I got bored and refunded the game, at the beginning it was fun but their wasn't anything to be afraid of? Nothing actively wanted to kill you or make your life a living hell, it was only drive around an empty map play Tetris trying to fit 5 engines in your chest and do it all again and again. Nothing really compelling for me to keep playing the game in that sense I just got bored

Seeing Geneforge makes me feel so nostalgic. I used to play Avernum series when I was a kid, which are very similar games from same developer. It was the best stuff ever back then. Somehow the setting, atmosphere, story and everything just managed to capture imagination like no other. Damn I wish I would have more time so I could play these again.

I really hope Pacific Drive is remembered and gets some lauding come the reward seasons. It's not a perfect game, but its dang original, and did the type of "new weird" style vibe it set out to do extremely well. Hoping for at least a few nominations myself.
@dilbyfgc2259
@dilbyfgc2259 Месяц назад
The “new weird” style is actually an iteration of roadside picnic or STALKER type world. There are a good amount of games that take place in “the zone” believe it or not if you enjoy the setting
@croneryveit9070

I wish I could get into it. Absolutely loved the first 4 or so hours but it gets so stale it actually hurts. And it's baffling that they chose to have relatively small maps that are each reached by loading screens in a game about driving. Some highways or long mountain roads would've provided a much needed diversity to the gameplay and time to cool down and chill with the car a bit. Making it mission/instance based with loading screens as only method of travel to the missions just makes no sense to me.
@LORDOFDORKNESS42
@LORDOFDORKNESS42 28 дней назад
@@croneryveit9070 I mean, that's for the randomization. I'm sure they'd preferred a big map that warped and twisted in real time, but~ honestly what's there is already pretty dang impressive for a first time studio trying for that sort of open world that changes each run. Let alone in such high fidelity 3D AND with a heavy driving focus.
@croneryveit9070
@croneryveit9070 28 дней назад
@@LORDOFDORKNESS42 i get that, but they couldve still let the player drive to the instanced maps rather than a menu selection. Loading screens can still exist both when leaving the base and entering the randomised area.
@LORDOFDORKNESS42
@LORDOFDORKNESS42 27 дней назад
@@croneryveit9070 But that's how it works...? You leave the garage. Hit a loading screen. Enter a randomized location based on what part of the map you're on. Another screen. And another location, *usually* along your route. You can even unlock highway semi short cuts later that's basically as close as you get to fast travel. Skipping locations to reach further away biomes quicker.

Banishers was incredible. Realizing how all the endings tie together, how they all inform each other, the fact that they're possibly all actually connected, and that they likely *are all canon* is such a shocking revelation, so sad, so full of emotion. God I love that game.

Quality endings are increasingly rare in all forms of media. That’s what made me love Tsushima; the ending was perfection. I’ve lost track of the amount of games and TV shows that are incredible for the first 3/4 and then get ruined by writers who fail to stick the landing.

Knowing how the story will end is not a bad thing. The path how we get there is what matters. Misdirection and endless plot twists are often detrimental to the story, or just there to hide the weakness of the story.

What you're saying is a bit contradictory though, like you said twists and turns can cover up a bad story so knowing the ending can and often will make them worse... I'm just trying to think of good stories in video games that wouldn't be negatively affected by knowing the ending, I honestly can't think of any... maybe a remake but that's not really the same thing

Idek how to describe how nice GoT’s combat is. You always play games where other characters look at you like a legend but it doesn’t feel genuine, in the beginning of the game you’re already a badass but by the end it actually feels like you are the demon everyone thinks you are. Just little things they added like enemies running away or making him get dirty and bloody without the need for him to get the shit kicked out of him beforehand added a lot to the feeling

I also gotta recommend that you try to look into Pathologic 2, it's an incredible game with a complex story and a crazy good writing, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the game also because there isn't a lot of content about Pathologic 2 because it's kind of a hidden gem.

The Inquisitor is my absolute surprise game for 2024 so far. I only heard about it shortly before its release, I had a very good feeling and I wasn't disappointed in any way. it will also be one of the games that stay in my memory. Use every minute to continue playing and experience the story. yes, it's a story-oriented game that leaves room for interpretation, but if you know all the endings, it makes sense - something in between ;) I actually played through it 4 times in a row, even though one run only lasts 8.5 to 9 hours , that's astonishing to me, since I'd rather invest my limited time in 100 hours of crpgs :D

ghost of tsushima definitely struck so many perfect balances for an open world ARPG in the modern day; it doesn't bombard you with a million different junk icons on the map, the world is the right size to feel varied but not bloated, and it feels rich and dense, it introduces a ton of fresh mechanics to tbe genre; not to mention the attention put towards art direction; i could ride around the isle of tsushima for hours. i need to try iki island someday!

I need to play through Ghosts, as I’m intrigued by the plot and setting. I’m kind of shit at 3D action games though - games were all 2D when I was growing up, and by the time 3D games started coming out when I was in college, I was busy playing isometric RPGs so never bothered. Have played some 3D platformers, like A Hat in Time, with my kids and by the time they were like 8-9, I was the one holding them back 😆 So far this year, I’ve beaten BG3, Sovereign Syndicate, and Rogue Trader. For me Balatro, and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes have been the standouts so far. Hades II, Lonestar, No Rest for the Wicked, and Selaco too if we're counting early access titles. Honorable mentions go to Tekken 8, Last Epoch, Inkbound, and Mullet Madjack. Against the Storm as well, it missed 2024 by less than a month, but it's great so I'm bringing it up. I feel like Lonestar in particular is flying under the radar, and I truly believe it's one of the best roguelike deckbuilders out there with a truly ridiculous amount of content and replayability even though it's still in early access.

I bought Ghost of Tsushima based on your opening portion of your review where you said the story was very good. I’ve seen enough of your reviews to know that if you think the story is good, then it really must be impressive. I’ve loved the game, I was very burned out on ‘open world’ games, (the last two I played were AC Valhalla and Watchdogs Legion) and GoT’s world, stories, side quests, and characters really restored my love of what I liked about the genre. Thanks for the great review, and I might checkout a couple of the other games on this list!

That scene in Banishers with the nightmare was pretty epic. Game is surprisingly good although the map and quest tracking is a bit annoying.

E3 was a trade show but also a bit of a love letter from the industry to its supporters (gamers) Im not surprised its been 100% nixed. The industry continues its gambit, moving further away from us in favor of building their own self-contained, twitch based eco-systems.

Ghost of Tsushima is really great. One of the only open world games I had interest to finish. It uses typical mechanics from the genre but implementation of such mechanics is just so good.

Tbh I loved what I've seen of Pacific Drive and would have played it a lot if it wasn't so horribly unoptimized, at least at the time that I tried out the demo. I've had no issues running games like The Witcher 3 and CP 2077 at medium-high and medium-low settings respectively, meanwhile Pacific Drive couldn't even get up to a stable 15 FPS.

the things that eats up most of the performance is the shadows, if you turn the shadows down you would get a huge improvement. Also the game was fine when i played it after release

Another Crab's Treasure and Pacific Drive are the only ones that really interest. What a legend though, 25 games in six months.

Thanks for the video. Nothing really stands out thus far. I'm curious how Visions of Mana will be. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.

I played Spiderweb Games to death back in the day when I only had an iMac. As much as I enjoyed Avernus I loved Geneforge, in no small part due to the graphics which made it feel like a modern game in comparison. That's why I'm surprised and a little disappointed to see that the new generation of Geneforge games look much more like an updated Avernus than Geneforge.

Most MS-DOS games are a bit before my time, I'm 31, I've played a handful of them but not enough to offer a lot of strong opinions I'm afraid.

Banishers for me, too. Its fresh scenario, the atmosphere, world-building and excellent story-telling really gripped me. So much so that I put down Alan Wake 2, which I had started shortly before. Need to get back to that. GoT, too, was my GotY when it came out and one is probably my favorite open-world game to date.

I love that the description of Pacific Drive in this video would make zero sense to anyone who has not played it. It's just a hard game to describe. I do love it, though.

Its kinda crazy that dragons dogma is barely mentioned on anyones list, with good reason, that game was kind of a shit show but absolutely everyone was saying it was gonna be game of the year before release

As someone who cares little for JRPGs, Persona 3 Reload has been a pretty surprisingly enjoyable experience this year, even if it’s just a remake.
