me coming back. The Retro Remakes also have a comedic undertone, just not as overt as some of the others. But the idea is still good! This is all just my initial gut respone to your questions, but maybe they just need to keep branching out into other types of commercials that more people remember. I really think you should keep going. You have found something unique and your comedy and writing style is great. But also, never start doing something just because other people told you to. You created the channel without our help and you did it well. Now you just need to conquer the almighty algorithm. Thanks for the content!

I agree. This channel has a mix of demographics. There's people that did experience these things and watch for nostalgic purposes or because they appreciate the content. Then there's people that didn't experience it (like myself), but still like and appreciate the feelings it brings. Then there's people that couldn't care less that its retro-themed, they like what it's about Stranger Things, The Office, etc.... So there are a lot of different people that just happen to wrap up into one channel's content. Plus, the comedic relief helps. Some are meant to be funny (like the Andrew Bal Show or Wake Up America) and some I don't try to make funny (like the Retro REMAKES), but they end up that way because they are so cheesy or goofy or sometimes just stupid (not in a bad way).

Listen, my friend. You're doing an incredible job... I upload old ads or clips all the time that garner less than 100 views in their first weeks. Everything I do takes care, time, and effort and I apply the same care to ads that nobody will ever love as much as others but I fuel myself with the hopes that it connects with even just one person on a nostalgic level. You seriously rock! I love what you do man! I didn't realize that you had done a new one, usually they come up in my timelines multiple times and I share them. I can't recall if I saw it. Please don't be disheartened by such things when you care so passionately about something. It matters! It matters to you!. I'm happy to share your stuff. You've conquered a neat little idea here. Stand on it! If you need anything, reach out any time, my friend.

Thank you so much! Your support has been incredible! I think I just need to brainstorm some new ways to keep interest peaked and keep the audience interactive with it. Of course, that's easier said than done. I have plenty of ideas that I day dream about, I just don't have the means of executing them as a one-man band with no financial means - hahaha... After the few successes of the channel over the summer, I thought I was on the verge of something, but that feeling has went away since then. We shall see.

@@andrewball_ Bottom line, I want to see you succeed here. I think what you're doing is a wonderful nod to our past and you're good at it. Hi Andrew! I don’t think your videos have lessened in quality, they are as great as they always have been. You are a gifted individual who has so much to offer. I really mean that. Soul searching is apart of growing older. Something we have to do to move forward in life. Never blame yourself for the behavior of others because that can be disastrous for so many things including mental health. I’m fairly older and my wisdom may be lacking but surely kids or teens are going back to school so could attribute to lower views. Vacations and such could be an attributable factor as well. A mini break always tends to help me if social media becomes too overwhelming. So maybe it can help you. Remove yourself from the situation and could help put things of importance in the front burner. Here if you need anything, let me know. Happy to help. Sending good energy to you. Be well. ☺️

@moojuiceuk
@moojuiceuk Год назад
The RU-vid algorithm is a strange beast, so it could be partly that to blame. I think you just need to throw a few different concepts out there, see which ones float and which sink. Clearly retro-remake adverts do well (I came here because of the TWA one you did). The appeal of a lot of retro themes is tapping into either genuine nostalgia, or a very good faxsimilie of it that is real enough to become pseudo-nostalgia. That's why the ads work well, because they are good faxsimilies of that golden age but done by someone having fun with it. If you're looking to try new things for the channel, how about the "reaction video" format, but looking at retro content, both stateside and elsewhere in the world. Maybe look to remake classic 80s music videos? There's a lot of scope there for dressing up, larking about, lip-syncing, getting others involved too and probably work well as 30 second TikTok shorts too. Dare you to dress up and remake Kate Bush, Running up that Hill ! Bet that would go well on TikTok. The other thing is to look at a collab with other retro channels or getting friends involved? Might help gain subs. I do love what SkyCorpHomeVideo do for example. Whatever you do though, do it because you enjoy doing it. Never be a slave to the viewcount or subscriber numbers. Cheers :)
@andrewball_
@andrewball_ Год назад
Well, firstly, I agree about the algorithm. I replied to another comment that made mention of that. I said that a lot of these how-to videos for growing a RU-vid channel say to stand out among your niche and competition. While there are other retro-related channels, I can't say I've come across anyone who has done videos like mine, so there isn't much competition out there, and yet the channel still stalls in growth. I just find that funny. I have been trying to think of some new ideas or concepts that I haven't already done, but that can be a difficult thing since they need to remain retro-related. So there isn't much freedom there to branch out like other channels might have the opportunity to do. Also frustrating when I have many ideas I day dream about (many would of them would be like a music video/montage/movie scenes to some 80s songs), but many would be quite a large production that I don't have the ability, financial means, or help to execute.

I enjoy watching all of your videos and I love how dedicated you are to this channel and making great videos. If I had one suggestion for increasing views I would say maybe try brainstorming some longer form videos. Even though they would definitely take more time I think that viewers would appreciate getting even more out of the content. It also gives you more watch time and opportunities to get some laughs.
@andrewball_
@andrewball_ Год назад
I would love to make longer videos, but given my dependency on TikTok to help feed traffic to RU-vid, I try to make as many videos as I can 3 minutes or under so I can post them on both. I just feel that putting a partial video on TikTok and then saying "watch the full video on RU-vid" would not be as helpful as posting full videos on TikTok and in that people would come to RU-vid. I could be wrong. But knowing how I am, if I saw a TikTok that ended in "watch the full video on RU-vid," I would probably keep scrolling. About the only thing I could think of would be to post longer videos exclusively for RU-vid (meaning not posting on TikTok) or making two kinds of videos for both platforms and I don't think I have the time to be able to do that presently. If I wasn't so dependency on TikTok (espcially now that I have a small following), I wouldn't be so concerned about length of videos... might have to brainstorm how to make videos for both.

I've been watching your videos on YT and TK for weeks now, and I can honestly say you're incredibly talented. I've seen lots of 80's revival stuff, but I can always tell it's not authentic, it's a pastiche at best. With you, it's scary good. When I first saw Cooking with Paper, I genuinely had to check if it was a real VHS recording. The sets, the outfits, the furniture, the video, it's all perfect. Also, you're slowly becoming a bit of a drag icon among the alphabet mafia (who are probably the biggest consumers of 80's revival content). YT has been a shitshow for many years, the algorithm just doesn't reward good content. Your following will expand slowly, but the following you have will be around and will ever be hungry for more. You might find better performance on TK so keep crossposting there too. Take some time away and don't get hung up on following a strict video schedule. Keep it a passion project.

Then I found TWA and United etc US air was amazing too! Even the talk shows etc etc but the delta one then drew me to searching and I found all your other amazing retro works!! I think I noticed you did the talk show theme in succession a few times so maybe just throw a new video out with a different theme and switch it up that way? The content isnt the problem it could just be people get bored fast with what they see scrolling in the previews. So maybe to counter this just try different themes and switch it up by not putting something you just did so fast maybe space it with more time thats passed if youre going to do it that way. I just re- watched the other three airlines videos ( twa delta and united) and they all seem to have one common theme throughout and thats the soundtrack or commercial theme song..I think because this last one was more voice over and only towards the end the theme and not throughout like the others could have perhaps resulted in people not recognizing it as much? Context, in 2016 my band started kicking off, overnight our likes on FB went from around 900 to about 6.5k because of some TV exposure. When it happened I spent so long wondering if it would last, if it would grow more, whether we deserved it, that I didn't get down to the crux of the issue - making art for the love of the game. If you make what you love, authentically, you can't lose. I know its hard to detach your brain from the numbers, but if I've realised anything from my brief dalliance with this kind of scenario, that the numbers are a distraction from what really matters. I know this isn't a happy ending really, but I don't play music any more. I make comedy podcasts. A month in I have 19 subscribers and I'm authentically me, and it's the most freeing experience I've ever had. I don't care about the numbers, I don't care about "making it" or "going pro". Thank you for your kind words and your words of wisdom and advice. I am always and forever grateful for the following on here and on TikTok (and all my platforms for that matter). Nor should the numbers and analytics matter. This has just caught me off guard because since the I started the channel (and more so this year specifically) there has always been at least some growth... or at least a leveled off average. This is the first time that I have noticed a considerable decline in interest, so I have just been curious as to why. I think consistency in posting is a good thing, and it has helped my channel a lot this year, but I almost wonder if it's getting to the point where it is hurting. I think the RU-vid algorithm has gotten used to my posting every Friday because looking week-by-week, views peak that Friday or Saturday and then fall over the next week to near nothing by the time the next video is posted. I think that is too much of a coincidence. Especially since there are so many videos on my channel now. Even if the latest video didn't do well, you'd think the dozens of other videos would be pulling in stronger numbers weekly. This shouldn't be taken as complaining. I really am just curious by how this all works and am fascinated by it - especially in seeing trends on my own channel. Makes me wish I could sit down with someone and ask them questions for specifics. As discouraging as it has been, I don't think I will stop - I just might change my ways of how I go about it.
