I will be in Greenock on a cruise stop in June - I'm excited! My gg-grandma emigrated from there. Her dad became a "sugar boiler" in the US. Is there a local museum about the sugar industry there?
@@susieclayton6875 not specifically about the sugar industry but there IS a museum in Greenock (McLean Museum and Art Gallery). They might have some things re the sugar industry in there. Hope you enjoy your visit and that the weather is good for you
I was in Greenock the last two weeks of December 1961, the Christmas season, which probably isn’t the best of season for weather. The only real problem was the cloudiness and the rain. The people I met were cordial and I enjoyed walking around the city as much as I could. Several us frequented the Palladium Dance Hall which I believe was on Brougham Street. I met a very nice young lady at the Palladium who lived on Gibbshill and who took me to a soccer game. (Football) at a stadium somewhere in Greenock. As I said, I have fond memories of Greenock. @@ThePortLowdown
I'm a tour guide and pick up people from Greenock for mostly Stirling Castle & Loch Lomond tours but it was really nice to see some of the interesting places to see in Greenock.
Thank you! It was a nice first landing in Scotland, and we hope to come back someday. The biggest issue when crusing is the time limit. As a guide, do we have any recommendations for Glasgow? It's the one city we missed on that trip.
Are there tours that will take me to Dumbarton Castle? I adore Scotland and have already visited Glasgow. I’m going to be in port at the end of September 2024.
@@ThePortLowdown No we moved to South Africa in ‘81 just after I was born. Rhodesia changed to Zimbabwe. My folks have returned to Scotland, living in Larkhall now. I’m in sunny Italy with my Italian wife.
This was beautiful to watch & very informative. Scotland is beautiful,I had no knowledge of Greenock. New subscriber here 🇿🇼❤️🇬🇧. I am glad I can see more of the world through you.
Was there for a day (8am to 5 PM) about three weeks ago with Windstar. We took a tour of GlenGoyne Distillery with a stop at Loch Lomond. It was great, but left us no time to go see Glasgow, so we walked around Greenock as well. We didn't venture as far as you, but the bus driver to GlenGoyne talked a lot about the area, shipyards, history and such, and it left us wishing we had an extra day or two, or that we just went off to Dumbarton Castle (Elephant Rock area) and Glasgow, to then met the ship in Oban the next day. Guess we'll have to go back.
I often wish to leave the ship for more of a slow travel experience. It's such a huge luxury to buy yourself extra time. We got lucky on our last cruise and had an overnight in Edinburgh. We stayed at a hotel overnight and loved it!
@@ThePortLowdown The last stop of our cruise was in Edinburgh. We chose a hotel there instead of an excursion so we ended up in the Virgin Hotel on Victoria Street (Harry Potter's Diagon Alley) right in the heart of everything. The hotel and Edinburgh were awesome but you'd need at least a week to see Edinburgh properly. The place is like a fairytale come to life. Last time I had that vibe was in Monaco.
Agreed. It's a vibrant and exciting place, always. We stayed at Premier Inn close to the National Gallery. Wanna go back, there's so much to see. One day is way to short!
I'm Greenokian, nice vid. Thank you for being so nice. Shout out to Gourock (The town you see from Lyle hill) and Port Glasgow (shipyards) where I grew up.
Very nice and well edited video. It shows Greenock in a very good light. Best tip for Greenock shore day- Bring an umbrella. Chances are you will see rain at some point in the day.
Thank you for lovely British Isles vlogs, as someone from Glasgow who has done 30 or so cruises mostly from Southampton, Mediterranean ports and Miami, its dissapointing we only been to Greenock to embark once and visit once more. Your Invergordon/Inverness/Edinburgh vlogs are next to watch. Lang may yir lum reek ! You might need to Google that ! 😂
Thank you! And such a kind toast. I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos! Actually I'm in Scotland right now, stopping at Edinburgh tomorrow. Can't wait!
@ThePortLowdown You are more than than welcome, glad you are both back. Now Edinburgh is lovely, but an hour along the M8 is the biggest city, Glasgow/Glesga !! Edinburgh is only the capital ! Hope the weather is being kind to you, Driech, is another word to Google ! 🤣 🏴
Well, it's foggy in South Queensferry today with rain predicted. Driech. But should be sunny next day. Our ship is stopping here for an overnight and I'm taking the opportunity to make another Edinburgh video about taking the train. Best to you!
Yes, you're right. The tour bus starts in Greenock and drives down to Port Glasgow and the Castle, which didn't take long to get to. Point is, that was all wrapped up in the same tour of the area.
Just like a load of other countries are planning with some actually planning to limit cruises docking aswell. Obviously that doesn't fit your narrative though eh...
