I once saw a guy roll up to the group ride and pull a plastic shopping bag out from the front of his jersey. He had been using it as a windbreaker until the sun came out. Now THAT is proper cycling gear.

Did the same with a dry-cleaning bag. If you put the opening down, the wind inflates the bag slightly for added insulation. Perspiration makes newspaper soggy and heavy.

I have found most cycling jacket collars constrict my neck so I unzip the top. But, I always use a neck gaiter to recover the unzipped section. I like the idea of no collar for just this reason. Great product review too. All my cycling gear goes on-road to off-road. If you like it, wear it.

The Best Reviews on the Internet - not even close. Well designed jacket, not surprising since it's Castelli, but you are so right - Epic FAIL on the collar. What do you think the designer was thinking? Geez. Like how you hit the key designs of the jacket, then actually USE IT! Next - how about gloves? Feet and hands get the coldest by far. Thanks again, DK, and Happy Thanksgiving!

I guess I am old school and prefer the collar, for both function and form. Regarding your cross pollination question - flat to curly and back - I often wear road style jerseys on my MTB because I like having the back pockets and their easy access. I also wear my road cold weather gear for all types of riding because it works and I have a good amount of it.

Road jerseys just make so much sense in every context. Back pockets plus at least a quarter zip for extra ventilation.

I tend to use a thin fleece with a Paramo lightweight jacket over it. The Paramo has huge, and I I mean HUGE, pit zips and stops about 90% of the rain and all of the wind getting in. In really cold conditions I just swap out jackets for a heavier Paramo smock with no extra insulation and this stops 100% of the weather plus the hood fits over your helmet as it was designed as a shell for winter climbing when wearing a helmet. I'm not a racer but commute every day to my work, as a cycle instructor, in all sorts of weather so I need reliability rather than light weight. I know you are a competitive cyclist but I'm loving the knowledge in your videos as well as the style.

I'm loving the idea of no collar, jersey and jacket collars are normally too high and restrictive. Keep this wonderful content coming please....

Interesting Jersacket. No collar seems like a nod to the uber-aero collarless - approaching scoop neck - jerseys/skinsuits in the pro peloton. and yes, I consider myself a dirt roadie as far as gear. Use it on all my water resistant shells. Always been a bit amused by the 'baggy' aesthetic that many folks on MTBs seem to insist on. Notice all the MTB racers wear road gear, except on downhill, where they wear special crash gear. My choice of clothing comes down to 'what is clean' and 'am I going directly for a beer afterward'. If 'beer' then baggies.

Collars on everything are invariably too tight for me for my entire life and I'll always have it unbuttoned or partially unzipped. As long as it doesn't rub abrasively anywhere, it's actually kind of perfect without. I am already compensating for it being open collar anyhow so I don't need to adjust gear unless it's to go more snug now that I don't have the collar and collateral bits to have to work around (zip offs leave hard stuff behind too that hurts when rolling post-stackage). My helmet is actually integrated with a quarter/half gaiter (super light CF helmet from Bonehead Composites, not an affiliate, but love the helmets/company); I am unsure if anything like it is available from MTB suppliers (I'm disabled and ride a tadpole, which is surprisingly easy to flip when at the skate/BMX park so bike hats don't really work).

Not a racer and not really a roady but with that said Castelli fall/winter jerseys are the best I've found. The material is, generally speaking, warm, light, and fast drying. And of very high importance (to me), their collars are high. Will no longer buy a cool/cold weather jersey/jacket without a high collar. Best is their gear is not that expensive - you can get it on sale, especially from UK on-line stores. Don't have a racer's build,; their cool/cold gear fits well on the average person, just size up one level.

I have thick long hair and I hate collars. Collars grab/pull the hair on the back of my neck under my braid. I like to layer a hanky under my buff so I get a place to blow my nose close by. I hope other brands take notice.

Very happy it doesn't have a high collar. Hate that feeling of a high collar, feels like I'm being choked. Would rather add a buff as you did and remove it when I'm warmer, instead of being stuck with a collar I have tonzip down.

I love this! I was hoping for someone to say that this was actually a match for them. Appreciate your comment. Looks like this piece is a perfect match for you.

I’d love to see you talk about some lower tech stuff from smaller brands, kinda along the lines of the dickies with a chamois from squid!
