Watch a bonus video I made about my 2022 Game of the Year here: nebula.tv/vide...
With 2022 past its close, I wanted to take some time to reflect on the games I played this year as well as what it has been like to be a new dad. In it I explore some of the things I found in Dad(tm) games like The Witcher 3 and God of War Ragnarok as well as lessons I learned in things less dad centric, like Tunic and Vampire Survivors.

A Link to the Past is the GOAT of replayable games for me. I was born in 1990 and it’s the earliest game of which I have a memory… since then I’ve gone through it every few years. I would pay any amount of money to have sequels with the exact same style.

As a new dad as well I totally feel this! I went basically all of November and half of December not playing games. I went from playing every night to once a month and it was strange. However, I feel back into gaming on the switch as it was something I could do while the baby slept next to me and it was easy to put down when she needed my attention. I never played my switch handheld but all of a sudden it clicked for me how awesome the form factor is! Plus it got me playing games I normally wouldn’t sit down and play on my Pc.

I played the Witcher 3 with almost no UI at all, no mini maps, no HP Bar, only thing that I left showing were the potions because not knowing it fucked me up a lot. As you said, I ran into other problems, but combat-wise that made the game so much more immersive. Not knowing monsters level and HP, only knowing if my HP is low when the screen turn red, those things made the world much more dangerous and thrilling, as I had to play it with the same caution we play Dark Souls for the 1st time.

It's so pleasing to see Sekiro got the recognition it deserve. Sekiro is the best FromSoft game IMO. Yes, it's way more linear and not a lot of customization like other souls game but the combat is the best of all and the story is way easier to get into. Sekiro is so revolutionary that change my view or perspective about gaming nowadays in every aspect. If you like challenge or just enter the souls series through Elden Ring, please give Sekiro a try.

I want to hear what your problems with Elden Ring are, since I'm personally struggling to think of any major flaws with it. I have some situational nitpicks such as one or two annoying or poorly thought out bosses, but I can't think of anything that negatively impacts the overall experience.
@razbuten
@razbuten Год назад
My biggest issue was that the back half of the game felt really poorly balanced (especially compared to the first half which I think almost entirely nails it). There are a few bosses that are just ridiculously tough, but 90% of stuff after Leyendell is a bit of a cakewalk if you've kept up with Seeds and weapon upgrades. A big part of why I explored in the first half was to get stronger, but the second half doesn't really account well for how strong players will get imo. It is possible that they have helped balance this some in patches though. I would agree on the poorly thought out bosses, but I found more than just a couple to be annoying. Also, a lot of the rewards you end up getting for exploring are inconsequential. I think it does a better job than a lot of games by giving you multiple kinds of rewards with every place you visit, so you'll never leave with nothing gained, but with most of the big rewards, they just sat in my inventory. With all that said, I do still think the game is a marvel and a masterpiece; its just that given its massive scope, it misses in some areas for me.
@adamhoglund9871
@adamhoglund9871 Год назад
@@razbuten it's ironically a lot like Breath of the Wild to me, where it really nails the open world almost perfectly, but kind of fails when it comes to what I expect from the series.
@mcgoldenblade4765
@mcgoldenblade4765 Год назад
@@razbuten I see where you're coming from. I personally don't think the rewards for exploring are inconsequential. Even if something I obtained wasn't immediately useful to me, I was still happy to get something new. I also respeced fairly often and tried different kinds of builds, so I did end up getting quite a bit of mileage out of a lot of stuff I found. Then again, I personally took my time with the game, as I do with every game I play. I'm the kind of person who can't physically bring myself to rush anything. As a consequence, a lot of my favorite games are incredibly long games that take me nearly a month to complete such as Persona 5 and RDR2. Also personally, Elden Ring fixed a lot of the issues I disliked about Fromsoft games, so I found it incredibly refreshing.
@mcgoldenblade4765
@mcgoldenblade4765 Год назад
Also I personally didn't have a problem with getting too strong. I actually like feeling stronger as the game goes on, it makes the effort I put in feel worth it. Also I feel like that was an unavoidable aspect of the game due to how it's fundamentally designed. I'm also INCREDIBLY glad the game didn't have enemy level scaling, I absolutely HATE that in RPGs.

I can sort of relate to this. I got a puppy in 2022. I know they are easier than children, but I can relate a little bit.

Yeah, dogs, especially puppies, are a ton of work, and there is a surprising amount of overlap between the stress of having a puppy and of having a baby. Different as you said, but still similar in more ways than people would expect.

@@razbuten whenever I would walk around with him, people would stop me to talk about him, and about how much he was similar to having a child. Again, I still know having a child is much more difficult. But it was a hard time. Especially when I got Covid two days after I brought him home. Edit: for reference, I got a husky.

@@cassynedelisky796 A husky puppy does indeed sound like lots of work, lol. When my dog (an Australian Shepherd mix) was little, I'd come up with a game where I'd throw a toy from a couch and have him jump on the couch every time he'd return it to me in order to exhaust him as much as possible. He had so much energy, it was crazy.

I have a feeling Razz would like the way the creatures interact with each other (even when we're not looking) in Rain World. Or "the time I changed screen and a group of scavs were tanking a vulture" phenomenon.

“I wasn’t able to play Elden ring for a month after my child was born. I tried everything to make it work but it wasn’t the same. I even put a health bar over her and played boss music. Then it hit me, this is how you actually beat Elden Ring. This is the final boss.”

This is one of those rare cases where the algorithm hits you with a video that you absolutely needed to see. I'll likely become a father in the next year or so and I've been freaking out about it for a while. This is the first realistic take on becoming a father that actually made me feel better. Because I'm also an avid gamer and that, among other things, is something I'm afraid will fall by the wayside as my priorities shift. Knowing that fatherhood did change everything for you but you were able to retain your sense of self is something I felt but needed to hear expressed by someone who had already been through it to really believe was possible. Thank you for this.

Don’t jinx it. You’re wife isn’t even pregnant yet, but you’re saying with such confidence that you’ll likely become a father in the next year or so. Sooo many people suffer from fertility issues these days (now more than ever before in history, for a litany of reasons), that I wouldn’t jinx it by talking as if it’s as easy as simply making a decision to become parents. Using a phrase like “I _HOPE_ to become a father in the next year or so” puts it out into the universe in a much better way, so as to not show hubris. Parenthood is a precious gift, and not a guarantee. Life has a unique (and often very messed up) way of reminding us to not take things for granted, to humble us. That said, I wish you and your wife good luck in creating a family together. But I would hope that your priorities do shift when that time comes. Playing games _SHOULD_ fall by the wayside to a decent degree. If not, your relationship with your children will suffer for it. It’s no different than having a dad that is glued to the tv watching football every waking hour he’s not working or sleeping.

For The Witcher 3 No Minimap thing- A piece of advise from someone who modded the heck out of it because of that same thing, there was a mod on nexusmods, that turned off the minimap, and added floating waypoints in the screen with the distance to it, like in almost every open world game ever. You could tune it so the waypoints only showed up when using the witcher senses. That was for me the best way I could think of playing it.

I became a dad last January with a daughter as well! Literally everything you said brought back my last year and all the different stages with it. I remember playing Stranded Deep late at night between feedings while she was sleeping beside me. I will always remember those times. Keep up the great work and congrats on getting through 2022!

I think it's so damn cool to know that your daughter will have an avenue in which to have a glimpse of your mind at a specific time she was a part of but wouldn't remember. It's a little time capsule through the lens of a hobby you hold dear and is part of your identity, not just as "dada" but as a genuine and complete person. I know I'd do just about anything to have a similar opportunity. As always, thank you for the video.

Turning off the mini map, if it's an option in games, has really improved a lot of game experiences for me. Adds a whole host of problems mostly because it's not how the level and world design was thought to be designed around, but I recommend more people to give it a try! Makes the experience a bit more, forgive the word, immersive for me. Great video as always Raz! I'm glad to see you in the Dad Gamer arc of life.

I do love how games can bridge gaps between such different life experiences person to person. If nothing else I suppose there is always a plane of existence we can all be on for a little while even if the situation outside those boundaries are different as can be.
