The Galaxy Railways - Takeoff Procedures (HD)

Well, the whole concept is a bit confusing for some people, most people see a flying train and go "huh?!" And I'll admit the series doesn't really go to any lengths to explain the hows and whys of the Galaxy Railways network, it's all just there and you roll with it and get on enjoying the show, or you stop watching after five minutes because the flying trains just don't compute for you.. Basically what needs to be made clear for most folks is that this is set in the far future, where machines can take virtually any shape, hence the space train. A space train is really an advanced starship, but it has the shape of a train and operates like a train since that's a shape practically everyone is familiar with, and the whole concept of a railway is very nostalgic and appealing, plus having trains instead of ocean-liner sized ships has its own advantages. A steam space train runs on steam and behaves like a steam loco, a diesel space train behaves like a diesel loco, etc. The tech is so advanced that it allows this retro-look and function while still allowing the starship to traverse the cosmos. This design method of "familiar and/or retro on the outside, ultra-advanced on the inside" extends to all sorts of other things in the setting of the story. Take Old Man Whitman's wrench, it's a crescent wrench, but it has electronic displays and a gauge on it similar to what's inside the engine room a space train, so it could be that it's hyper-advanced on the inside, it might even be a multi-tool like a Swiss Army knife and able to change functions or have things pop out of it like R2-D2's gadgets. It looks like a wrench (and most of the time it IS a wrench), because that's a familiar shape, and it would be appropriate to what a mechanic would need most of the time. Happy to share, I'm a big fan of this anime!

Coal-fired or nuclear-fired, Big One still runs on the same basic mechanics either way: An extremely hot energy source provides heat energy to water, boiling it into steam to power pretty much everything on the train. Nuclear reactors may be using a different fuel from the first steam engines, but they still follow the same idea of a heat source boiling water into steam. Maybe Big One's tender is filled with coal, maybe it's actually uranium, but it (he?) is still a steam locomotive. A jacked-up super-powered steam locomotive with additional electronics and stuff attached.

(And I believe the term is "she", as the trains are often referred to as "ships", from the old nautical tradition, also in common railway usage to call a loco " she" or "the auld girl") A steam space train is still basically a steam train, and they're used as such.In Engine Song during old man Whitman's flashbacks, we get to see a roundhouse with several steamers in residence, and off in the background they can been seen pulling trains along the ground railway lines on tracks, as well as taking on water at the water tank and going onto the turntable to be spun around and serviced. Aside from the launch rails to go to and from space out in the distance, the whole scene wouldn't have looked out of place back in the steam era on Earth. Pity half the planet disintegrated because the electromagnetic ore they were mining there was so unstable...

+Shipwright1918 / +MLManimasters ( Some reason YT won't let me reply to your comments, strange. ) Anyway, I'm sure the only reason they referred to Big One as a he is both due to homage upon its early predecessors ( The Union Pacific Big Boys, as I'd assume they were also referred to as male due to their name, lol. ), along with reference towards Season Two of The Galaxy Railways, as "Neo" Big One's AI were voiced by a male. Then again, this kind of contradicts what happened in Season One, as in the dub the AI voice sounds very feminine during Episode One, when it rammed that Alfort destroyer cruiser.

I agree but the saying, Ahead full is mostly a term meant for modes of transportations with multiple engines like an ocean liner or steam ships like titanic. The big one train is only pulled by one engine which is big one itself. That's why we don't here the engineer or driver of our modern locomotives yell out, ahead full, half ahead or ahead slow.

None are correct anyway. The first one is...whatever that is...sounds like an elephant. The second one is a 5 chime you can hear on the Japanese steamers. The real Big Boys use Hancock 3 chime whistle

Are you talking about my front canon? Yes I was given a canon during my second rebuild. The SDF thought that my main battery/fighter coach wasn't enough to shoot down enemy ships as I lost my main battery during the battle.
