The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
Wine production would be a whole lot easier if we hadn’t imported a bunch of diseases like powdery and downy mildew during colonial times.
At least since then, it is very difficult to grow grapes commercially without using chemicals to protect the vines against disease attacks.
Even certified organic or biodynamic producers usually rely on copper sulfates to protect the vines and very few growers do not require any chemicals at all.
Particularly in cooler or humid wine regions like the classics Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, and Mosel. rain often falls during the harvest and the common grape varieties that are used for the production of wine today are not able to withstand disease pressure without chemicals.
What you need to understand is that pretty much all grape varieties that are used for wine production are from the Vitis vinifera family. They generally produce the best-flavored juice and we have grown accustomed to these grapes.
However, there is a plethora of other Species such as Vitis riparia, Vitis labrusca, Vitis rupestris, and Vitis berlandieri that have varying natural tolerance or resistance to cold weather, mildew, botrytis bunch rot, viruses, and phylloxera.
That is why producers have started experimenting with these varieties and have interbred them with Vitis vinifera types to produce hybrids that combine the best of the two worlds.
The issue remains that, while there are many environmental and economic reasons for using these Hybrid varietals - they tend to produce wines, that… don’t taste great.
I believe though that making great wine out of new varietals always takes time and I, therefore, want to taste a selection Leon made, to see whether they taste any good.

Yes polish wines tend to be quite expensive. A few years ago, the regulations regarding the production of wine for sale changed in Poland (which, surprisingly, was not allowed for many years) and many producers appeared. In addition, there was a bit of a fashion for Polish wine, usually average wine, which is why prices went up strongly.

I quite like Canadian Ice wines: I bought a couple of half bottles of Pillitteri 2019 Vidal Ice Wine. (at Lidl in The Netherlands of all places...). My tasting notes resemble yours, so that's probably down to the grape variety. I would not rate this particular wine at 90 points, perhaps 87/88 but I paid €14,95 per half bottle.....so price/quality was very good. It's a nice change from German Beerenauslese or French Sauternes.

When I was touring Madagascar they have a surprisingly vibrant wine industry with a big focus on grapes like Chambourcin - nothing world class or even really notable, but had plenty of examples of just really solid table wine.

In Brazil, most of the cheap, bulk, table wines and traditional homemade wine is made with American or hybrid grapes. In some production areas they are called “grandpa wines”, since they are what was available a long time ago

For those like myself who live for new experiences and taking a risk, then please try a wine made with Baco Noir. The Baco Noir grape is a cross between Folle Blanche and an unknown member of the New World’s Vitis Riparia family. It is not an easy wine to make as it has a wild side to it. However, it's a robust wine that I really enjoy when I find a good one. It's been making a comeback in recent years and there are now more vinyards growing this grape.

Learned a lot. Appreciate you bringing this topic up. Wine lovers tend to be tradition-bound, which works against necessary innovation. For god sakes, we can’t even fully accept screw top, much less alternative packaging. But…we need to! Hybrid will fight the same battle to penetrate the market.

Hybrid Wines are a pretty interesting topic I think we just need a few more years for the styles to mature and get a some more variations and for the producers to learn how to handle the grapes. With normal Wines producers had a really long time find the best way for each grape and get every step right just give it some and look out for promising producers

The hybrid grape breeding programs at both the University of Minnesota and Cornell University have bred varieties that are worth checking out. From Minnesota, try Frontenac Noir and Marquette; from Cornell try Traminette, for starters. Also, from Missouri, try the native variety Cynthiana/Norton. This makes a full bodied, slightly smokey red wine that's quite good.

There is a relatively new winery near me La Nouie Dubois that is south of Montrose Colorado, USA that is starting to produce some interesting wines. I know the winemaker and he and I talk fairly regularly. All his vineyard is all hybrid grapes with many of the hybrids coming from Alsace. The vinyard is around 5400 ft in elevation and it does get very cold. I am looking forward to driving down there this week and walk the vineyard and do some tastings.

Please do a winetasting of Swedish hybrid grape wines - in the past few years they have gone from terrible to okay to actually good. I'd be especially keen to see you taste something from Kullabergs Vingård, but mind you they are hard to get by as they only release small quantities of different wines throughout the year (which often sell out quickly), but look for their Lyckeri, Immelen, or Josefinelust Brut. You also have other winemakers like Lottenlund Estate, Flyinge Vingård and Skepparp with their Grand Prix sparkling wine.

Thanks for doing a video on hybrids. It's good to open the discussion here, as some people love them, others hate them. They have their advantages and disadvantages. But I think it's good to be open for experimenting with new stuff. After all, a lot of the grapes we love are (natural) hybrids (like cab sauv or merlot) or mutants ( pinot Gris, blanc etc) and someone once decided to invest in them

I agree with you that so often hybrids are not harmonious. A lot of them are to me curiosities as to what people drank right after the various diseases killed off vinifera world wide. The non-vinifera wine I think is most interesting is Norton, which I think is actually not a hybrid owing to it not having any identifiable vinifera DNA. The Norton my wife and I think is the best by far is Stone Hill from Hermann, Missouri. We recently had a 2016 that has been in our magic basement for maybe 5 years and I would rate it with the top tier of Cabernet Sauvignons. Stone Hill is on a mission to perfect Norton and makes adjustments every year. They do things no one else I know of does, and adjust every year. They have been in business since 1847 (time out for Prohibition, etc.) and have grown Norton probably since the beginning. They have Norton vines planted in the 1860's that only produce enough grapes for wine occasionally but the wine is spectacular when they do. If you are able to get some bottles I recommend letting them sit in a cold cellar for as long as you can before opening, it doesn't travel well, in my opinion. This sounds like a Stone Hill commercial, but we don't even live in Missouri. Ten years ago we traveled the east and tasted Nortons from Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia and Missouri looking for the best and Stone Hills was best by a wide margin, and they continue to improve year by year.

I think perhaps it would be useful to taste even more hybrid wines…. I’m not sure such a small sample is representative to make a judgement… the Nordic countries are producing more and more and quality is going up. So in order to make statements, maybe sampling quote a bit more would be useful…. As you sit in an important position and have big out reach, I think it would be interesting and also useful for the wineries and consumers to gain a more in depth look… salute

Thanks Konstantin! Have been looking forward to a video on Hybrids! In my opinion Hybrids are a great addition in the wine industry. Quality is very much dependent on the producer and maybe terroir (There is not much information on which varieties do well in which terroir). Who knows what quality can be reached with hybrids planted on grand cru site and a good winemaker. Here in Holland quality has increased a lot since we know what to plant and more knowledge in wine making.

So far I haven't had a 100% hybrid varietal wine, but I have had the Frauke Cuvee Weiss from Weingut am Kaiserbaum in the Pfalz in Hammel--Hundinger. According to their website the 2019 of this wine has 65% Cabernet Blanc with 15% Riesling. I had the 2014 vintage two years ago and it was better after 7 years in the bottle. (I don't know the ratio of Riesling to Cabernet Blanc in the 2014 vintage) I looked at my tasting notes: "red apples, flint, apricots, acacia, grass, honey, flint, etc" So it seems that hybrid wines do have the potential to make good wines; it just seems to be a work in progress. I do hope for the sake of the environment and the people that work in the vineyard more progress can be made more quickly, as winemaking needs to become more sustainable. Great video, informative as well as interesting.

My grandparents used to produce wine from Clinton grapes (an hybrid between Vitis labrusca and Vitis riparia) from their own consumption - I inherit my love for wine from them and I've created my blog (winesandjoy) to honour them... Last year, if I recall correclty, there was an opening in terms of law in Italy about wine made from hybrid grapes and not only from Vitis vinifera (the law in Italy was created around 1931 to protect businesses) so I assume, and hope, winemakers will start to play a bit with hybrid grapes, maybe starting with IGT labels as sort of experiment

Henry of Pelham makes the most famous Baco (& Baco Reserve), but my most memorable was a 1997 Hernder Baco. Wow...rich, tannic, oaky. Maybe I'd think less of it now, but at the time it seemed the quintessential Canadian red :-) Not at all "hybridy"...at least not in a bad way.

Vidal ice wines from near Niagara are usually available before Christmas here in somewhat-southern Florida, 375ml usually US$20 to 25. Lots of Canadians spend winter here. Vinifera vines die of Pierce’s Disease fairly quickly here in Florida. V. rotundifolia is a native grape and wine from its fruit doesn’t taste much like vinifera, but it isn’t susceptible to the disease. There is at least one hybrid between vinifera and rotundifolia that is sometimes used for making wine, but the wine is in my experience more like rotundifolia wine than vinifera and not particularly good.

I'd love to try ice wines. They just seem so interesting to me, but with so much sugar and me being diabetic, it's not something I could drink regularly.

If you are ever in the netherlands you should try some dutch hybrid wines. Personally I find the classic grape varietial dutch wines better, but as you said in the video these new hybrid wines can grow in quality and I have tasted some solaris and souvignier gris wines that were better than I expected.

5 yrs is getting kinda old for a Vidal icewine. They are generally best the first few years. Also...not a big fan of Reif, though it's been a good while since I've tried anything of theirs. It's almost an oxymoron, but I've definitely had some bad and mediocre icewines. But the good & great ones are life-changing :-) Usually Riesling, but I've had a few Vidal at that level. One had a striking beeswax component. Many are unbelievably rich in tropical fruit. Jost in Nova Scotia made a stunning oak-aged(!) icewine...maybe Vidal...or some other hybrid(s). One in my cellar :-) I've also had a few beautiful & complex RED icewines from BC & Ontario. HOW do they DO that????? Perhaps the skins have to be thoroughly pressed out before they're allowed to be added back to the must??

It’s good to see Polish wine represented in this bracket but that’s not the best Poland has to offer in terms of wine. White, orange and sparkling are by far better categories. Reds are challenging but you can find decent examples of zweigelt and Pinot Noir. Since 2008 our winemaking grew from 14 wineries to 447 so it’s rather rapid growth. There is a lot to discover 🌝

Interesting topic. I’m a bit disappointed that none of the wines could justify its price, but I understand that hybrid grapes are still a “new” thing, and winemakers are mostly experimenting with them still. Are there any renowned winemakers working with hybrids now? It might be worth checking those labels out, if they exist.

I would be most interested in an issue on Eisweins.. I guess they tend to be a bit pricey because of the heightened risk of a season's product not turning out well.. I shall be looking out for hybrid wines now I've seen this! Nice one Konstantin. 🍷🌟👍

they are pricey because it's much hard work (in really unfriendly conditions..) to get a very small amount of wine

Would love to see you rate / critique the wine kits that you can make yourself. From cheap ones to what is considered their best premium vines etc. I've made a ton of them and find that blending them works best for a decent taste for a budget and aging them on oak/char seems to create something quite good. Thoughts?

I have had Swedish wine made out of the grape Solera which is some sort of super hybrid, it's like 2 different hybrid grapes which have again been "merged". I think it's got riesling, pinot gris, Muscat and some french table grape. I've tried 3 different ones and they were all quite expensive and downright not good. bleh

Nice topic to cover. Thank you for diving into those unique varietals. One question. Maybe I am wrong, but you seem to take into account price when providing a final score. If that is the case, would the Canadian ice wine earn a higher score at a lower price point? Cheers, John
@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Год назад
No, the score itself has nothing to do with the price, but in the end you always have to see the score (quality) in relation to the price when deciding what you want to put on your shelves.

Before I watched this video I had no idea Vidal was a hybrid grape.. and I’d downed some bottles of Canadian Icewine! This is an intriguing topic that I know pretty much nothing about, it does seem to be a step in the right direction for sustainability and lowering the environmental impact, though for the consumer taste is king. On another note, would love to see you do a deep dive into sweet wines and the different ways of concentrating sugars (late ripening, bortrytis, appassimento, freezing on the vine etc), as well as how their taste profiles vary as a result. Cheers and thanks for another great video!

I've been reading a lot about hybrids and non-vinifera wine making in the USA recently. There is one producer out of Vermont that there is a LOT of buzz around, La Garagista. I live in Maryland, USA. The wine industry here is very much supported by hybrid varietals. In fact, Vidal Blanc is one of the most grown grapes here. Chamboucin is grown a lot here too. Growers and winemakers have been working with them since the mid 1940s, and there are some that make decent representations. I also recently heard a lecture talking about being able to isolate the foxy gene and remove it from future plantings.

Many of us in the northeast grow hybrids because of their cold tolerance. One -15F degree day here this winter (35 miles north of Boston). Hybrids such as Brianna are the backbone of our wines.

Have heard that it should be pretty easy to produce ice wine in Canada and the US because there it seems to be allowed to freeze the grapes by atrificial cooling? Am I right with this? Have tried lots of hybrid wines. Also had a Cabernet blanc wich was pretty good but there was only one variety that was really on the level of traditional varieties and that was Muscaris which is a real alternative to yellow Muscat which you definitely should try out.

As far as I know they aren’t allowed to freeze them artificially. This method is allowed in many other new world countries though

Along the same thread of varietals and their use in the future, what is your opinion on alternative wine packaging? Can humans ignore the perceived(?) quality difference that a glass bottle imparts?
@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Год назад
Yes, bottles need to get lighter and alternatives are becoming more and more important, too. I am guessing it will take a looong time though before higher end wines are package in anything but a glass bottle.

We have a winery here in Virginia, Loving Cup, working with only hybrid grapes that actually convinced me that hybrid wines are worth looking into. Their Pet Nat in particular could go up against any conventional counterpart in my opinion.
