My girlfriend knocked my GBA off the table last month. Chipped the glass lens I had put on that came with my IPS screen. Replaced it with another glass lens a week ago. That roll cage is looking pretty tempting to me now. :P
The fact that I've personally already seen so many of the products you have featured in this series has really made me feel quite thankful for my childhood. I'm not joking.
@Michael Persico I'm pretty sure it's a fault with the entire audio circuitry, not just the headphone jack. The only difference is you can't hear it on the internal speaker. For the actual reason why, it's because of slight power supply voltage fluctuations. The AGB CPU outputs the sound as a PWM stream of 1s and 0s without using a separate low-noise power source as is often done.

@@billy-waynejeffcoat4828 How old are YOU? Their Dreamcast pad is actually excellent. It's got 6 two-tone face buttons, as opposed to stock pad's 4 buttons with recessed letters, a very smooth ALPS stick with rubber top, as opposed to the for better or worse unique SEGA stick with a shaky plastic top, rubber overmoulded grips which have not become a stinky sticky mess by now but still look and feel like day 1, and it doesn't have any of the connection glitches Joytech and other junk pads do. It lacks the unique Hall Effect technology but otherwise they put a lot of effort into it, more than that new Dreamcast pad that came out recently. From the same era, their racing wheel is not nearly as well made, it's got issues, but its mechanical return system felt pretty good for the time. Their rumble pack for Dreamcast was stronger than SEGA's and had a light, so while it wasn't quite as refined, it was lots of fun and much better than all other third party ones.
@@SianaGearz old enough to know 95% of things they've done was awful. Sure I was slightly exaggerating when I say everything but I'm not far off. I enjoyed their r.a.t.t. pc mouse, like you seemed to enjoy their dreamcast controller. But denying that 95% of the things they put out wasn't garbage your lying to yourself.
You put in rechargeable batteries they are usually 1.2 volts vs the 1.5 volts from regular batteries, some amps don't work well with the lower voltage just food for thought..
Oh dear, I had a similar Mad Catz faceplate (it was just white). I used it for a few weeks and then the "analogue stick" broke on one direction and I took it off.
If you wanna take the hum out of that, install a dehumm dehiss kit. It's amplafying the sound of the CPU. Nintendo just refused to filter out the CPU noise since the DMG.
I remember when I had a GBA light it was a advanced one. The light came with a film which made the screen matte which didn't make the light glare. It was great and I loved it. I dont remember if it was batter powered or GBA powered.

great video as always! fyi a woofer is the part of a speaker that produces mid-to-low range frequencies; the high-range frequencies are produced by what's called a tweeter. a subwoofer produces sub-bass frequencies that are more felt than heard. hopefully that gives you more clarity on why it sounds as clear as it does!
My little brother had the roll cage on his GBA. He went through three different ones before he was forced to use that. It actually helped protect the screen when he dropped it.
Stick a tiny bit of self-adhesive light-defusing film on that light, and I bet it would work far better, while still being able to open and close. It would probably help with the glare as well.
I had a speaker addon for my GBC, it drained batteries quicker than the GBC itself. I did use it quite a lot though, as it added stereo and made the sound way louder. All in all a very useful addon. In fact I find myself wishing such addons still exist today, with the often low volume the games are hardcoded to in 3DS and sometimes Switch games (1st party Nintendo titles are notorious for this) and the already lacking speaker volume of the 3DS (even the headphone volume is sometimes lacking because of how low the volume is hardcoded in some games). The Switch speakers can get plenty loud though, when the games allow for it. But I often find myself wanting just a bit louder audio when I am wearing headphones in stuff like Pokemon when there's a catchy song playing (battle music or whatever) and I want to turn the volume up a couple notches, but I can't because it's already maxed out. But the thing that bothers me, is that the sound effects are way too loud compared to the music, so when you actually have the music loud enough, you will nearly go deaf from the sound effects, like the shrieks of Pokemon and the move sounds. At least 3rd party games often have separate music and sound effects sliders. That's something Nintendo needs to start doing.
I had a flip light similar to the one there, made my madcats, but also had a magnifier on it. Was pretty usefull for long trips on airplanes before the times of backlit screens.
Judging by the size and sound the "mini woofer" is more than likely just a pretty standard full range speaker, like one you'd see in a laptop. If it was a subwoofer by definition, you'd probably have your gameboy vibrating and not too much else, which would be kind of funny. It's pretty impressive that it does vibrate the enclosure, but that probably also serves as a testament to the build quality. I wonder how many of those accessories that use the port and have a pass through that you can connect up to each other before there's an issue? Maybe something fun to play around with in another video.
I had the flip light when I was really young. Even as a 3 or 4 year old, I understood that it sucked and if you wanted to play anything before the SP at night, just get one of those clip on reading lights. The reading lights were cheaper and usually had a twisty neck on them so you could adjust where the light is. They were also tiny and bright enough to illuminate at least a whole page of a book.
That flip light used to be a required piece of kit, back when castlevania SOTN looked like dark figures on a black screen and you couldn't play it out of direct sunlight. We're spoiled with backlit IPS screens today but back then the only real alternative was from a guy who sold a LED side-light kit you had to solder yourself after removing bits of the case with a dremel. Might have been the Afterburner mod, honestly I don't remember.
I had the worm light light for my gba that was bendable and you could position just as you needed it so you got no glare and the entire screen was lit up, and it was tiny and compact as it was just a bendable wire with a light on it. It made the mad catz light shown here look massive! It had a very wide beam of light so you could see the screen no problem!
The light is adjustable. I had the same one and it can be nudged around a bit to eliminate the glare. I also had the same thing for the GBC. which was better because it was just a curly wire. Look it up if you haven't seen it.
That roll cage isn't *entirely* useless. It will certainly protect the plastic lens from dents and scratches from being placed face down or dropped. And those plastic lenses were pretty easy to scratch, as I remember.
The "NXT" technology on the "Mini Woofer" is actually a thing, it's a flat-panel speaker driver that doesn't require an enclosure to operate. Sadly the NXT company doesn't exist anymore. The low frequency vibrations are more like what a tactile transducer would give off (although not as low given this is really a wide-range speaker) whereas a subwoofer would require a large amount of airspace and would output audible deep bass in the 20-80Hz range.
1:17 holy shit the moment you pulled that out and held it I remembered that I knew a kid with this!!! We couldn't figure out how to put it on back then (we were 11) so he just had it loose in his GBA carry bag
I actually just picked up a wormlight for the original GBA for about $12 cad, and I was impressed with how well it works. You have the flexibility to angle it in such a way to light about 90% of the screen without glare. Its nowhere near as good as my AGS-101, but I feel like the image you see ends up being truer then the washed out AGS 001 front light. Would recommend as a solution to anyone who's intimiated by modding, or doesnt want to shell out the cash
Ah, man. You've never known the pain of trying to battle the Elite Four in the back seat of your dad's station wagon on the way home from Grandma's house at night using the GBC Worm Light so you could almost sort of see the screen.
By definition a subwoofer is a loudspeaker designed to reproduce bass and subbass sounds which sit at lower frequencies, basically they’re speakers dedicated to bass.
Wow, I totally forgot that I bought one of those roll cages years ago. Ironically it broke. I still have a light/screen cover that works quite well on an original GBA.
I had the roll cage when I was a kid! I thought it was neat, but I agree with you about it completely ruining portability. The rubber on the back also stretched after some time and wouldn’t stay on the GBA anymore haha.
i imagine something like the mini-woofer would be great for people who are hard of hearing! maybe that was their aim in general, or they just wanted to amp up the gba experience, but either way i’m sure there were plenty of hard of hearing kids grateful for that little dude!
I had the light spring thing. Work pretty good but the wire worn out and broke. Was great for car rides at night. You can also twist the light also had a big blue battery pack but also was handles on the side to grip.
Have you ever seen the Gameboy Handy Pak by Interact? I had one when I was a kid and, at least to my 10 year old eyes and ears, enhance the experience. You can get a new in box one for about $30 USD.
I wish your channel was a thing back in the day when I bought that Madkatz magnifying glass for my GBA, it was useless but I liked it a lot, used to burn a lot of ants with it.
A subwoofer is a speaker that is specifically made to generate the low frequency(bass) sounds. Since this speaker plays all the frequencies well it is not a subwoofer.
For the roll cage it's really aimed for the younger demographic. Do you realize how much damage was prevented to the handheld especially the screen for families that made their kids share with their younger siblings that would most likely thrash it? So yes it has its purpose it's not boring and most likely saved plenty of screens from being scratched up. Regardless great video on more accessories that many yet to know of.
Things were rough back in the days before tempered glass screen protectors. Those plastic lenses would fog up if you even THOUGHT about putting down your gameboy face-down.
Not gonna lie, that roll cage looks kinda cool. I'm way too careful with my stuff to ever need something like it, personally, but I like the look all the same.
It wont. Otherwise most laptop displays would have been a long time ago (they use a magnet+ hall sensor system to tell when they are closed), and flash storage on a cart is a solid state, not going to do much.
I don't like the awkward rubber button on the roll cage. It looks like it would come undone if it actually fell. The actual bars look like they do their job and prevent screen cracks though. Might be good for little kids if you can trust it to stay on
GBA Roll Cage: the official accessory of your parents getting you that expensive GBA and games you wanted for Christmas, but also wanting you to have more than three or four gifts to unwrap.
