The infamous 40-3 Peach Bowl loss to LSU is what kicked Miami out of the college football elite permanently - while for Florida State it was the next season's infamous 30-0 home loss to Wake Forest that effectively ended the Bowden era.
I know I'm late to this but had to add my 2 cents. You're not wrong on any of this from a Miami fan's perspective. This season was the culmination of fears we'd seen begin in '03 and '04. We knew we still had some dudes, but Coker was just doing absolutely nothing with them. It also just so happened that I graduated high school and shipped off to boot camp that November. That LSU Peach Bowl game was my reintroduction to society on a cold snowy night in Great Lakes. It really symbolized the end of my childhood. Things were going to be different now and they were going to be hard.
I remember after Butch Davis left, the U considered hiring Barry Alvarez from Wisconsin since Donna Shalala, who was the school president at the time, had previously been Wisconsin's president and was friends with him. Word got out and the players wanted Coker, so they backed down and hired him. Short term, he was the right guy for that particular group. Long term, he wasn't the right guy.
Miami fan but I very much remember Ernie Sims. Dude was HIGHLY touted going into both college and nfl. His career ended surprisingly quietly but 8 years in the NFL is still very impressive!
Wow Ernie Sims! Havent heard that name in awhile! In high school, i was a big high school football nerd. I'd buy the Dave Campbells Texas Football every year back then. So i always kinda root for the kids that graduated around the same year as me, 20o5. Ernie Sims was the #1 linebacker, and i don't know if u remember a #1 WR one of those years who went to Florida State, Fred Rouse lol. He was supposed to be the next Randy Moss. Also Ryan Perilooux was the next great dual-threat QB. And the #1 player of my class, "utility player" Derrick Williams who went to Penn State, he was also supposed to be the next great WR.
@@jasongodek9828 that’s what happens when the leadership stops caring about football and everything that goes into having a successful program. Hopefully the resources are there now.
The UM-FSU game where Miami (FL) upset their rivals from Tallahassee when Jim Burt knocked down a pass attempt to notch a two point conversion opened the 1980 season
Right, everyone born after like 2000 would look at you crazy when you tell them that Miami vs Florida State used to be THE GAME. It was always at the start of the season and they both were usually ranked Top 5, Top 10. I remember having to work one night the game was on and setting my VCR to record it lol
Great recap! I’m a Miami fan and there was so much hype going into this game. Awful execution in every aspect of the game. 2005 was the beginning of the end for Miami.
I was 9 and it was my first time watching FSU, actually understanding how the game works and such. They mentioned it had been years since we beat them and when we beat them, especially in the manner it happened, I remember jumping with glee. Nearly 20 years later, and this game still means a lot.
Bruh I’ve been an FSU fan my entire life. Went to fsu from 97-2001 & got to watch these programs trade blows at their peak. One thing I gotta give Miami props for- Warren Sapp & Ray Lewis. They’ve had PLENTY of other elite dudes buuuuut I distinctly remember watching those 2 guys & being like “fuuuuuck me…how can ANYONE stop them” Dudes were HIM
That's awesome. I have about 7 to 8 years on you. I did my first two years at GCCC in Panama City and transferred to Tallahassee in the the Fall of 1993. What a glorious time to be a Florida State Seminole!
This game was not so much a defensive battle, but one where the offenses and special teams were so inept that they made the defenses look good. Both these programs were on the slide at this point, with nowhere near the talent from the previous decade, and it showed. Virginia Tech was becoming the best team in the conference.
Miami fan here.. just want to point something out: in the beginning of the video, when explaining why this rivalry was so great, you discuss all the talent that played in it….. You should’ve mentioned Bobby Bowden. How people viewed these two teams was largely driven by coach Bowden. Coach Bowden will always have a special place in the hearts of any UM fan who was there during those days.
Miami fan here too. I just could not help but loving Coach Bowden, in sharp contrast with what we all felt for Lou Holtz... In a way, in the period 1986-1990, the FSU rivalry was a sort of a family feud, a quarrel between cousins. The real hate was reserved for the Irish.
This is what I miss, Gators ,Noles and,Canes all legit title contenders. Elevates football to the highest level in the state of Florida. There is nothing like it in college football.
@@904Hurricaneas a Gator fan. I'm in the minority because I wish the Gators would leave the SEC for the ACC to be in the same conference as Florida State and Miami
@@AvrilAlvarez I root for the Dolphins, Bucs, and Jags ! Same thing with college football, I root for Fsu, Florida and Miami ! I would absolutely love that idea ! We both know it will never happen unfortunately.
I'm never a fan of having rivalry games that early in the season. It doesn't make much sense from a business perspective or a fan perspective, in my opinion. Two good programs, and one of their seasons is over right as the season starts.
The end of Florida State came when they started losing assistants, most notably Chuck Amato. When Chuck went to NC State he squashed all the bullying the Noles were doing in the ACC. Up until that point, they were stomping on everybody’s logo. I’m not even sure that anyone was paying attention to that, but Chuck KNEW that’s what they were doing and made sure his players put a stop to it. He effectively took FSU’s swag, and they never got it back!!!
Facts. I grew up here in Tally rooting for FSU since way before the dynasty. My dad used to tell me “they are still your team, you support them.” Well, we supported and Bobby delivered via Chuck, Mickey Andrews and the like. When we lost Chuck and Mickey, we lost the program
Lary coker crashed the porsche. And the school was stuck in a time warp and stopped investing and caring about the team. College football left miami behind when the admin thought it was still 2001. It was a collective fail by the university to let football slip to the backburner while the rest if college football continued to advance and evolve. It wasnt till 2022 when they realized their massive failure and began caring about football again and its starting to show some results from their investment into the program. Cant wait to read this again in the future and see how that investment turned out. Good or bad.
As an FSU fan since I was born 46 years ago, I thought Miami…no, no….I KNEW we’d be fearing Miami forever. Now that the FSU/Florida rivalry has simmered down… Just remember…there was a 12 year period where you had to go through the state of Florida to get to the National Championship. You had to beat FSU, Miami, and/or Florida. I hoped it would be that way forever
@@mikehuff9793 I agree and as much as I don't want to see FSU or Florida win one, I also much rather it stay how it was where the big 3 were always contenders and powerhouses any given year. It's better for all 3 of us when all 3 of us are good. It's better for college football. It'll happen again one day though, college football is cyclical and it's bound to turn around eventually.
Miami and Florida State were the SEC before the SEC became the “SEC”. The SEC in the early 2000s was somewhat down. Spurrior left Florida, Alabama was dealing with major recruiting violations, Georgia was somewhat down after the Jim Donnan years
@@BAYAREA-kd1ig i thought he took over in 2000 so my bad but my other point still stands. As soon as it picked up for Georgia then Florida had its down years before Meyer took over so they basically traded spots in the east
As an FSU fan those Jeff Bowden 2000 teams on offense were brutal. I remember this game and how horrible it was but we were so desperate for a win I took it. And there was a lot of laughs Miami lost on a failed FG. Also I remember that Miami LSU game and agree it was the end. Not only did they lose the fight on the field but lost the fight in the tunnel after the game. One suggestion if you want a truly brutally bad rivaly game. The 2011 FSU\UF game. The offenses in this FSU\Miami game look like amazing to what happened that night in an FSU win.
You say it killed the rivalry?… Goes deeper than that. That was the end of the “State of Florida” era. Up to that point, you had to beat two of the three teams in Florida (FSU, Florida, Miami) to get to the National Championship.
By 2007 both programs were an afterthought. During the NFL Draft it’d been the first time in decades there wasn’t a player from either school picked in round one.
Xavier Lee was supposed to be next Michael Vick, he graduated around same time as me, 2005. I think 04 or 06, Lee was the #1 dual-threat QB in high school, i was hyped to watch him play at Florida State, but Drew Weatherford was always the starter over him. Xavier Lee barely played, and i think there was like a month in his RD sophmore season where he played well and was a starter. But he couldn't maintian any consistency
Even if you are not doing this series anymore, may I present the 1994 Freedom Bowl between my Arizona Wildcats and Utah Running Utes. It should have been a good game since these two schools had good beef between them and history when Arizona played in the WAC. But it was a dud at 16-13. What makes this game terrible is that Arizona was picked to win the title by Sports Illustrated. They went 8-3 but were still respectable. They completely dominated Utah, who maybe had 80 yards of offense. And they still lost. What makes it even worse is that the game was in Anaheim, and the two teams couldn’t even half full the stadium. This game was so bad it ended the Freedom Bowl in an era where there were not too many bowl games. Arizona lost to two WAC schools that year, which was unheard of at the time by PAC-10 schools. Anyway, the game is on RU-vid, and you can go ahead and make fun of Dan White’s throwing motion and Ontiwaun Carter’s lack of field vision.
Please make another one of these for the 2024 Duke vs NW. I have watched block punts that turn into missed field goals in the red zone and terrible turnovers.
Miami fan here. I don't think you can pinpoint this game as to why the rivalry isn't as hype as it used to be(at least to ppl outside the rivalry). We started going downhill the longer we kept Coker around & Butch Davis left us with so many sanctions(thanks Shapiro) that we still haven't recovered from it. P.S. the dude's hands were clearly out of bounds when he jumped on the muffed punt.
The biggest issue this game was the QBs. White and Weatherford have to be two of the most unremarkable QBs in the history of both programs. There was plenty of defensive talent on both sides but it shouldn’t have been a slugfest.
Agreed, especially with FSU. As bad as the playcalling and gameplanning from Jeff Bowden might've been, I can at least understand why he didn't open things up. There was no way he could trust Weatherford or Xavier Lee coming off the bench.
My first Miami (fl) v FSU game was courtesy of free tickets i got from burger king just for buying a whopper. I also, by the way, got a bright orange windbreaker that was probably highly flamable. In other words, i have seen a lot when it comes to this series. From 1980 and Jim Burt saving the game against two time orange bowl participant FSU to 2003 (1995-1999 being the lopsided exceptions given the dennis erickson ncaa penalties imposed on Butch Davis), this really was as compelling a series as possible on the national level.
Excellent recap - ya know your stuff. One exception to “worst game” is that in this contest FSU was on a bad losing streak to Miami and they finally got the monkey off their back - so for an FSU fan wasn’t the worst - but yea, for a CFB fan I 100% agree it was a snooze fest lol
Agreed. Outside of the 2009 season opener, the 2003 rain game was probably the last best in the series. 2003 matchup was the last game that still had that "Rivalry Mystique."
@@adangbe Agreed. The years 2003 and before they played the games during the day and it felt more exciting, more rivalry-esque. It lost that "mystique" when they moved the game to the primetime slot on Labor Day. That was never a tradition of this rivalry.
I was watching this clip and when I saw that call on the sideline fumble recovery-I watched this game on TV back in the day. It was in 2005, in my defense
I was there and I will never forget this game. The whole game was nothing but anxiety 😂😂😂comedy of errors 😂 Jeff was the worst thing to happen to FSU coaching 😂
6:36 ACC protected rivals both made it to the conference title game 3 times in 17 years. 2007: Virginia Tech > Boston College 2008: Virginia Tech > Boston College 2009: Georgia Tech > Clemson Clemson also beat Virginia Tech in a rematch in the ACC Championship in 2011
Man. FSU had some HIGHLY recruited backs. I remember being little trying to find Lorenzo Booker highlights on AOL. Leon Washington and Antone smith were absolute studies and not utilized correctly. And horrible QB play.
Great video. I'm actually a fan of both teams and I forgot how bad that game was. Both teams had some talent but not experience and went on to play much better the rest of the season. As for Miami, not only did they lose to LSU in the Peach Bowl, but they started a fight in the tunnel (some genius had both teams sharing the same tunnel to get to their lockerrooms) and also lost the fight! As for Mussberger's perviness, the girl he ogled is Jenn Sterger who went on to become semi famous as well as infamous for an incident involving Brett Favre when she was the Jets sideline reporter. As far as this game being the impetus for the demise of both programs, well it depends what you mean. This game didn't cause that. But it probably coincided with it. Miami has not gotten back to the same level since, for a variety of reasons, including the rising of UF and then the resurgence of FSU. FSU did win a Natty in 2013, and played for one in 2014. FSU won 10 games last year and is the favorite to win the ACC. FSU has a legit Heisman candidate and is a darkhorse for the natty. FSU still has the most ACC championships, and Miami has none. One criticism - Gary Danielson didn't just have a random shout out. He was alluding to Michigan's Chris Webber who famously called a timeout that didn't exist to lose the 1993 basketball national championship to Duke. I'll give you a pass because you were so young.
Not sure if it’s intentional. But the ABC scorebug didn’t have rankings by the teams in the 1st half. Then they put 9 & 14 by their team names, almost like “yeah we have no idea how with how this game’s going, but this is a top 15 matchup believe it or not”
FSU fan and I agree with this. I remember something different about this game. I felt in the play calling and offensive play. For years I saw the defense carry the offense during the Rix era but then I saw difference between them.
2005 was a great game. FSU had a winning season in 2017. FSU and Miami(FL) were both ranked in the Top 10 in 2013, too. Your research is garbage. You must be a Miami(FL) fan if you think this game was the worst.
@@ColtonDenning It's really telling how much these videos are worth when you can't even get the basics right. I mean you didn't even have to mention it in the video, but you did and you got it wrong.
The 97% thumbs up rate on the video is probably a bit more telling on what they're worth :). Also, I mention at 25:21 that they were both ranked in 2013, but thank you for watching and taking time out of your Sunday to be a fan of the channel.
@@ColtonDenning People like all sorts of junk, factual or not, often because they don't know any better. Do you know how many RU-vid movie critics get basic details wrong? Likes don't mean it's good. It doesn't make your videos any less wrong. You didn't mention that they were ranked *in the Top 10.* You said the series died out because they weren't competing for national championships with the win when that was just wasn't the case in 2013. You could make the same argument that the "golden era" of the series died in any of the games 2001-2004, too. Both FSU and Miami(FL) fell off before 2005.
Didn't say the series died out. I said the golden era of it did, and it took 8 years between this game and 2013 for another Miami-FSU game to matter nationally, and they haven't played in another one since, so yeah - I'm comfortable with the argument I made. But again, thank you for watching and then engaging repeatedly in something you don't like. That's a W I'll gladly take.
It really boils down to Miami leadership (administration). If the leadership wanted a consistent top 5 program, best believe there would be one. Why doesn't Miami have its own stadium?
I honestly think the fall of The U began in '02. Coker's teams just about always came out sleep walking; '02 Fiesta Bowl, '03 Florida, West Virginia and Virginia Tech.
I don't know about that. Miami went 12-1 in 2002, had two Heisman candidates, and were the best team in the country only losing when screwed by a ref in overtime. I'd say '05 is better indicator of their fall. '02 was a great team, and 03/04 were still pretty damn good.
Miami fan here. Many things went wrong for Miami. Starting from Butch leaving for... the Browns of all people. Then, the steady decline under Coker. Then, sactions. Then, third rate coaches. Then, leaving the Orange Bowl, making de facto play all games on the road. Then... then... NIL and transfer portal came, and maybe, just maybe, the Canes can be back mobilizing the big money from Miami. Just a thing: Most Canes fans miss Bowden, he seemed to be the typical lovable uncle/gandpa we always enjoyed.
The 2004 game was unbearable to watch as a FSU fan. The defense was gassed in the overtime. However, no one game, especially in 2005 was the reason the rivalry is no longer nationally relevant. That is for both teams to create.
Kids today will never understand just how talented these two teams were. I'll take 01 Miami and 93/99 FSU over just about anyone. And you're right, Sims was one of the most highly touted recruits of the decade. He kinda failed to live up to his hype, and he was a top 10 pick 😂 that's how good he was in high school. Ryan Moore is another one, he and Kyle Wright were supposed to be the next great combo. Neither ended up being very good, at all. The inability to hit on top recruits really became a problem for Miami after Butch left. Coker coasted for a few seasons with his talent, but it was over. Jeff Bowden was such a boring playcaller.. 3 straight runs up the middle from the two yard line? Jesus christ man, try a rollout 😂
Love the nostalgia. I had just turned 21 y/o and became a father this same wk (9.6.05). Now my son is a college baseball player. Where’d the time go??? First thing I think of is the Jen Sterger getting noticed by Brent Musberger moment when I recall watching this live (shout out to Mississippi welfare bandit, Brett MAGA Favre 💩). Wasn’t quite the 90’s FSU/Miami games we’d become accustomed to.
Give Miami some slack they were 24-0 in the previous 2 seasons before this My Buckeyes beat them in the championship and they have not been the same til this day
Larry Coker killed Miami more than anyone else-Coker inherited a roster full of future All Stars and NfL Pros from Butch Davis. By 2005 Coker had long since ran out of Butch's players anymore important the assistant coaches. The next season 2006 the wheels came off and except for a spark here and there the dynasty was done. Today all hope lies with Mario Cristobal.
