When my grandparents got married, Grandma was 14 years old. Grandpa asked for.Biscuits and gravy. He would tease grandma and drop the biscuit on the table and stomp his foot under the table. It made Gramdma mad. She picked up a biscuit and threw it at him. He ducked and it broke the window behind him. Hahaha He never let her live it down. Her biscuits got to be perfect .😊

Going up in central Louisiana, I thought everybody grew gardens. My Mom had 5 sisters and 4 brothers. The last boy was younger than me😉. At Pea picking time we gathered together early morning to pick crowder or purple hull peas. I remember that wet heat hitting you as you walked to your pickin row. We didn’t leave the field until we had at least 15 to 20 bushels of peas. Then we gathered on Ma maw’s front porch and to this day I don’t know where all those big ole wash pans were kept ! But by the time she was finished, Everyone had a big pan to shell peas in. Then a big old sheet would be spread out between everyone for the shells. When the sheet got full some of us kids would take it to the cow pasture to empty it. I learned very fast to keep a low quiet, which was not easy for me, profile or I would be sent to keep the babies and young ones entertained. There was always Lots of babies and I loved playing Mama but if I was with the kids I would miss all the gossip and stories of days gone by. I loved those old stories. I was a nosy kid! When we were down to the last 4 bushels a team, usually older girls with 1 adult would be sent into that hot kitchen to start washing , canning or blanching the peas to freeze. A huge pot of peas would be put on to cook along with a pan of rice and a big pone of cornbread . I love thinking about those days and now while we still grow gardens everyone is too busy with jobs or just life to make time for a full day together. I tried to make those days fun for my kids but, looking up and seeing one of your old great uncles riding up on his white plow horse telling us he had come with shiny nickels to buy “warts”, well I couldn’t copy that! By the way one sadness of my childhood was I never got a shiny nickel because I didn’t ever have a wart!! I can’t tell you how many toads I let pee on me because my uncles told me that’s how they got their warts! Oh this 71 year old is sitting here grinning like an opossum at past memories. Thank you so much.

I get such a kick out of little Maggie. So cute how she eagerly took the spoons from you so she could be the one to fill and mix the bowl for the pancakes. She takes so much pride in helping. And then when she said "and if you go back to the beginning of our channel..." She knows she's an integral part of the whole family operation. Absolutely adorable❤️

I love watching your videos. With all the turmoil in the world today, watching you is the most relaxing & calming thing I do. I'm 74 yo & reminds me of growing up with my grandmother living with us & I learned a lot from her how to be frugal, making something out of nothing & those skills saved me when as a young single mom with limited funds! Now as an "elderly" person living on very limited retirement funds, I still practice a lot of those old frugal ways. I've always lived with the attitude of distinguishing between a "want" and a "need" but I wouldn't have it any other way!

Oh I just love watching and listening to to your story’s. Both my parents came from the south one from Kentucky, one from Missouri. Then they moved to Michigan. They raised raised me here in Michigan and my friends around here couldn’t believe how we were together and did everything together no I’m 66 and I’m trying to do my grandchildren the same way we watch them all the time when they’re not in school.. listening to the both of you brings back such wonderful times in my life. My dad‘s mom and dad moved up here to Michigan and 33 of us. Grandchildren went to help out over at their house when the garden came in and all the kids and their spouses, we worked out in the backyard and holding up the groceries peeling chopping stringing, and breaking beans for 2 to 3 weekends in a row while doing our own gardens and grandma would always cook chickens slaughtered by my grandfather for all of us to eat after we finish the work of Kenny and preserving. I’ve been blessed to have been raised like this and I know you guys are blessed in what you are doing. I wish more people in the world could have that kind of a blessing. I think we all get along a lot better.😊❤

I bought my husband a 1997 ford truck after our daughter was born and we sold it to a family member so we could go to Destin Florida on vacation one year and I’ve been so upset about letting it go almost every day ! It was a nice truck !! And he told someone he’d sell it and I was so against it and I tell him all the time I wish I’d never let you do that !! He said well I gave them my word so I can’t change that !! I’m still trying to find another one for him , just never have enough money to buy one . We don’t have a washer and dryer and well he’s disabled and I mean really disabled and we just live our best lives and hope one day I can make enough to get what we need . We are in our 50s so life isn’t always as simple as it was when we were younger . We just love each other and make the best of it . I completely would never get rid of those old trucks , memories are made with them

If I was there, I'd have a dish pan full of peas being in hog heaven! I shelled 8 bushels of pink-eyed purple hull peas and 3 of zipper peas! I kept 5 bushels for myself, 3 for someone else. Here in the Fl panhandle, pea season is over but if I had some, I'd be shelling. As long as I have sweet tea and potty breaks, I'm happy shelling!!!

I love watching you and Maggie cook in the kitchen. I really need to order your cookbook. I keep thinking about it, but I need to do that. I totally agree with you about a small house. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a newer home, but it would have to have room for all my shelves with my canned food on it. Plus, we can afford this one much easier than we would be able to with a newer and bigger home. I love watching you all work together and talk about the old days and such. That will be some wonderful memories! I don't like to go out and eat much anymore. Even though I know I have to clean up afterwards, I'd still rather cook my own food. I love experimenting with my home canned food. Last night I took my onions and peppers and cooked them in some butter, added tomato sauce and opened up a couple of jars of my home canned beef. It was a skillet pepper steak, and it was so good! I love how I won't have to put the round steak in the crockpot and have it cook all day anymore.

Wanted to let others know that Belk has a coupon right now for the belly pot, I just got one for 50% off, woohoo! Speaking of freeze dryers I would encourage everyone to do some research. I got a Harvest Right and it would not freeze the very first time I tried to use it. had to ship it back for repair. When I got it back, it was damaged with scratches and the paint was gouged in several places, door had scratches all over the inside, drain hose had holes in it, and the shelving unit looked used. But Harvest Right does not want to make it right, they offered me a $100 store credit, lol. I am so mad and aggravated, it was an investment, and I wish I had never got it. Love your values, morals, and character! Thanks for sharing!

I’m originally from Louisiana where purple hull peas are a big thing. Thirty years ago we moved to Branson Missouri and I planted purple hull peas in my garden and they grew great. We love purple hull peas. Also on the okra I don’t know if you ever tried jambalaya okra but it is wonderful. It’s a short plant making it easy to pick and you have to pick it daily. You can get it from Hoss seed and you may have some but if not I highly recommend it. Your channel is one of the best and love watching it. There is nothing better than the good old south.

Purplehul peas here in Louisiana are a big thing. Many folks who don't "garden", seek out large growers who sell them. I find they are considerably better than their cousin, black eye pea. But we pretty much cook them both the same way. And are particularly better when cooked fresh! Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Taylor little pea sheller is great. They are a little high, but they we'll shell beans, peas fresh or dry. I got one used, and I love it. Me and my wife can shell a bushel of peas in about 20 to 30 minutes. If you can find one grab it. I promise you won't regret it. Enjoy your videos showing the world how some of us love to live. God bless take care.

I remember the first time I made gravy - I called my Granny in tears because it wasn't thickening up. She laughed and told me to keep stirring! That was 45 years ago - I still miss her ❤

I have never heard of the october beans until I seen yalls video. I like purple hull peas, they grow good where I am if you can keep the ants out of them. Our favorite southern peas is the cream pea, it smaller that the purple hulls.

What a great video. I love hearing the stories and I'm sure your children do too. I remember 40 years ago serving my husband stuffed peppers with under cooked rice. We laugh now remembering him crunching his way through those stuffed peppers lol. I have improved greatly.. haha

Great conversation. I remember when I was first married I always had to call my mother-in-law when I was making a milk gravy or sausage gravy and say, "Now wait, how do I do this again? Do I take the skillet off the heat when I add the milk?" or "The flour is supposed to cook first before I add the milk?" haha! Every time. I'd always forget. And yes, tasting food as you're making it is SO important. I've developed my own "Kelly's famous spaghetti sauce" doing that (katie is a nickname), and that's from trying many other recipes. Those gliders will last a lifetime. Afer being an art director most of my life, I went to part-time work at a garden center (best job I ever had, loved it) and we sold that Amish-made outdoor furniture. Yes, pretty expensive, but the way they're made, they are guaranteed for life, even if left outside in the sun with no cover. Even the screws used are rustproof. Question: With all those trucks and cars you have, could you sell at least one of them and use that money to buy an irrigation drip system for your garden beds in front of your house? I SO don't mean to criticize because I love all that you do, but I can't help but think that a drip irrigation system, just for those garden beds, not the other ones, would help you all so much with better water management (expecially when there are those times of drought) and disease management. My thought, take for whatever it's worth. Thanks for this video. And may God continue to bless your whole family! ❤

In central Mississippi the pink eye purple hull pea is the go to.We raised them to eat and raised acres of them as our truck patch in the summer. We made thousands of dollars on them every summer.

I live in North Mississippi and we can't keep purple hull peas. If you can't grow them you have to put your name on a long list for local growers and hope they don't run out. I have to say that pintos and great northern beans run neck and neck for bean favorites. I love watching your channel and definitely have learned from y'all.

I was reared with eating purple hull peas about 50% of the time. Living in Northeast Mississippi, we had several meatless meals + mashed potatoes and cornbread.
