The Biden Administration’s decision to pause new approvals for liquified natural gas (LNG) export terminals, was one of the biggest energy policy developments in recent years. The Administration argues that the Department of Energy needs time to reassess U.S. LNG's climate impact. Congressional Republicans and many in the energy sector oppose the pause, arguing that the Biden Administration is jeopardizing the economic, geopolitical, and environmental potential of the U.S. LNG industry.
The CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program is pleased to host a discussion on the topic with Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL) and Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA), two of the leading voices on energy and climate change in Congress. The conversation will provide insight into the economic, geopolitical, and environmental dimensions of U.S. LNG exports as well as Democratic and Republican perspectives on the topic.

One of the best discussions I’ve ever heard from CSIS. Both had great points, so much so that I’m not sure whose side I’m supposed to be on. If there was a way to synthesize their views perhaps.

I actually like these smart politicians. We should limit political campaigning and have more of these types of discussions.

It's essential to acknowledge the pivotal role our strength plays in projecting power and addressing global challenges head-on. By leveraging our capabilities, we can alleviate the fears of nations with less capacity, empowering them to take calculated risks without compromising their security. To effectively combat climate change and reduce global carbon emissions, we must be willing to take strategic risks and lift sanctions on countries like Russia. Continuing to restrict their access to innovation and technology only hinders their ability to contribute meaningfully to our collective efforts. By fostering innovation and providing opportunities for economic growth, we can empower nations to become valuable partners in our pursuit of environmental sustainability. This requires a shift away from viewing others as adversaries and towards embracing collaboration and shared responsibility. Our strength lies not only in our military might but also in our ability to lead by example and inspire positive change. Let us seize this opportunity to forge a path towards a more prosperous and sustainable future for all. Sincerely, [Your Name] --- This version emphasizes the importance of leveraging our strength to promote collaboration and shared responsibility in addressing global challenges, particularly in the context of climate change and environmental sustainability.

Seems a misunderstanding that we can turn off natural gas production. If we aren’t using it, it is being flared off as a waste product. I’m also curious how the intend to spin up the electricity grid to support all the new data centers and EV charging stations. This is a foolish argument.

Marvellous discussion. Why aren't one (or both) of these one of the candidates for President this autumn? I'm left-of-centre, so in the spirit of generosity, I'll pick out what Garret Graves (Republican) said for particular praise. He was absolutely right that business invests best when it has continuity, rather than wild swings from one President to the next. So the US (and Britain where I live) needs bipartisan discussions like this to help build consensus where possible.

Tbh most of them are this smart at least regarding their committee areas. The problems are systemic, not from lack of talented people.

@@DeathsOnTheYAxis Imo the problem is a lack of moral courage. It's a common problem in democracies and we've had it in the UK. What these two show is the moral courage to reject partisanship in favour of truth (the truth that real democrats and republicans have more in common than what divides them). That the real enemies are those who would destroy democracy. I'd like the next US president to have that moral courage. (Biden has it, but 80 yrs old is too old)

@@tawektawek3838 It's easy to be civil when you're on a panel in front of an informed audience who are going to listen to your whole argument. The problem is when you're on the House floor and you know that cable news is going to show a 5 second clip out of your whole statement. That's driven the rise of "gotcha" culture and turned Congress into a circus.

Ni conversation, but lets be honest with ourselves and stop trying to turn a blind eye when it comes to the impact climate change is having on ALL of us, including the citizens living in Tornado Ally as well as the southern coast and Florida where we're expecting a record number of hurricanes. Lets drop the BS about who wins here..

The U.S. has only 5% of global natural gas reserves but we export more than any other country. That is strategically stupid.

Don’t believe what many report across the globe are their reserves. And, the definition of reserves over there is different from ours. Ours is economic. There’s is more like resource in place.
